Reds

Hoping they'll start playing these young guys on a regular basis. Has to be tough playing a half a game or a full game then not play for 2-3 days.

Santillan/Antone...don't know. I'm not expecting much from either, whatever the Reds get will be gravy. Surprised, make that shocked, we aren't seeing at least one of the young catchers. Makes me think those guys may be nowhere near ready.
Would be in favor of adding a few more split squad games to get more at-bats for these young guys.

You're right, expectations need to be realistic for how long they have been out. Have to add Sims into that too missing quite a bit of the last 2 seasons. Thankfully the Reds learned from their mistake bringing in some veteran catchers who have looked good this Spring Training in the event Stephenson goes down again.

CES and Marte have certainly looked the part and McLain as well. Slow start for ELDC. Hope Karcher makes the roster out of ST, deserves an opportunity at the MLB level. Want to see more of Lyon Richardson holding a 40-man roster spot and at 23 years old should have appeared in more than 1 game so far instead of the minor league journeymen pitchers like Busenitz & Lively who have in the same game twice decided to implode. Easily 2 more wins this Spring Training without them. Otherwise, the bullpen is strong and felt it would be a strength going into the season with Diaz, Farmer, Cruz, Sims, Sanmartin, Gibaut, whatever Santillan & Antone can offer when they return.
Not sure what you or others are seeing in Sanmartin that makes you think he is a strength on this team. Wouldn't be on this team if he wasn't a lefty.

A lefty option in the bullpen that can eat innings, give a spot start if needed. He's really the only option to come in for an injury or SP ran out of the game early outside of Overton if he makes the team. Depends on the 4-5 spots are filled out between Weaver, Cessa, Dunn, Overton & Williamson and who will be a long reliever out of the bullpen, starting rotation or in AAA.

Being a left handed reliever is literally his only advantage and an area the Reds failed to address beyond the signing of Alex Young. IMO not really a strength with his bloated 6.32 ERA in 2022. Can lose 100 games with him as easy as you can without him. Multiple guys fit that LR role with better career numbers whether it is Overton, Dunn & Weaver.

Weaver showing why he should not have been signed giving up 5 of the runs in the 6-4 loss to the White Sox today.

Looking on MLB transactions looks like Reds brought up something like 11 minor leaguers to take away even more ABs from DLC, McClain, CES, Marte, Steer, et al. Amazingly stupid.

Lopsided loss by Reds to KC Sat. Overton continues to pitch himself off the 40-man, late game struggles by Sims, Diaz, and Karcher. Big day for EDLC with a triple and a HR.

CES continues to mash in a split squad game, Steer with 3 hits. Pitching dragging down the team.

Game 2 pitching not much better in the 10-9 comeback over Oakland. 3 runs a piece by Greene, Gibaut & Guerrero. CES went deep again and Steer with a HR/Double. Barrero RBI Double. Martini RBI triple. Casali went deep again in the Royals game. Took the game off TV for Cavaliers pregame.

Nice comeback vs As. Loved seeing young guys hammer. Is the FO paying attention??

Good question. Where has Will Benson been lately especially no ABs in the SS games unless I missed something. Going to be hard to justify keeping CES down raking with a .636 avg and McLain .600 which is one thing I said since the AZFL, hope something clicks for him between then and ST.

It's clear they have sluggers waiting in the minors to come through and help this team. Hopefully we'll see some make their debut in 2023. Thought pitching would be a strength of this team and it still may be. Off to a slow start in ST from guys the Reds relied on heavily in 2022. Even Diaz a little shaky to start. Figured he'd be ahead right now given he is in the WBC.

Regarding Benson, TIFWIW saw something about paternity leave. Don't know if that was true or not since teams usually update that status.

Glad to see him back in the lineup today picking up where he left off 1-2, run scored. Lost 8-5 Angels. Ramos with another hit. 2 hits for ELDC & Newman. Arroyo & Newman with an RBI double. ELDC, Myers & Vosler drove in runs for the highlights of Game 1. Norris & Farmer gave up 3 runs, Strickland 2 runs.

The bats came alive in Game 2. 12-4 over Oakland. 3 scoreless innings for Lodolo, 2 scoreless for Phillips. Lively lit up for 3 runs again, must be his magic number. CES 2 hits, RBI single. Frield 2 hits, 2-run single. Steer 2 hits, 2-run single. Fraley & Quintana each with 2 RBIs. McLain with a hit, 2 runs scored. Siani RBI single and 2 hits.

Roster cuts should start this week. From comments made during Reds-As game Sunday, not real hopeful young guys will be part of the Reds going North. FO looks to continue their slow dragging process.

Just got back from Florida and 2 days of Spring Training. Since I previously asked you guys for advice, I'll relay this story.

