I think that's fair, all you can really expect for him as volatile as he has been even in Louisville to put him in a long relief role when a starter flames out or if Cincinnati finds themselves way ahead. The back and forth between Louisville & Cincinnati isn't going to be the answer either.Reds offense put up 13 hits today, even Senzel got in on the action with a homer of his own after EDLC. Bullpen sharp outside of Stoudt who needs to find his niche in middle relief with huge leads or in blowouts. Even a 4 run lead Bell has to lift him for Sims.
To be fair to Levi Stoudt, need to see him put together more than a game or 2 before shipping him back to Louisville to get a fair assessment of Stoudt. I think the ship has sailed on Stoudt as a starter in Cincinnati when he was only getting spot starts to begin with. Does not have very good control of his pitches and all over the place.I think that's fair, all you can really expect for him as volatile as he has been even in Louisville to put him in a long relief role when a starter flames out or if Cincinnati finds themselves way ahead. I thought he should be batting 3rd, not 4th when he came up. Right now, Friedl or McClain would be better leadoff hitters. CES would Ideally be #4 at some point.I’ve questioned many of David Bells decisions with regards to lineups and when he pulls pitchers. There is no world in which he should have EDLC hitting lead off. The fact that he continues to stick with that is infuriating.
I hope Votto doesn't feel like he has more years left in him and goes somewhere else to play. I hope he retires a Red, and like you said, joins the staff in some capacity tutoring hitters. I wonder what kind of Manager he would make down the road.Love seeing Benson going opposite field and that conversation with Joey Votto on the plane ride back from Boston has done wonders for the direction of his career. Hope Votto will stick around as an instructor/advisor to the Reds working with the hitters well after his playing days are done. Even the rookies crediting him with helping them while he was down in Louisville. 3 wins in a row. Brewers lost to Atlanta.
Re Votto/manager...there's a pretty solid theory that great players don't necessarily make great managers. Rose was ordinary, Ted Williams was terrible. Theory was the game came so easily to them that they seldom had the patience needed to develop players. Guys like Sparky, LaSorda, Stengal etc were mostly subs and were willing to let guys progress at their own rate. Anyway, hope Votto stays involved.I hope Votto doesn't feel like he has more years left in him and goes somewhere else to play. Always thought that was likely to happen but thought it would be during the off season. With team progress ahead of schedule that puts other stuff ahead of schedule too. Infield of CES, McLain, EDLC, Marte 1B to 3B and Steer in LF makes me all tingly.Story out this morning that Jonathan India is on the trade block for a pitcher. If you have to trade someone, India is the one with all the infielders we have in the minors.
Reds played with fire all night before finally falling. Brewers were 1 for 15 with RISP before bottom of 9th. Need to crank up the offense, I'm sorry but having Votto stuck in the middle of the lineup is no longer working. Guy's hitting like .170.Reds will be lucky to win this game. Seven walks by the pitchers. Lots of mistakes. Almost everything so far but still have only given up 2 runs but how long can that last?
They need to switch Benson and Votto in the batting order.Reds played with fire all night before finally falling. Brewers were 1 for 15 with RISP before bottom of 9th. Hate to lose him mid season, because he's been a real part of why they are where they are, but his playing time has definitely been cut and he's moved down the lineup. Was hoping that would have been an off-season move. True team player and great clubhouse guy, but moving him will help them get a more consistent lineup set.Story out this morning that Jonathan India is on the trade block for a pitcher. Need to designate a second closer for the stretch run too. give Diaz two of every three opportunities. He needs the rest and no more of this using him 3-4 days in a row.Absolutely have to go get a real setup man. Can't stand watching them piss away these games and losing by 1. So many of them are not only worn out and others just don't trust them at all in high-leverage situations.
"THAT BALL HAD A FAMILY!!!"EDLC just murdered a ball. Robbed of an HR to lead off the game but left no doubt on that one. 456 ft with a velocity of 113.
Starting to hate the Brewers almost as much as I hate the Cardinals.Reds played with fire all night before finally falling. Brewers were 1 for 15 with RISP before bottom of 9th. Diaz has never pitched a this much. He’s been shaky for a month!Need to designate a second closer for the stretch run too. give Diaz two of every three opportunities. He needs the rest and no more of this using him 3-4 days in a row.
Get the feeling the Reds want Sims in that role but can't seem to make the commitment. Farmer has past closing experience, Busenitz has 7 saves in AAA.Need to designate a second closer for the stretch run too. give Diaz two of every three opportunities. I trust Sims to get the job done especially for jams like he got out of in Arizona and the closing experience during 2021 before the injury. If that is how they feel about their 2nd most reliable reliever who has been here since 2018 then Cincinnati certainly could use another to stabilize the bullpen. Especially one with experience in October if Cincinnati makes it that far. Another reliable arm would do wonders for this bullpen. Haven't seen a team that couldn't use help yet during the stretch run. They are middle of the row, 15th in team bullpen ERA in the entire MLB and pitched the 6th most innings in all of MLB so far.Get the feeling the Reds want Sims in that role but can't seem to make the commitment.
