Question for Towles supporters. Not sarcastic at all.

I think our coaching staff looks at a guy like Towles and sees what he should be instead of what he is. They are convinced they can eventually get him to the level he should be at with his talent. If you didn't watch Towles play, you would look at his height and arm and think this kid is going to be an all amercian. With being a great QB, it takes more and he may never have "IT" no matter how bad the coaches want it for him. I don't think they will give up on Towles no matter what so we all better hope he flips the switch and finally gets it. If not, we are just going to be average until we go with another guy at QB. I'm excited to see Barker play, but if the coaches believe in Towles, I guess we should do the same as fans

Wasn't Pat a "highly touted QB"?

http://247sports.com/Player/Patrick-Towles-10079 vs. http://247sports.com/Player/Drew-Barker-13971

So, both pretty "Highly Touted QB"'s..... BUT, if we are splitting hairs here... Barker > Towels in recruiting rankings.. Based on teams who wanted each of them and rankings complete. That is not a concern really though, because they are both on campus and practicing every week against each other. Personally, I just would like the guy under center to win ball games and put up some nice completion percentages and QB ratings because we are definitely running the ball well... which should open some passing lanes.

Wasn't Pat a "highly touted QB"?

After seeing the game live and then re-watching, what I saw were a lot of receivers who struggled to get open to add to an offensive line that struggled to protect and struggled to open holes.
The difference in the game was Florida's receivers caught the ball when it was near them and our's only needed to make the catches that they would make 90% of the time. Pat didn't play great, he missed several throws... but with just a little help he played good enough for UK to win.

Not particularly a "highly touted" QB. He received offers from Kentucky, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Illinois, Louisville, and Vanderbilt.

Drew Barker was more "highly touted" and it isn't even close. The biggest offer PT got was from Arkansas.

Pat did just fine when given time to throw against USC. Things get a little tougher when defenses are sitting in your lap. Not every throw is going to be perfect, it's time now for our stud recievers to start making plays. We've got great playmakers, it's time they started making plays!! I just think this offense is going to check film and come up with asolution to preasure D's. this is a very good group, and a hell of a staff; they'll get it going on a consistant basis.
That's a pretty big stretch to say Patrick did just fine when given time .

Exactly. As Ive posted many times, Towles is a big part of the "pass protection" problem. Then, even when he has all day he still doesnt complete passes at a high rate; and he takes way too many coverage sacks.

Everything we know about measuring success in football tells us Towles should be great. He just isnt. Not yet anyway. There are tons of little things that are killing him, this offense, and the team. His accuracy is off, but thats physical and can be fixed by someone as athletic as he is.

The two most troubling weaknesses? His pocket presence is awful, and he lacks the ability to go through progressions. If his first read isnt there, its a sack because he's just going to hold on to the ball unsure what to do. It doesnt matter how much arm talent a QB has, if they dont know when/where to throw it.

The Towles debate is a classic one that we see throughout football...Starting QB can do no right, and back up can do no wrong...

We uk fans have a particular bad case of this...

I think a lot of people believe that UK football is a QB away from being competitive in the SEC...when in all reality we are an entire program and culture away from being competitive...

and specifically as it pertains to QBs...there is something to be said for how they are developed...it takes more than an appealing offense that airs it out...you can't just have a playbook, you have got to develop the players...

I would have no issue with the Towles discussion if there was a sure thing on the bench behind him...but there isn't...the only thing behind Towles is a lot of hype, which ironically was exactly what Pat was at one point...a lot of hype, highly recruited, destined to be the one etc...

I believe if Drew was the answer, he would be playing...I think Barker may shine one day, but that day is not here yet...he obviously hasn't even been able to beat out Pat, and i believe that he also has a lot of maturing to do...he's got a couple of silly incidents on his record that communicates he just isn't quite ready to lead men against men...chalk it up to "boys will be boys...etc" all you want, and maybe that is the case, but we can't have boys out there running around against SEC men...

and rest assured, once Drew does take over he won't get through his first game before half the fan base decides that he isn't the one and that the next guy needs to be put in ASAP...

