Um, you are aware the good old USA seized everyone's gold in 1933, right?
FDR.
Just saying, I agree, but it's not like they haven't shown a pattern.
Most aren't aware this is a global pattern of governance for over a thousand years. Conservatives here are aware, but we often forget. Here's a crude but useful summary of it...
Govt formed by the people.
Simple laws and a system of relatively free trade/barter.
They pick leaders based on the opinions of those who know or have done business with them.
Land and land leases are sold to raise money for the new govt.
Those leaders enrich themselves and their families/friends.
Govt itself runs out of money while leaders grow richer.
Govt issues a currency backed by ... the broke, mismanaged govt, but use the collective wealth/value/gdp of the people to give it value.
More and more laws are added that don't deter the criminals nor protect the people from the leaders stealing from them, but protect the leaders from facing accountability, while allowing the govt to confiscate more property.
Money and land are confiscated and resold/reused.
Instead of keeping the currency issue at the same gross amount/value, they print more as the population grows.
Inflation is built into the system at this point.
Govt misuses money to fund pet projects and wars, and enrich the leaders as their family even further, creating an income tax to put money back into the ponzi scheme and then social services to appear benevolent.
Country appears prosperous until the increased printing of money devalues it substantially, while wages and costs escalate due to expected growth/prosperity based on govt misinformation.
Laws are now so complicated and regulations so burdensome that the people are defenseless against both criminals and govt.
People grow agitated with govt.
Govt fuels/invents/finds a war into which to send a generation of the people (or two) to thin the herd and either renew the ponzi scheme, or the govt collapses or is conquered and new leadership takes over.
In the latter case, new leadership needs money so they confiscate land and resources from the people, and it all starts anew.
The steps can be repeated many times and in different order in different situations, but they are essentially the same everywhere throughout history. It's hard to stop the cycle when half the country or more couldn't care less about their neighbor, and is even worse when less than 20% of the country commits more than half of the crime, yet declares it unfair if they are prosecuted. The 20% that are truly conservative need to step up and return the country to fiscally sound governing, and simplify both the law and the tax code, while seeking over time to eliminate the latter.
