With very few exceptions, I've been very impressed with his offense at OSU. Yes, he has great talent to work with and that accounts for a good portion of their seasonal stats but, even against good teams, OSU offense is really good (again, with a few exceptions).

Where does his scheme come from? Balanced. Very versatile, with strong rushing and passing concepts.
Consistently schemes his receivers open. Not just 'my receivers are going to play well in the NFL and you can't guard them', but OSU seems to have someone open every single play, whether TE, WR or RB. Not as impressed with the scheme on defense but the offense is really potent and looks difficult to scheme against. I don't know where he developed his offense but I'd like to think we could use some of his concepts to get guys open like they do, even accounting for the talent difference.

BTW, I have OSU but they have a helluva team this year.

Ohio State fans are insane for wanting to get rid of him. I’d take those results all day; every day. They have only had two titles in like 50 years but somehow this isn’t good enough?
All goes back to that Michigan loss. Their fans tried to attack him for saying this, but Saban is absolutely right about the Ohio State fans having a psychotic obsession with Michigan. Rivalries are big for sure but in no way should one bad game in a rivalry determine a season like the way they do. Buckeyes are well on their way to winning with the way they’ve playing now but there will still be those who want him gone.

Kelly's.... I'm sure Ryan Day had a lot of input but he hired Kelly to run the offense. HC responsibilities got too much to try and do both.
You can’t say it’s simply one’s or the other’s offense. Those two have worked together off and on for years, and they share a lot of similar philosophies.

Ryan Day was Chip Kelly’s QB when Kelly was OC at New Hampshire. Day was then Kelly’s TE coach at New Hampshire and Kelly’s QB coach when Kelly was HC of the Eagles and 49er’s.

They have known and been discussing offensive philosophies with each other for 25 years.

Good info - didn't know any of that. Didn't seem like Kelly's offense translated to the NFL that well, iirc. But, it's a thing of beauty at the college level when it's clicking.

He also wasn't his first choice to run the offense. Maybe because they have too similar of philosophies and Day wanted to add new dimensions?

Day gets a lot of the credit. OSU’s offense has been different, in a good way, since Day joined OSU as the OC under Meyer. He brought more of a spread offense that wasn’t as QB run happy as Meyer typically ran.

OSU’s offense has had lots of big performances under his watch. Just look back at their offense when they played Georgia in the playoffs a couple years ago and shredded the Georgia D.

Day just hasn’t handled the Michigan rivalry well and seems to tighten up the game plan bs playing loose. That’s where the frustration from the fans has come from. Imagine UK basketball having a big talent advantage over UL but losing four years in a row. Im sure that wouldn’t set well with most fans.

Kelly joining this year has certainly helped Day step away from running the offense and focus more on being the head coach. As already noted, his history and trust in Kelly has been a big factor. He had previously named Heartline the OC. However, Heartline has never been an OC before and Day never really “let go” of the offense reigns until this year.

He wasn’t the first choice because Kelly was still head coach of UCLA and had not decided to step away yet.

On paper, Bill O’Brien looked like a great OC hire and someone that had plenty of experience for the job. However, him leaving and going to BC helped to align the timing with Chip Kelly and allowed Day to bring in an elite offensive mind. More importantly, someone that he had a ton of history with and full trust in.
