Reds

A testament to how awful both Moustakas & Moran are with the sad state of the Reds.

On the season Mike Moustakas has 252 ABs, 7 home runs & 25 RBIs.
Colin Moran has 104 ABs, 5 home runs & 23 RBIs. Both are sad and it is even worse when a minor league scrub will likely surpass the production of a $20 million player pending how long Moose is out in so many fewer at-bats.

Steer should be up right now. For all the good the Reds did restocking the farm system rated in the Top 5 now I believe, they are still promoting players like Moran over Steer.

I know Fraley, Friedl and Moran have hit a bit of late but those three plus Fairchild should never, ever be in the lineup at the same time. You maybe can limp thru a weekend series with such but you can't go a whole year with those guys. Reds are begging for a 25 game sub-.500 season if so.

I've read elsewhere that the Reds will have to add up to 10 minor leaguers to the 40 man roster this off season or run the risk of losing them to the Rule 5 draft. So....who will the Reds dump from the current 40 man?

Reds claimed Chase Anderson off the scrap heap and starting him Mon night. Chase is a good name, Reds will likely be chasing balls all around GABP.

Hopefully Moose is the first to go. They just need to cut their losses their and send him packing like they did Shogo. Would say Minor should go too, but next year will be another lost season so I guess he can be trotted out there as a number 4 or 5 guy just to have some veteran presence.

Saw where Moose is done for the year so that's a start.

He was solid for the Brewers, especially in 2017 winning 12 games and a 2.74 ERA. Predominantly in relief the last 3 years so we'll see how he handles it now though I'm happy to see this over some rejects I've never heard of.

I'm not expecting it to work out either I'm just saying he has been good in the past is all. It's at least someone we have heard of instead of a career minor league journeyman with an ERA of 10.00. Wouldn't be opposed to him sticking around in the bullpen. He's at least been serviceable in that role.

Off topic I guess but while watching Justin Dunn pitch recently, I thought he reminded me of somebody....finally thought who. Are you old enough to recall an early to mid '90s RHP named John Roper? About the same size, very similar stuff. Roper showed promise while coming thru the Reds system then developed arm or shoulder problems and was finished. Hoping for a better future for Dunn.

John Roper
Yes, definitely remember John Roper and that is a good comparison from the past in regards to Justin Dunn today. About the time Tom Browning started to dwindle with the shoulder injuries and Rijo's elbow injuries snake bit the Reds pitching staff. Pete Schourek was outstanding on the 1995 playoff team and never really recaptured that same glory again. I really do hope Dunn gives the rest something to show for in this trade and Williamson sometime soon. If Fraley can be a serviceable 4th OF option on that list instead of a throw in complementary piece it may work out. Right now Seattle is reaping the benefits of that trade cherry picking the Reds roster.

Hoping Dunn works out, he needs something good to happen. In his interviews he seems likeable, a pro. Hoping for the best for him and the Reds.

You can really tell he does have passion for the game and missing time with injury definitely hurt unlike some guys in Mike Moustakas who have more IL trips than home runs. This is a despicable article as if the complaints his way are unwarranted. When you make $20 million and do nothing, criticism is warranted. He needs to retire at this point. Not going to get any better but won't because the money is too good.

The last thing we need is the Reds media enabling this organization for the shortcomings over the years. I love Jim Day's passion and enthusiasm, deserves a medal as he no doubt loves the Reds. Beyond him, I don't want to hear it from anyone else justifying this. Moose has been given ample opportunity when healthy at 4 different spots in the lineup from 3rd, 2B, 1st & DH. Even Welsh this week alluded to how Suarez getting dealt accommodates Mike at 3rd.

Sadak is insufferable. His constant propping up of Senzel is over the top. He's a .230s singles hitter who is a huge liability in CF. This talk of "we'll make him a super utility guy!" is a crock. They're actually saying "get him out of CF before he screws up again." Freidl/Amora have it all over Senzel as CFers. This "super utility" BS is the first real positive hint that they're dumping him in the off season.

If I'm just watching games I usually do so muted but if I'm doing something else, which I'm usually doing, I listen. But Sadak......UGH!!

I'm with you on Sadak. He's seems like a company man that won't be critical of the Reds. Miss Marty flat out telling you like it is without mincing words. The 1st red flag on Senzel would have been his injury history early on and that it might have been good to trade him before the prospect status vanished. Bailey, Senzel, Moustakas & the devastating injuries to Mesoraco just to name a few have all significantly hurt the Reds.

These announcers are hired by the Reds, they have the job at their whim. I get that. But honesty should figure in too. I do appreciate LeCure/Welsh sometimes opening up. Week or two ago Eric Davis, who is some kind of "advisor" to the FO and works with outfielders in the off-season, pretty much lambasted Aquino's piss-poor approach which was refreshing. Guess we have to keep an open mind when we watch these games! :)

Exactly, can't bite the hand that feeds them. Even Marty says there could never be another one like him that would be openly critical of the team. I suppose the only real hope if for former players of the past like Rose from time to time and recent ones like Castellanos to speak their minds. Dibble has some work on TV with the Nats and previously with the Best Damn Sports Show, bet he wouldn't hold back.

It would have to come from someone who wouldn't necessarily need the job with little to lose. Like Paul O'Neill with the Yankees or even Barry Larkin but Barry is generally quite positive since starting to call the Reds games. I like seeing Barry back in the organization. He was gone for so long and hope these struggles don't make him leave the booth.

Larkin is another of those FO "advisors" the Reds have but he also works with middle infielders in the off season. Don't know how many people know but he's fluent in Spanish and functional in Portuguese, helps with Latin players. I admire that in him, he learned at an early age so he could communicate with Latinos.

