Realistic coaching replacements for Cal

Hmmmm....seems he beat your hero this year at Rupp
If you gave Golden or Pearl our roster this season, you are probably looking at a number 1 seed and one of the tournament favorites. You are talking about two likely lottery picks and 7 future NBA players getting flat out punked by Oakland. After a week of trash talk.

Bruce Pearl is perfect fit, and I think it's the only Job he'd actually leave Auburn for. Let's be real, Hurley, Wright isn't walking thru that door
My issue with Pearl is his age. The more times you switch coaches the better chance you have of hiring the wrong one. In this day and age coaches make the programs, not the other way around. With Pearl you're basically signing yourself up for another coaching search in 5-7 years or so.

It's hilarious how some of you are still stuck on these three names. It'll never happen. They have less than zero urge to come back to college.
Main thing is get calipari out of here enough is enough

I would take him over your hero who can't beat St Peters, K St, or Oakland. Powerhouse programs ...🤣🤣
You mean there is still pumpers supporting cal after that embarrassing beat down that 300.000 a year coach gave him unbelievable

You make Donovan and Wright tell you no. As quietly as possible because they probably will. I do not want Drew or Pearl for varying reasons. I would be happy with Oates or Hoiberg, or Pope

Jay Wright hates college ball now and stayed at Nova for years – a place where the fans aren't insane and the pressure to win isn't turned to 11. Why the actual HELL would that man come out of retirement to coach at one of the most stressful jobs in CBB?

People complained and/or joked about Pitino being greasy and Cal being shady, and we're just going to go after Pearl? Dude is a walking, breathing tarmac cart full of baggage.

College coaches have to do so much crap nowadays that Stevens and Donovan never had to deal with in their day thanks to NIL. In my opinion, there's no way in hell they leave their cushy, established jobs in major cities for Kentucky or any other college team.

Really wish Shaka Smart had a better resume. Could still be an outside shot, but he really ate s**t at Texas. I think Tony Bennett and Scott Drew could get calls. Drew interests me the most in this hypothetical "Cal fired" situation.

Barnes is ancient. Sean Miller is crooked. Izzo is past his prime. Self is Self....

UK might have to take a shot on a largely unproven coach on down the road. That's spooky as hell. The last up-and-comer we hired put Jorts in a bathroom stall as punishment, so we'll have to vet the next one better.

I'm not advocating for him, but what are the worts with Pope? And no, I don't love the fact that he played here, but it could be motivation. I don't hate the idea of a safe, fan friendly Pope being a 4-5 year stop gap if your top two or three choices said no.

Bruce Pearl would fit right in. He might even be able to keep some of the recruits and some of the guys on the team.
He knows talent and he's a player's coach.

I vote for Bruce Pearl.
He would take the job also probably for less than top money.

There’s a lot of rumblings that Tony Bennett might be fired or at least that his chair is on fire. I agree though.

Did he have a team lose to a 16 seed for the first time in NCAA history? Yes. Were his best teams world beaters? Also yes. The man can coach. Virginia might be looking to part ways after so long, but sometimes a coach just needs a change of scenery.

Great post. Made some good points and made me laugh a few times. I'd forgotten about Jorts being banished to the bathroom stall.

One thing Rick does he is defense first his practices are geared for that if you don't play defense you're not going to play for him he will run you off only coach can fix this mess

Well, I don't think going after the best is ridiculous. I dont really care what people think. But hey, at least we agree that we need to jettison the current coach.
That part is not arguable. It's just the OP said realistic. There's a huge difference between realistic and Donovan, Steven, and Wright.

T. J. Otzelberger, Danny Hurley, Bruce Pearl, Todd Golden, Grant McCasland, Frank Vogel, and Mark Pope are present coaches that I would hope will be on the short list. Don’t know if any are interested but UK needs to ask. Hope this process begins in April.

You know, after re-thinking this, Id almost be willing to give someone like golden a two year contract. This may beneficial since these younger coaches are more in tune with the transfers, nil, mixing one and dones with experience. It could work.

Being in RP under a 5 year agreement to save the program and clean his UK legacy and end it the right way. Right his wrongs. When 1 title on a redemption tour

(Not actually serious unless he’d agree to do it for 1m a year to allow the university to pay Cal’s awful buyout as a “you scratch mine I’ll scratch yours scenario)

Hoiberg has taken a dead Nebraska program back to respectability young early 50’s was good at Iowa St won big 12 and Coach of the year has NBA experience and connections ex NBA Coach. He would be my first option if bigger names say no. Pearl wouldn’t be awful wants to win a title badly. Still make Hurley say no first.

Golden, or anyone else, isn't leaving their current job for a 2 yr deal. You can make it a 5 yr deal for optics sake. It's the buyout that matters.

Oh good lord no. You think fans sleep in Rupp now? They will need to revamp Rupp with cots and recliners if Bennett brings his grind it style to Kentucky.

No. Thank. You.

Don't agree with TJ, Golden, or Pope. Don't know who McCasland is.

Agree with Hurley, Pearl and Vogel.

Don't agree with the process beginning in April. I think it needs to begin today.

I like the story that we take a flyer on a young Div II or Div III coach and he takes off.

If he was younger, I would have loved another stint with Rick Pitino. He is too old now though. I wasn't old enough to know Rupp but in my lifetime. Pitino was the greatest Kentucky coach. His style is what I think of when I think Kentucky basketball.
For those of us old enough to remember the Rick Pitino years they were the best imo.

A lot of coaches these days want the least amount of pressure but the most amount money. Watching Alabama football, which is probably the hottest job in any college sport, have to settle for at least that we know of the fourth or fifth guy on the list worries me a little bit.

Then again, what do we have to lose?
Not true only two coaches talked to DeBoer and Norvell.

- Scott Drew (buddies with Mitch, would most likely take the job if offered, would kill it here with our resources)
- TJ Otzelberger (young, hungry, elite defense and modern style of play)
- Nate Oats (doubt Mitch would pursue him, but I can't leave his name off the list, as I think he would take the job)
- Tommy Lloyd (bottom of the list until we see how he does in the tournament)

Among the realistic candidates, I think those are the four names.

It’s not going to happen because of our great Athletic Director. Calipari has the power to call all the shots because of his Contract. He’s not going to leave that type of money on the table. Our fan base will be held hostage for years due to that. Calipari the Great Excuse Maker!
Don’t think Cal will be calling the shots. Guaranteed there’s some serious stuff going on behind the scenes, the huge buyout notwithstanding.

Hopefully the trigger will be pulled.

How can it not be? It’s only money.