Patrick Towles is the QB of the this team...folks need to get on board with that...barring disaster i am fairly confident that he will be the QB next season as well...

Nice way to start your post out on a straw man.

A lot of your post is actually nonsense, but let's not get into that part of it I'll just say this; if Towles is going to be the starter next year as well, Barker should take his ball and go to another school maybe even Louisville, and show you and everyone else what a terrible mistake it was spurning him for a guy with very little talent to compete in the SEC.

When Towles or who ever is quarterbacking has the time to find his receivers, he will be ok. It would have also helped if the running game had been better. Our line just got worked over by a good Florida defense.

The bottom line is we are going to have to have stronger line play for us to be very successful.

In reality Towels does not have that much experience. We are still very young at the QB position. I think when the line play gets better you will see a sharper Towels.

The coaches sees these players everyday and know who is best for their position and we have to trust their decisions.

Once again, absolute nonsense. UK is never going to have AND HAS NEVER HAD great or even good offensive lines since the 70's. Where have you been?

We need a quarterback who can throw consistently under pressure, understanding his line isn't full of Jeff Saturday's like you're waiting on. Don't you f'ing get it? Week in and week out the SEC will somewhat own our line.

We need to go with out next option judging by play on the field. Not some "give him time" bullshit that's a red herring. The guy can't throw consistently with time anyway.

Some of you good god.

Coaching football for 6 years now, I can actually tell the ones that have a damn clue what they are talking about and which ones don't.

"He needs time" - yea in the SEC he's NOT GOING TO GET IT.
"He's consistently inconsistent" - you're an idiot
"Get ready he's the qb next year" - yea, then Barker will transfer.

What a joke. I wonder what these same people do every time we run to set up 3rd and longs because our staff doesn't trust their inconsistent qb. What do they do when he throws behind receivers right I front of him?

Ignore it I'm sure.

- Oh, and we will set a record for 3rd down attempts this year. Our staff is scared to death to throw for first downs. They know he's not very good, they are just wanting more out of Barker. It isn't even about Towles, because any coach worth 2 cents knows he's nowhere near sec caliber. It's not about him, it's about Barker.

At UK we run the ball on 2nd and long because our staff has no faith in the QB. Please, allow that to sink in. We run the ball often on 2nd and long, in the toughest defensive conference in history.

/ entire issue.

Define winning? Giving up 14 to a crappy Floridian team and STILL losing isn't winning.

We nearly lost to Lafayette.

Keep your blinders on, you're going to need them.

UK, on their own 40, 2nd down an 11 to go, Towles takes the SNAPP!!!! AAA NNDDDDDD.....

Hands off to book for a 3 yard run. 3rd and long.

LMAO. Some QB we got there.

Why do so many posters say this:

"Get ready he's the qb next year" - yea, then Barker will transfer."

He already resdshirted, and he's a freshman this year.

If he sits at UK next year, he will be the starter the next two years with experience in our system and players. Also: he has the opportunity to beat PT out again, play if PT is ineffective or gets hurt.

If he transfers, he sits out next season. ZERO opportunity for snaps.

And he has those same two years to start for another team in a different system.

I must be missing something on this line of thinking?

Does he leave just because he is mad? Because playing time can only get worse.

Again, like YOU know who called that play and why.

You have no freaking idea SC, you have made some good points but this one is purely conjecture.

Dawson has proven to run the ball when you least expect it (see SC game).

Brian, it's a consistent issue with our qb. You obviously don't understand this issue. There's really only one reason to set up 3rd and longs consistently. You don't trust your qb.

The way we roll, and I see plenty of D1 players yearly leave high school only to transfer, transferring would be an option in this situation. If I had the potential of barker, no way I spend 2 or 3 years behind a guy like Patrick.