Good point there, I tend to forget he has been working with the infielders and routinely speaks high about India and big on Barrero too. Did not know that about him being fluent in Spanish as well as knowing Portuguese. Doubt it ever happens because of the daily grind/stress and only a part-time broadcaster for the home games but he would've been on my list as a manager or some role on the coaching staff.

By all means lets keep Stoudt & Brandon Williamson in the minors. I'm sorry but bullshit doesn't even begin to describe this. The Reds FO need to get their heads out of their asses. You have Zuech with a 15 ERA and no one ever heard of him. These jokes keep getting chance after chance over deserving prospects. I've said it before and I'll say it again, MLB needs to appoint someone from the outside to operate this organization like what happened when Jerry Colanego was assigned to fix the dumpster fire that were the Philadelphia 76ers. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!!!

Guess the Reds FO doesn't want the clock on Stoudt, BW, DLC, Steer, et al to start just yet but who are they fooling? Reds won't resign those guys and those guys would be idiots to resign with this bunch of losers. They'll haul at their first chance, rightfully so. FO has known all summer they would be trading Castillo/Mahle, their plan was to sign every rag arm with a bum shoulder to replace them. It was grossly unfair to trot out Chase Anderson last night. A guy who had not started in several years and has barely pitched at all....what could possibly go wrong?

The stupidest thing is not even having Spencer Steer on the 40-man roster making him available in the Rule 5 Draft this winter. What is their excuse for holding that up? Cincinnati never had any intention of Elly De La Cruz being called up this year and frankly are they going to hide behind the same excuses when they leave him in Louisville until mid-June and then debate whether to call him up or start the clock in 2024. You're absolutely right in the fact they are just going to going through this same rebuild here in another 5 years or so depending how long they're stuck in this current rut. The FO has stretched Reds fans patience for all the mileage they can get with it and I'm tired of taking the approach of 'looking at the big picture' down the road in the future line of thinking they expect from us. This organization has been through enough fire sales by now they should have figured out how to win and weather the storm. The Reds are not the least bit competitive except against other .300 baseball clubs.

So Dunn is pitching a solid game, 4-1 after 4 innings with a tired bullpen/thin starting rotation and gets pulled because he pissed David Bell off? Am I reading that right or what?

Dunn says he had some shoulder tightness but reading into the tone of his postgame comments wasn't happy that the decision was already made to pull him with his shoulder injury history.

Really don't blame them for pulling him given his history. Hopefully he can make his next start.

See that Reds have moved lefty 1B Alex McGarry from AA to AAA. Don't really understand why he isn't getting more pub in the talk about Top 30 prospects in Reds system. This guy is 24y/o, hitting .270 with 26 HRs/76 RBIs. Can anybody enlighten me as to why he's being ignored?

Of course now knowing the facts after the game, I don't either. Going off what we knew at the time and scene between Bell & Dunn, the broadcasters having no idea what removing him was all about at the time. Only reasonable to think the move to pull him was strange then. Bell was confident that Dunn will make his next start in the postgame. Taking precautions not to risk any real damage.

Steer getting called up with 32-year old Fernando Cruz in the bullpen. In need of arms down this stretch.

Reds finally called up Spencer Steer as well as career minor league relief pitcher Fernando Cruz. Transferred Moustakis and Hoffman to 60 day IL.

LOL, you beat me to it by one minute!

Cruz has 20+ saves, night as well see what he can do at MLB level.

There was some buzz about the Reds signing Johnny Cueto briefly at the start of the spring once the lockout ended. The Reds made the trade for Mike Minor making $10 million this year. The White Sox for $4.2 million, Cueto has 7 wins, 2.93 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP.

I would be for the Reds filling out the rotation next year for a veteran presence plus the obvious, a fan favorite and something to be happy about in what will be another tough season in 2023. Cincinnati will most likely sign a veteran pitcher for stability and highly unlikely to fill a 5-man rotation of pitchers all with 2 years or less experience in MLB as we've seen the big 3 Greene, Lodolo & Ashcraft get injured. If the Reds do commit to going young with 5 starters in the rotation out of spring, then this is all irrelevant but think about in recent years some of the names the Reds have signed during a rebuild mode, Scott Feldman, Arroyo, Tanner Roark, Alfredo Simon, Jason Marquis, (Dan Straily unexpected quality signing), Matt Harvey, Yovani Gallardo. Point being, organizations rarely roll out inexperienced rotations by choice and the Reds did not begin the season that way either with Castillo, Mahle & later Minor.

Who knows if Cueto can come close to that in 2023? That's not the point I'm making. Worst case scenario he is Mike Minor which the Reds already have. I don't even care if he has an ERA in the low 4's instead of 2.93 when the Reds are still rebuilding. Even though it was a disaster, the Reds weren't winning anything in 2017 and I did not mind seeing Arroyo finish his career as a Red. This situation isn't as far-fetched as Arroyo was so it's not unheard of that Cincinnati makes a transaction like this. I would love for as many starts as possible for the young prospects to develop at the MLB level too but knowing the grind of a season and the approach Cincinnati has at bringing along prospects, I can't imagine that inexperienced of a starting rotation to start off the season with.

Cincinnati should have never let Michael Lorenzen go. A versatile pitcher who can come in at any point of the game, setup man, long relief and solid notching 7 saves in 2019. He can give you a start when needed and allow the Reds to continue to develop prospects throughout this rebuild. Justin Dunn could potentially fill this void better than any in-house option on the roster today not counting a starter in the minors converting to the pen. Dunn will still get his opportunities to start and frankly haven't seen any reason for him not to since joining Cincinnati as he has gradually improved. Still doesn't give you the experienced option in the rotation like Cueto but I don't see Johnny at this stage of his career yet bouncing around between the bullpen and starting rotation. He might just retire before that point.
