Realistically they will never be big spenders. However, having an offseason like they did going into 2020 signing Miley, Moustakas & Castellanos is something I can see the organization doing. Don't waste it on Moustakas and they need someone they can count on to eat innings like Martinez. Miley was good, but very injury prone. Nathan Eovaldi would be a good addition to mentor this young pitching staff and fill out the rotation. He has real postseason experience which would be huge for the Reds having a proven winner in October. Sign an outfielder and a setup man to pitch in high-leverage situations.

On the last page, I made the case for why the Reds should extend a qualifying offer to Martinez if he opts out. There is almost no chance he is going to accept it. As a Boras client and at this stage of his career, he will want a 2-3 year deal and one big contract before he retires. If that is the case, so be it. Let him decline the offer. The Reds will get a compensation pick in next year's draft unlike they would if Cincinnati does not offer him. The Reds can use that money to give another player a contract extension, go after another pitcher to fill his spot, sign a dependable relief pitcher or upgrade the outfield.

Nelson hitting barely over .200 in 6 minor league seasons with modest power, Tanner under .200 with limited power in 3 MiLB seasons. Both have been flops.
I would be thrilled if they added Travis D'Arnaud if you are looking for offense. Wouldn't be surprised to see them settle for Austin Hedges as a better backstop since he played under Francona during his final years in Cleveland.

You're right, I missed that yesterday. Have to consider ourselves lucky he didn't come play for Francona with his .152 avg. They have to do better. Higashioka, Stassi or Grandal would be better than Hedges.
