June is camp season, and camp season is all about coaches checking out prospects of interest and deciding who to prioritize in the weeks, months, and even years ahead.
Everyone who signs up gets to work out, but not everyone who works out arrives with the same intrigue.
Class of 2023 quarterback
Reese Mooney
of Denham Springs, La., is one of the players who will camp at Kentucky this summer, and he's on the high end of the intrigue ladder. The 6'1, 190-pound quarterback already has nearly two dozen offers to his credit.
Miami, Nebraska, Cincinnati, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Houston, Maryland, Ole Miss, Syracuse, West Virginia, and many other schools from the Group of Five level.
Kentucky offered Mooney when Eddie Gran and Darin Hinshaw were running the offense, but first-year offensive coordinator Liam Coen will want to see Mooney throw in person before rendering a final judgment on him from Kentucky's current perspective.
"I talked to (Coen) last week," Mooney told Cats Illustrated early this week. "He is just ready and wanting me to visit. He went over the way he runs his offense and stuff like that."
That conversation went well and is one major reason Mooney is excited about the opportunity to camp at UK.
"I loved chatting with him," Mooney said. "He knows the game for sure. He likes to throw it around also, which is good. He was in the NFL. I've never been to Kentucky yet so I'm excited to check it out."
Mooney would love to get a favorable evaluation from Kentucky but he's not resting on his laurels and also plans to visit Louisville, Vanderbilt, Baylor, Georgia, TCU, Nebraska, Mississippi State, Illinois, Miami, UCF, LSU, Tulane, and FAU this summer.
In only four starts during the 2020 season, with a young team around him, Mooney passed for 980 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Although Mooney won't have to make a decision any time soon he told Cats Illustrated that the biggest factors in his choice will ultimately be academics, facilities, fan support, the fit within the offense, and a bond with the coaching staff.