Mets-Nationals was mostly a bust, but my 9 year old son had the time of his life at the Cardinals-Astros game. We got to go on the main field for batting practice. And while my son wasn't able to get to meet Nolan Arenado (his 2nd favorite player behind Trout), he got signatures from Juan Yepez, Dylan Carlson, and Brendan Donovan. Then he had a great interaction (signed ball, conversation, and picture) with Jordan Walker. I know he's a St Louis Cardinal, but that dude is going to be a star. And honestly, he made a fan of me as he was really fantastic with my son.

After that, we went to our seats by the Astros dugout. No Altuve, Alvarez, or Pena that day, but he got signed balls from Kyle Tucker, Jose Abreu, and Chas McCormick plus a couple other prospects. Then in the 6th inning, Dixon Machado (had a couple cups of coffee in the big league) gave him his game used bat. He signed it as well during the next inning. It was an awesome experience for my kid that he'll never forget. He was beaming.

Highly recommend serious baseball fans get to Spring Training at least once--especially if you have a kid who loves MLB. It's a really great experience.

Awesome! Glad you all had a fun experience down there and had a good time.

Those will be great memories when you reach my age, 75. Glad you got your kid involved too. I always wanted to do that but that ugly 4 letter word, W-O-R-K, got in the way. Kids school too. I was raised near a town that had AA baseball, I had to settle for catching those games and following rising prospects. That was fun too!

Yep, it was great. Took 3 days off work and the kids are home schooled. Even got to throw in a day at Disney for my daughter.

We have the AA Smokies here in East TN, and go to 10-12 games a year. Honestly, the Minor League experience is usually more fun. That was one of the great things about Spring Training--it was major leaguers in a minor league style atmosphere.

If the Reds go North, they'll wind up in Alberta, not Ohio.

Good win 6-1 over Colorado. Chase Anderson pitched 2 scoreless innings. Cerda 2-run home run. Barrero RBI triple, 2 hits. CES with another home run. Keep this up they will have to promote him like India out of ST in 2021, killing it in ST!! Vosler home run. Benson continues to impress 3 hits, RBI single and his 4th stolen base. McLain stolen base and a run scored.

Watched Reds-As Sunday, thought Sadak/Lecure really lowballed CES which tells me the FO has no intention of his opening the season in Cincy.

I actually preferred minor league games for the atmosphere reason. Was able to see many games in old Bill Meyer Stadium in Knoxville. Beauty of that park for fans was players had to go thru the concourse to reach dressing rooms. Made it easy for autograph seekers. TN Smokies moving away from Sevierville, building a new downtown park in Knoxville, probably ETA '25.

Try to catch Lookouts at Smokies early in the year, early Chatt roster looks prospect heavy but probably won't be there long.

Have to think CES is pulling a Jonathan India spring training blow up that will basically force their hand into bringing him up. Dude is raking right now, another homer yesterday. At this point they have to take him and start him at 1B till Votto is ready.

At this point, have to believe Anderson & Overton are pitching for the same roster spot out of the bullpen with the edge to Anderson right now. Also, any word on Rece Hinds this spring? Hurt? Haven't seen anything on him for a guy that was in the Arizona Fall League. It is interesting that with his injury history that he was the one the Reds decided to transition to the outfield to cover more ground.

Haven't seen him yet if he's been there. Seen Allen & Hendrick though. The Reds made some roster cuts. Cerda, McGarry & Johnny Pereda reassigned to minor league camp. Abbott, Phillips, Busenitz & Lively were the pitchers cut.

7-3 Reds over San Francisco. India 2 hits, 2 runs scored. Pinder 2 hits, 3 runs scored. Friedl 2 hits, 3-run home run. Stephenson showing no signs of any issues show far with his consistency at the plate with an RBI single. Myers RBI single. Ashcraft 3 innings, 2 runs. Kuhnel 1 run. Scoreless innings by Karcher, Nutof, Sims, Guerrero & Wynne.

10-9 win over San Diego. Weaver, Strickland, Brooks Crawford with 2 runs, Williamson 3 runs, 2 ER. India RBI double. Myers RBI single, 2 hits. Fraley SB, 1 hit, 1 RBI. Steer 2-run double. Benson RBI single. Austin Hendrick with a 2-run home run in the game and CES hit a triple. Marte sac fly that drove in a run. McLain RBI double. It's good to see the offense putting up runs still and show the potential of what the lineup can be eventually. I do think the pitching will come around and could be a strength for this team. They will go as far as the young pitching takes them in 2023. Lodolo & Greene even if Hunter has been rusty don't worry me. Would like to see more out of Ashcraft & Williamson get it going and haven't seen enough from Cessa this spring now in the WBC. Weaver doesn't impress me at all.

I know Steer had only 1 month with the Reds last year, CES yet to debut. Have a feeling though between Steer & CES, the Twins are going to wind up hating the trade for Mahle giving up these 2 before it's all said and done. Steep price. On a contending team with a solid starting rotation, Mahle is a 4th option in the rotation, 3 at best.

Just another example of that Nick Krall magic.
