Rick Barnes benched Chaz Lanier for not doing what he is “paid to do”

NIL should be per game no play no pay

I think it will get there. As programs/coaches get burned by guys not fulfilling their contracts, they will begin enact performance based criteria. This is an example and I have to applaud Barnes for setting the trend (or trying to). If you don't play to your contract, in whatever way that is, then you won't play. Chaz now kind of looks like an ass in this situation, and hes not going to get the total stat numbers that might help him get his next NIL "pay day".

Barnes did it today, some more coaches will do it tomorrow. Until hopefully the day comes where programs start going with a an actual contract based system. And as long as other coaches follow suite, than the players won't have the leverage..

Cal didn't care what that kid was getting paid. He kept him on the bench the whole time. 🤣
IIRC, Sharp got a huge NIL deal with that Louisville Porsche dealer. Has that dealer been actively donating to our NIL since then?

To me, that's kind of a big deal. If the dealer gave that kid big money and Cal allowed him to sit and not play, I would not blame them for never kicking in again (until now, of course, since Cal is gone).

That kind of crap can cost us NIL and future recruits.

NIL is a two edged sword. When players get paid to play they lose the protection of being amateurs. Coaches are afraid to call them out because they will leave, that will slowly change. The media and the average fan are still caught up in these are just kids and insulated from criticism mindset. I think both perceptions will change over time. Why not be able to trade players during the season, we are only a short distance from that right now. Nil has taken the lid off a huge can of worms, there are no rules. Money ,accountability and criticism are(or should be) on the table. The only thing off the table is amateurism and anything attached or related to that status.

This is as good as UT has been in a while. Odds are against them getting someone better.
Absolutely agree. They had been to only one elite eight in school history before last year. Chances are the next coach won’t be nearly what Barnes is and has been for them.

If we come to the point of actually trading players, then the whole "education" aspect needs to be removed from the equation. Take them out of classes (unless they want to pay for their own education), and replace the school cheerleaders with their professional counterparts. Just make it "professional sports coming to your campus".

I'm just waiting for SEC schools to look at this year's garbage football results and siphon money away from basketball to prop up the sport that makes more money. That first round Tennessee performance is probably eating at them. 😂

We are about this >>>>>>>>>>>>>> far from being there now

Yep, hoping the same. If the SEC starts going all in on football, we can seize the opportunity. Thankfully at least most of us in this fanbase are reasonable enough to know we aren’t Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma etc in football. The NIL football numbers are only gonna get more insane.

Eventually, every university is going to have to have these kids sign contracts for the bigger NIL deals.

I'm not sure how the labor laws come into affect here, so I'm not sure if this is legal to do, but if I'm paying you a million bucks to play here, you have to sign this 2 year contract.

I'm not sure why it would be illegal, once you get paid, you aren't an amateur, just like a MLB player.

But contracts will help put the control back into the coaches hands, where they can actually coach them without fear of a kid leaving at years end.

But in Chaz Lanier's case, he's gone after this year anyway, so it doesn't matter. If he quits, well, he just really hurt his value to the NBA.

Just thinking out loud (not really) here.
