Reds

Williamson 6 innings, 1 run & 3 hits. Went 5 scoreless with 1 hit until they got to him in the 6th. Now for the bullpen to do their job.

Reds offense is back! That said, not sure about putting Stoudt in this high leverage situation with a 10 ERA when Sims was also warming up. But I get wanting to rest Diaz before the Brewers series. Looking like Bell made a bad decision so far.

7-3 sweep. 5 straight wins.

Reds offense put up 13 hits today, even Senzel got in on the action with a homer of his own after EDLC. Bullpen sharp outside of Stoudt who needs to find his niche in middle relief with huge leads or in blowouts. Even a 4 run lead Bell has to lift him for Sims.

Old friend Raisel Iglesias strikes out the side as the Brewers lose the series to the Braves. Reds are a half game out headed to Milwaukee.

I think that's fair, all you can really expect for him as volatile as he has been even in Louisville to put him in a long relief role when a starter flames out or if Cincinnati finds themselves way ahead. The back and forth between Louisville & Cincinnati isn't going to be the answer either.

To be fair to Levi Stoudt, need to see him put together more than a game or 2 before shipping him back to Louisville to get a fair assessment of Stoudt. I think the ship has sailed on Stoudt as a starter in Cincinnati when he was only getting spot starts to begin with. Does not have very good control of his pitches and all over the place.

Blake Dunn is absolutely crushing AA much more than he was with Dayton. Would call him up soon to Louisville. Even with the Reds having Benson, Friedl, Fraley & Steer he could even be trade bait. Teams want prospects with potential instead of players like Senzel who are at their ceiling.

I’ve questioned many of David Bells decisions with regards to lineups and when he pulls pitchers. There is no world in which he should have EDLC hitting lead off. The fact that he continues to stick with that is infuriating.
I thought he should be batting 3rd, not 4th when he came up. Right now, Friedl or McClain would be better leadoff hitters. CES would Ideally be #4 at some point.

Love seeing Benson going opposite field and that conversation with Joey Votto on the plane ride back from Boston has done wonders for the direction of his career. Hope Votto will stick around as an instructor/advisor to the Reds working with the hitters well after his playing days are done. Even the rookies crediting him with helping them while he was down in Louisville. 3 wins in a row. Brewers lost to Atlanta.
I hope Votto doesn't feel like he has more years left in him and goes somewhere else to play. I hope he retires a Red, and like you said, joins the staff in some capacity tutoring hitters. I wonder what kind of Manager he would make down the road.

Think the Reds will be really exciting the next 5-7 years. Of course, have to keep guys healthy. Should be lots of HRs in the future. Can see Steer, EDLC, CES with 30+...actually see CES with 40+. McLain/Benson with 25, Marte will be joining the party by this time next year and should be good for 25. TS/Fraley for 20 or so and a bunch of young, promising hitters coming up behind them. Big dreams but as they learn the game/pitchers and playing in a small GABP it could happen.

Re Votto/manager...there's a pretty solid theory that great players don't necessarily make great managers. Rose was ordinary, Ted Williams was terrible. Theory was the game came so easily to them that they seldom had the patience needed to develop players. Guys like Sparky, LaSorda, Stengal etc were mostly subs and were willing to let guys progress at their own rate. Anyway, hope Votto stays involved.

Story out this morning that Jonathan India is on the trade block for a pitcher. If you have to trade someone, India is the one with all the infielders we have in the minors.

Always thought that was likely to happen but thought it would be during the off season. With team progress ahead of schedule that puts other stuff ahead of schedule too. Infield of CES, McLain, EDLC, Marte 1B to 3B and Steer in LF makes me all tingly.

Seems like one of those things that needs to be kept in-house and not made public unless something materializes. Can't help but to wonder if it will have an impact at all on team chemistry just thinking about the possibility. Sometimes, the best moves are the ones not made. It seems inevitable the Reds will eventually move on from India just like they do nearly everyone which would not make him special in that regard. However, as it has been said multiple times here whenever we discussed this, the move makes most sense in the offseason when you can start fresh with the 2024 team and Marte gets called up.

Saw where Michael Lorenzen is getting interest from Houston & Tampa Bay. While I like Lorenzen, this is an example of a pitcher not to trade India for. One of the articles I read said the pitcher would have to be one with team control and not a 2-month rental. Have to be smart about it. Lorenzen having a career season is going to be expensive and India has the level of potential to demand a pitcher with more than 2 months on his contract left. Give the league the vibes that India is 'expendable' rather than an asset and bound to get lowballed with the trade offers.

Still not seeing a major trade with this team being as competitive as it is minus arguably their 2 best arms and with 6 candidates in total to be future starters in the very near future. That said, seems to me they would have to trade a starter or 2 to get 1 very good one.

EDLC just murdered a ball. Robbed of an HR to lead off the game but left no doubt on that one. 456 ft with a velocity of 113.

Reds will be lucky to win this game. Seven walks by the pitchers. Lots of mistakes. Almost everything so far but still have only given up 2 runs but how long can that last?

Absolutely have to go get a real setup man. Can't stand watching them piss away these games and losing by 1. So many of them are not only worn out and others just don't trust them at all in high-leverage situations.

Reds played with fire all night before finally falling. Brewers were 1 for 15 with RISP before bottom of 9th. Need to crank up the offense, I'm sorry but having Votto stuck in the middle of the lineup is no longer working. Guy's hitting like .170.

They need to switch Benson and Votto in the batting order.

Hate to lose him mid season, because he's been a real part of why they are where they are, but his playing time has definitely been cut and he's moved down the lineup. Was hoping that would have been an off-season move. True team player and great clubhouse guy, but moving him will help them get a more consistent lineup set.

Need to designate a second closer for the stretch run too. give Diaz two of every three opportunities. He needs the rest and no more of this using him 3-4 days in a row.

Starting to hate the Brewers almost as much as I hate the Cardinals.

Folks want to blame the bullpen? Now?

Starters are going deeper into games as compared to the first half and the BP is getting the rest they needed and it's showed on the scoreboard minus a game or two. Idk how much more we can expect from this whole staff minus Greene and Lodolo.

For whatever reason this team gets tight when playing the Brewers. It's manifested by all the mistakes they make. Even when they get good pitching.

Get the feeling the Reds want Sims in that role but can't seem to make the commitment. Farmer has past closing experience, Busenitz has 7 saves in AAA.

I trust Sims to get the job done especially for jams like he got out of in Arizona and the closing experience during 2021 before the injury. If that is how they feel about their 2nd most reliable reliever who has been here since 2018 then Cincinnati certainly could use another to stabilize the bullpen. Especially one with experience in October if Cincinnati makes it that far. Another reliable arm would do wonders for this bullpen. Haven't seen a team that couldn't use help yet during the stretch run. They are middle of the row, 15th in team bullpen ERA in the entire MLB and pitched the 6th most innings in all of MLB so far.
