Pope post game

He should’ve answered this one honestly and said what was true….Otega sucked ass tonight and didn’t bring the necessary effort. Yes he was on the bad end of some terrible foul calls but he also was self destructive. Getting the ball taken from him by Philon and then half ass chasing him only to watch Philon dunk on the other end is just one example. Truth is that Oweh just sucked tonight.

He was also selfish. And he's been doing this for awhile now, driving into sometimes three defenders and not making any effort to distribute the ball. For whatever reason he's not buying into the whole team concept. And he needs to lose the attitude.

I hate when coaches won't blame the officials. We sucked tonight, but sometimes you have to call crap out. Take the fine. Its not like he's not making money.
I think you can only really do something like that if you didn't suck and played well enough to win, if you're planning on not getting ridiculed by the media.

Mr. Pope, sorry if being asks a good question you take that as being baited. Even Cal could come up with a reply better then that.

IMO he should have said that the situation was being addressed. Everyone knows there is a problem.

Well, he could have said the officials were bad....OR.....he could have said Oweh played an absolutely awful game.

He knew that and wouldnt be baited in either direction....Oweh knows Alabama isnt a good defensive team. Just as he knows he put himself in a bad position all night long.
He will adjust or he wont. Could see his time cut back if Butler comes back with Perry and Chandler giving him a rest.

I actually agree. Implying it is due to officials is not what I prefer to hear from my coach. I think some of the calls were very bad but Oweh had some ridiculously stupid fouls that are on him. Pope doesn’t control what the officials call — he controls what his players do that can result in fouls. Enabling a player’s bad decision-making by implying it is on the officials doesn’t really correct the behavior and results in a self-fulfilling prophecy, all the while creating antagonistic hostility with the stripes that only exacerbates the very issue to start with.

What’s he supposed to do chase him down and foul again?

It was a dumb question.

This isn't rocket science. What Alabama did to take Oweh out of the game was to not have to worry about Butler or Robinson.

When you don't have to worry about either of those two you can focus pretty much all your guard defense on Otega Oweh and that has an effect.

Pope didn't want to go into that because it would be kind of a weanie thing to say that would seem like Pope was trying to take credit away from Oats and Alabama.

Pope manned up. It's a shame people are raking him over the coals for it. But it says lots about them and nothing about him.

Nah, was still an easy question and could be answered without being a weenie. Example, “they did a good job of providing help on drives and were able to key in on his paint scoring by walling up on the interior.”

Sure and act like there wasn't an obvious reason why they did such a good job of providing help on drives and were able to key in on his paint scoring by walking up on the interior. I guess that would have been a valid answer but I like Pope's answer better because it was more manly. That was definitely a dumb question.

Implying your player got screwed by the refs isn’t manly in my view, even if there were bad calls against Oweh. I’m a 100% Pope guy but if that was any other coach who did that I wouldn’t approve of it. Oweh played bad, had some egregious fouls that there was no good reason for. Did you think Hurley’s officiating meltdowns were manly and awesome this year?

He let him go bc he already had 4 fouls and a chase down frustration swipe w 10 minutes left would have been a dumb way to pick up the 5th.

It was a frustrating turnover but not picking up the 5th was the right decision. It’s dirt play out that way but theoretically you give up the 2 points to have your best defender and penetrator on the floor the final 10

Man I totally disagree , you might not come close to fouling but you don’t half ass job back .. I’d rather he knocked the guy 6 rows up .

If a coach publicly bashes an official, he will be fined, he will also get reprimanded by UK for embarrassing the University, and he then will be targeted by every official in the SEC games and the NCAA Tournament. It would be extremely foolish if Pope were to do this and he is very aware that he should not. The dollar fine has little if any influense why Coach Pope does not bash the officials. We are not the only team on Saturday that got a horrible whistle. I watched parts of a couple of other SEC games and the officiating was off the chart bad and the visiting teams were hosed. If a visiting team wins it seems they will beat 8 guys with 5 players. That is just how it is in the SEC. Sad but true.

It’s also cool how the announcers seem to be contractually obligated to brag on the quality of the officiating crew. Not to mention how many times they call out the bad decisions of players who commit (phantom) fouls.

I dont want to blame coach pope for oweh's performance. He knows alabama had a good scouting report and also the refs were probably giving calls to bama instead of UK.

See, I just don't care for that. That basically ensures a culture of silence. And with that, nothing will EVER get better without accountability
