Healthy debate is more about challenging your own beliefs against someone else of equal or higher intelligence. When two people genuinely want to understand the reasons why the other disagrees, and wants to make sure they are correct in their own assessments, you can actually have productive conversation in which both people learn and grow. Unfortunately this is rare. One of the biggest reasons it's particularly rare in politics is because of the utter disdain both sides have for one another. If you don't respect your opposition, you will place no value in what they say, thus negating any chance of reaching common ground. This is one reason why it's so destructive to assign some egregious label to your opposition. If you truly believe they are what you call them, then there's no way you can respect them. Likewise, a person will lose all respect for someone who assigns them said label.I don't know about that.
But I think what you are getting at is more ego and arrogance, digging in your heels to be right not proven wrong.
Dunning is a little different where the over confidence comes from perpetual reinforcement of wrong" views due to never entertaining the fact that they themselves might be wrong.

So I'm guessing since shootings were trumps fault Bernie and MSNBC took full responsibility for Steve Scalise getting shot and the squad took responsibility for the ICE shootout, right? Oh
