R.J. Barrett talks Kentucky visit

My sources say the UK staff feels confident. As of today. Heard it on the radio. I think I'll go with how the staff feels. Same host said they (staff) felt good about Knox. The rest of America said Duke. I saw how that played out.

I hope...

Does it bother you that they are basically the only ones saying that?
Not really. Doesn't mean we're going to get him but there's about a million scenarios that could be in place here. Every kid goes about his recruitment differently. It's quite possible he told the staff something like, "I really feel like I'm going to go here but I'm going to go ahead and take all my visits." He wouldn't say that to any other school he's visiting and therefore they don't have the same vibe as the guys that talk directly to the UK staff.

Again, I don't know anything more than anyone else on the site. But I just think it's ridiculous to completely write off the possibility of getting the kid because of a very short quote that was given.

I have this disgusting feeling that Duke will end up with a super class that includes Barrett.

I shouldn't be surprised by the true blue UK fan poster who "liked " your comment... he seems to be ate up with Duke... very odd :/

That being said , he's an amazing poster with solid insights and opinions on all things UK.

Not worried about him going to Duke but even if he does UK will land a top 2 class. Like always. If you worry about recruiting with Cal you just are too fragile to follow things like this. We have the best recruiter in the world and that ain't argueable .

THIS.

The obsession and nut slurping of Duke/ K the past few weeks on this board has gotten ridiculous. We literally look obsessed ... like we're "inferior "

The lack of intelligence astounds me.

Nike wanted Reddish at UK, Lebron did too. That's why they were meeting with him. Look at Klutch sports client list, it's a who's who of UK players and Rich Paul was pushing for Kentucky for that reason.

Nike and Lebron James "wanted" reddish at UK? What do you base this opinion on? Seems kinda random...

Lebron James wanted him at UK? I mean possibly yeah ... but I've never seen Lebron mention this 17 year old high school junior ...

That's what I'm talking about. So just because a recruit doesn't pick U.K. They are being outworked?!?!

Not exactly sure what your asking, but I don't see how it's unfathomable that the UK staff could get out-worked / out-recruited. It's happened in the past, it'll happen again. I'm just hoping that's not the case for the #1 recruit in 2018.

Call me crazy but I'd like to remain the place where the very best recruits choose to play. Our current system requires it for us to be successful.

UK will land one of Barrett or Zion, relax. Cal would have offered king if he wasn't going to land any of his targets.

I mean if you really think the best recruiter of all time had his top priority on campus for an entire weekend as his first official visit and just didn't have anything planned or know what to say to the kid, then feel free to believe that, I guess. Sure it caught Cal by surprise that RJ just walked up to him one morning and he had never even heard of the kid.

I feel like Barrett was misquoted / misunderstood, is trolling Duke at Cal's behest, or is truly disinterested in UK. Since I can't imagine Cal was as vague as Barrett made it sound, I'm guessing he was just misquoted.

If Cal was truly vague about how he'd play Barrett.......... then that makes me wonder if Cal wants Zion the most because if you really really wanted Barrett, you sell him on being starter at 2... but being positionless in the fact he'll play at several positions.... (well mostly 1,2,and 3)

Maybe Zion and his people dont want to play with another big star like Barrett.??? I dont know but Cal not having a plan for an elite player ??????? Something has to be up there.

As Michael Jackson told Paul McCartney once----"You keep dreaming..." (I know you didn't post it that way WildSTL but it fit.) Cal still has his mojo, don't doubt him. Whether he gets Barrett or not, don't doubt him.....

Not buying that one.

I bet it's nothing more than Cal saying there are tons of ways to play and highlight RJ and what that looks like exactly will play out more specifically when the roster rounds out.

RJ just didn't feel like giving the long drawn out explanation.. and said what he said. Not a big deal whatsoever, imo.

Exactly this.

Cal was on the sidelines coaching the team that RJ dropped 38 points on. He knows that he can play RJ a wide variety of ways, because the kid is a stud. Because he's versatile, Cal I'm sure basically told him, "You're a true position-less player. You can do a lot of things and are an elite talent. No matter how the team looks or who comes back or who we add, you can play any way with any team."