But ya know, it just depends on the players family and mindset. I know fathers who would already be talking.

I don't understand, ok. Please tell all of us how you do know for a FACT that the particular play call you mentioned was because of PT.

Can you do that?

See maybe you do not understand the question since you did not answer it and went on yet another tirade.

Why transfer if you have equal or less opportunity to play?

SC, I'd love for you to scroll to the top of this page and read all the posts.

Until your first post on this page there were several fans with differing opinions and yet there was some great points made on each side without any childishness.

Now look at your juvenile, peevish posts.

Brian, at some point, you are going to have to learn to make judgments based on your own knowledge and opinions and not on childish "fav team" pumping. All you do is run around, bickering with people about disagreeing with Calipari is wrong. Now you're bringing it to the football board, where you obviously aren't up to par on the sport.

It's not "one play" Brian, we consistently, CONSISTANTLY, set up 3rd and longs. When that happens in football, it usually means the coach doesn't trust his qb to make important throws.

I'm not suprised you're on the Towles bandwagon. You are consistent with your propaganda. All in, every time, blindly. Then of course you set straw man arguments. If you're going to do nothin but pump, just start responding to pumpers. There's plenty to chose from. Then you avoid having to cope with real situations and you can just be happy?

The college ranks are full of "elite" recruits who don't live up to their press clippings.

Both Pat and Drew were selected for the Elite11 camp...weren't they? They were both 4 star, both considered to 10 QBs in their respective classes. Right?

Tell us why the coaches who see these two practice daily and who's jobs are dependent upon results would select the lesser player? Is it a coincidence that the old OC and the new OC both selected the same guy?

I don't give two hoots about which one plays, I'm a UK fan not a Drew fan or a Pat fan. If Reese Phillips is better, put him in. But for some jack leg to read a few press clippings and decide that because this guy... Hell, what was Texas A&M doing playing that lowly 3 star QB a couple of years ago named Manziel and why didn't they replace him with any of the 4 higher rated QBs that were on their roster including a #1 rated 5 star?

Everyone knew Barker was a better prospect out of high school. This isn't about "ratings" 1,2,3,4.......

I'm not sure what Stoops is looking at, but then again, did you watch stoops game management last week? You think these guys don't screw up? In your world, do coaches NOT get fired for bad decisions?

It's not possible that stoops is making a mistake, and might even correct the mistake by the end of the year? What happens then? What do you say then?

You and Brian need to just post, "I agree with coaches, period." And save everyone time.

You realize that if Drew transferred he would have to sit out next year and only have 2 years of remaining eligibility...unless he wants to go down to a FCS school.
Perhaps he knows he isn't better than Pat?

I'm aware of that but it happens. I don't see many QB's in my profession that would say a guy that can't hit 10 yard moving targets and is wildly inconsistent is "better" in their mind.

If Barker thinks Patrick is better, he's got issues that only a psychologist could work out. And anyway my post was really speaking towards barker having to sit behind ice next year. Yes, I'd transfer. I gotta run, trying to get these youngsters built for battle. You and Brian pump. I'll give ya this At least you're pumping for my team. I'd hate to speak to Brian if he were a Louisville fan.

I do not know why I even argue with you. You bloviate so much about your vast knowledge and then are destroyed by posters with facts.

So to surmise you do not know why the play call that YOU decided to mention was called and your comment is just your opinion. I'm fine with that, but stop shouting down other people's opinions.

And you cannot give a good reason for Drew to transfer when his playing time somewhere else would be, at best, equal to staying here. I guess if he had whiny ass attitude he would consider it.

How am I on a PT bandwagon? I have simply suggested that no football coach will replace their starter, with even mediocre results (wasn't like he missed every pass), during the last two games with a freshman with zero experience. Games were too tight for experimentation.

I think we should see Drew in the first half this week. And as I have said multiple times, if Drew is better or equal, I go with the young guy.

You need to stop trouncing on every one else thinking you know more than they do and stop throwing out your opinions and defending them as fact.

