Rumor from UT

I claimed that would happen but the entitled generation assured everyone these guys were pros. There would be no problems.
There were also discussions about unpaid upperclassmen who might be jealous of the wealthy newcomers.

Texas A&M might be the first example of a team where, consciously or sub-consciously, unpaid or poorly paid upper class men did not give it “their all,” while watching Frosh drive nicer rides.

I totally agree...this is hard for kids to see which players/spots are most valuable. I know Hooker is very important to Tennessee...but Banks is about the only credible defensive player to Tennessee IMO. And he is more important than RB and maybe al the WR for that team. But I bet when NIL comes around, he'd get less than all those guys.

I just don't see how with NIL and even dumber transfer portal this will ever not go into a direction that top teams just stockpile more and more talent that continues the divide...then when they need a free agent to fill a spot...they just coincidentally get kids to jump from lesser teams to fill their spots. I just find that whole scenario ridiculous for the have nots (as if the past system was really a good situation for have nots).

You could very well be right, but he has a long history of bad decisions going back to HS. I don't know if there was an incident in the locker room or not, but going by past history it's not out of the question.

Doubt if we ever find out, Knoxville media will have this story successfully buried by Wed.

Honestly I do not believe it, TN dbs were talking a lot of trash in that game and were just getting beat.
Funny if true though, pretty quiet here in the vol state. People will jump off a ledge if they lose to Vandy.

People that didn’t think this would become a problem in College locker rooms had their head stuck in the sand. It has caused some problems at other places other than Tennessee. And it will continue to cause problems. This is not the NFL. These are college age kids. Plus they all don’t have contacts that pay them money. They only have the NIL (pay for play) money to fall back on.

I can see players that work just as hard every day in practice, in games, and in the offseason busting their asses and not getting money while a chosen few raked in the dough. Not saying it’s right to be jealous, but I can understand why they’re pissed.
Have to wonder how much of this has played into Texas A&M's demise this season.

Is there a possible future where all money goes into a pool and distributed equally? At least equal amongst starters with backups and future players getting a smaller portion?

Kind of funny if this turns on programs dropping hard cash for players like QBs and WR and the guys doing the dirty work watching them drive around in nice cars with new cell phones while they get a few gifts from them making signficantly less than the stars.
I would be upset.

Never thought this NIL feeding frenzy would work out in the long run. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Just look at Major League Baseball. In the end college athletics has changed forever and the change will prove to be very damaging.

That’s also a clever way to say. We got our tails whipped. Right?
Well if you want to increase your NIL money, laying down on defense should really help your cause😜🤔🥴🥱
A cabbage has more sense if that’s the case. I was there, they were hitting hard…they were simply hit by a blitzkrieg that night but whatever makes them feel better.

It’s actually “the love of money is the root of all evil. Nothing wrong with money until you love it so much it controls you.
I would say Banks and the entire Defense laying down over their jealousy of someone else lining their pockets would classify as a love of money. Getting your bag is all the kids care about today…it’s glorified and pushed in every level of society today.

I’m a bit old school…a 250,000 education, free lodging, free food, free healthcare, free tutoring, free travel on chartered planes, free coaching to develop you for the next level, Being treated like a rock star on campus still sounds like a pretty good living for a 18-23 year old. 🤷🏼‍♂️

After paying to put my two kids through college I agree. Guess I should’ve had them takeout student loans. The whole world is upside down.

Before I make a point about this-

1) I'm not against players getting paid at this level.

2) I think they should at the very least be insured against future losses due to injury at a standard rate of pay being = at least to the NFL league minimum.

3) I think players should be paid for use of their image and likeness for anything promotional or special interest. News excluded as it has always been.

However, the use of NIL to sign players to specific teams is not NIL. It is pay for play. If you condition their pay upon which school they play for or based on it being a school contracted with certain providers, it is not NIL. It's NIL if they negotiate (for use of their NIL) and are paid after they sign with a program.

The fact that the ncaa has not defended their own rulings on NIL makes them less an association of members and more of a monopoly. As an organization, they are not only not representing everyone in their organization, but no one in their organization is allowed to comment upon or question their decisions, nor are they able to compete apart from the organization against anyone within the organization.

It's a monopoly and has been that does not respect or represent each of its members equally.

At the current cost of education, athletes are making well over 25k per year in tuition and fees, room and board, travel and equipment costs, promotional, medical, and training services. I'm guessing it's gotta be close to 50k per year, but I'm just spitballing. That's anywhere from 150-250k in earnings from 3-5 years of playing time. It's much higher if athletes are earning their masters degrees before leaving (and I didn't factor summer classes in this at all).

That's being paid by any other measure. If we went to work for a company and were paid over 50k in employer funded perks expenditures, we would likely be taxed on much or all of it as income. The only thing that prevented that on this level was the "amateur" status of the players. NIL fractures that, as the value of a player's NIL to a sponsor in nearly every case is based on their reputation and performance in the sport in which they participate.

There is no true separation between their status/rep as an athlete and their NIL for most athletes. IOW with NIL based on the sport in which they participate they are professional athletes once they are paid for the NIL rights. ALL of their earnings, including everything covered by their scholarships and other paid expenses are subject to possible taxation.

This won't be decided by the ncaa but by the irs and the courts eventually. The ncaa isn't saying more about it right now because their tenders are in a vice right now. They're just waiting for the other shoe to drop and hoping they have more time before it happens, imo.

There is NO question, however, that a player signing an NIL deal to go to a certain school and getting paid before enrollment and taking classes is INELIGIBLE by ncaa guidelines, and the universities that suit them up on game day are subject to forfeiture of such games and other penalties. It'll be interesting to watch what happens

I'm not necessarily opposed to kids having the ability to earn money while playing college sports. That being said, the NCAA is a voluntary league. No one has to play NCAA sports if they don't feel they are getting a sufficient return from doing so. A voluntary league should be able to set whatever rules they see fit. If athletes don't think complying with those rules are worth what they get in return, then they are free to play elsewhere or not play at all. If athletes were forced to play NCAA sports, then I would agree with the court. Government should not be telling private voluntary leagues what their rules must be.
Here is the problem with that. You think Tennessee will send Hooker packing because he went out and got a legal NIL deal?? The Schools are a part of this as well. They could tell payers to pack up and leave but they won’t. All schools would have to follow the same rules as it relates to NIL. Schools Cheat. That makes other schools cheat to stay competitive. Texas A&M opened this cheating. Now others have followed suit.

That's a terrible argument. That logic would lead to the end of Law.

Government should not be telling private business what their rules must be.
Government should not be telling private citizens what their rules must be.

You're creating The Purge, but 24/7.

The only thing the SCOTUS ruling did was tell schools they must let student athletes do what every other scholarship student (and American) can do inherently, make money off their own image.

That's a huge dramatization of what I said. We are not talking about criminal offenses. We are talking about rules to qualify to participate in a league.

I don't think the concern about cheating was the driving force behind the SCOTUS decision on NIL.

QB and Running Back making 2 million+ . O-Line ???
And if player don’t react then I don’t blame them. Nfl Qb makes most money but tackles are worth more than a RB. So in this warped nil world. If a RB is getting paid and I’m an Oline not getting any…I’m leaving for a school that pays more to OL

Cameraman mad film director and lead actor made more, but film wouldn't be possible if he didn't record scenes.