Not sure how I feel about a player asking "Where do I fit?" and our response being "Well, we'll see when it all unfolds". I'm not sure that's the answer RJ wanted, even if it was the honest answer, the one an upstanding person should say. At this point though, eff it.. just tell the kid what he wants.. that's apparently what K and Self do:

"Set for life"
"Kentucky will ruin you"
"Don't worry about being eligible"

Still, sounds like it went well otherwise

And I'm not sure how I'd feel if Cal told a kid how a TEAM will play when there isn't a single signed recruit yet... sheesh.

Those two will be wearing the right shade of blue come next season as will quick and the shittu kid

If you guys haven't read this, please do so. It's much more detailed about the visit than the 2 sentences people are freaking out over and is much more positive. I liked this quote particularly.

"Man, there were so many good things about it. So many good things about the visit. For example, the approach they take with individual athletes, where they are now and how they get from A to B.”

He may not have sounded like an enthralled little school girl after his visit but if he's making this a business decision, I really think he'll see that UK is his best bet.

And I'm not sure how I'd feel if Cal told a kid how a TEAM will play when there isn't a single signed recruit yet... sheesh.

It did seem weird to me. I understand Cal's stance of "We won't baby you".. that's a proven pitch that works, and it's worked before in recruiting.

But man, pretty ballsy to do it now with no recruits, and news of 3-4 guys last week that wouldn't be coming to Kentucky (King, Reddish, etc.). I'd be telling RJ everything he wants to hear. But then again, Cal's the best in the biz.. Sometimes you have to be blunt with these kids. You could argue that we don't WANT the recruits who need everything spoon fed to them..

Hey Smashcat, did his AAU coach go on the visit with Barrett and his family?

[laughing] Not Smash but if he didn't go he should have. What a recruiting pitch. I wonder if Cal is as good or did he just roll the ball out. (Or the scholly paperwork)

Oh, and a heckuv a first post after having an account for 5 years...[eyeroll]

BBUK, excuse the fu--out of me for making my first comment after having a account for 5 years. If you look at my name, you may understand why I didn't have time to sit and spend my day responding on a message board. Just be thankful you have that opportunity.

He didn't. He went with Shai Alexander on his visit though and talked with Barrett's family after RJ's visit.

And he said this:

Barrett “talks to Shai every day,” Washington said. “Shai is like his big brother. They train in the summer, they hang out, Shai works with him and shows him a lot of stuff. Shai is very serious and focused, so if he picks a school, you really gotta take it seriously.”

You're not the only retired soldier on this board if you are a retired soldier (Not stating you are or you aren't), I'll take your word on it. I am thankful for a lot of things. It does strike me funny the times some in your situation finally decide to post. (You're not the first in your situation to do that.) (Which is why I commented in the first place.)

From my observation you sounded like you were taking a swipe at Smash. (Not that he needs defending but he's a good poster now for a while in my book.)

Just an aside though, it takes very few seconds to respond as you found out with your first post. If time was all it was then taking some time to study time management may be a friend to you as we all have the same 24 hours in a day. (But it's not my business what you do.). (If it was your desire not to post I surely (Not Shirley) respect that.)

At the same time claiming in the round about way you did that you allowed me time to post due to your service in the military and that your service to the country kept you too busy to post is kind of ignorant.

I've worked directly with soldiers in many different fields and in many different areas and other countries on a nearly daily basis since the day before 9/11. (Not that it matters.) You have your free time to do what you want. I choose to spend some of my free time on this site and posting. Thanks for your service if you served, along with many dozens of others on this site who served and also post. This from an older soldier to another. Be Good

OH, one thing I noticed after I made this post. You created the account "retiredsoldier" about five years ago. (I take it that you have been retired for about five years? I doubt you created the retiredsoldier account five years before you retired.... Just an observation after the fact. Not that it matters but your reasoning doesn't add up now that I thought about it but Oh well, it just doesn't matter. (I haven't drank anything for a couple months now. Time to start again...typing too much)

Here's to more back injuries, knees popping, tripping episodes and Beadyeyed Bloated Capel roaming the sideline this year. I personally want to thank Duke for the entertainment last year.

K's knee injury has me giddy about this year already!

Aren't you adorable. :joy:

I realize that getting the last couple recruits over us has you clowns gassed up, but c'mon... Yall dook boys are supposed to be smart! It's simple math, really.

8 > 5 titles
2,237 > 2,115 wins
.765 > .708 win percentage

And here's one more, and it's an important one... FIVE, count em, FIVE coaches have won titles here. OTOH, when your current coach goes, your shit program goes with him.

"Inferior". [roll]
