This isn't new, but it is interesting who wrote it. The article is from the NYT in 1975. It discusses how the FBI kept secret lists of communists during the 50s to detain in the case of a "national security" event.

The United States Constitution provides the replacement of a U.S. Congressman. The chief executive of each state is to call for an election to fill the vacancy, per Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution.
As soon as Gaetz quit Governor DeSantis called for a Special Election. Once he called for the special election the Secretary of State set a date, the earliest date provided by state law.
It takes several months to fill the seat because of state requirements around qualifying, overseas ballot deadlines and the need to hold both a primary and general election. The primaries are set for January 28, but whoever wins the GOP nomination will be the new congressman because under Ron DeSantis the Democrat Party is dead in Florida. The earliest date for the General (Special) Election is April 1.