How many times can you call others opinion nonsense, and they do not understand, they have on blinders, and everyone is politically correct. How about you turn 30 first and then bash the rest of us?

For now, just stick with disrespecting Cliff Hawkins (a player you never watched).

I turn 30 in November. Stop sounding like my father.

Brian buddy you're just a good ole pumper. Nothing really wrong with that, but you argue too much to be one. Just pump baby.

In this sport, I'd run circles around you, and I'm sure already have. You don't have like it.

But gotta run I'll respond to your propaganda later. Btw, tell us again what paper your wrote for? Was it a magazine? Isn't that your "sporting accomplishment". You're a desk jock dude. Quit calling people out for things you do routinely. Stop being your hypocritical self. We both know you've never played college ball, and we both know you've never coached. Yea, I can point that out while you come with tons and tons of "desk jock" opinions. 8th grade football was a loot time ago. Back to the typewriter for you.

We uk fans have a particular bad case of this...

Most of us arent saying that at all. Most agree Barker just isnt ready from a maturity standpoint. Towles is our best option, but he needs to play much better.

I do think we missed a big opportunity to give Barker some snaps in the ULL game. He needs some run in the EKU game just so he can see the field in a non-crucial situation.

At UK we run the ball on 2nd and long because our staff has no faith in the QB. Please, allow that to sink in. We run the ball often on 2nd and long, in the toughest defensive conference in history.

It was evident to me in the SC the staff didnt trust Towles. SC flew up field on run blitzes the entire 2nd half, and we still cant/wont throw the ball. The staff knows he isnt seeing the field and not making his progressions. Im sure it terrifies them to put the ball in his hands at times.

it usually means the coach doesn't trust his qb to make important throws.

A scary thought to all of this......Stoops et al have been watching Towles and Barker practice/play for yrs and they consistently choose Towles. 2 different OC's have chosen Towles. It's looking more and more that the staff trusts Towles moreso than Barker. Even with Towles Jekyll/Hyde ways, they keep choosing Towles.

It's possible that they are making wrong decisions. It is more likely, however, that Towles is the better play for right now.

Now, it's no secret that I think the biggest problem with the offense extends well past the QB position. I don't point to Towles only.....I think it's been a collective effort of stink......but acknowledge that Towles just may be the best option we have for right now.

Agree on the support, but don't think they are playing for your enjoyment.
They're playing because they love the game. I probably could have worded that differently. The point is that it's a game played by kids/adults that I enjoy watching.

Auburn just benched their disaster of a QB in favor of redshirt freshman Sean White who was ranked one spot ahead of Barker in Rivals 2015 pro-style QB rankings. Hopefully Auburn will continue to struggle at least until after our game or heads will explode around here.

He's a terrible fit for an "Air Raid" type offense. He struggles the most with shorter passes - particularly crosses and slants - as he cannot judge the proper amount of distance to lead a receiver. Other times he steps into a throw but gets under the ball and it sails on him. I've got to believe that it affects play calling.

Just a personal pet peeve, I wish our fans would stop using the "Air Raid" term to describe our offense, it's like our heads are stuck in the 90s, no other fan base still uses that term.

When we first used it for the Mumme/Couch 90s offenses it was because back in those days it was something new and different. But since then the spread principles have taken over college football and nearly everyone now incorporates some form of what used to be called air raid. There's really nothing different about our offense today at all. Stoops teams don't pass any more than the typical team today.

You only had ONE sentence in your entire post that was accurate. "The SEC is the toughest defensive conference in history". We all knew that. lol

Fair enough. Towles is a terrible fit for any offense besides the Oakland Raiders of the 1970s. That make you feel better?

^It's all semantics. Like the word "fit". Towles skill set is a fantastic "fit" for any offense anywhere. But his inconsistency would interfere with any offense.

I haven't seen anyone say the backup can do no wrong . I have seen people say they would like to see what the backup can do .
