Moving to a satellite system.

Any issues with either of these overall, and more importantly do both get all the UK games?

Thanks in advance,

BP

DTV hands down.

DirecTV and it's not even close. You'll get every UK game and you also get ESPN3/watchESPN to watch games online. Direct is very user-friendly. Best remote and DVR I've ever had. You can navigate at lightning speed. Make sure to get the Genie DVR. You can record 5 things at once and you'll never even begin to use up all your recording space.

As long as you get ESPN, ESPN2, SEC Network, and the locals you'll get every single Kentucky TV game. You'll have to use WatchESPN for the SEC Network+ games.

I will say for a fact that once the initial 1-year sweet deal offer each gives you, Dish is cheaper when the regular prices start coming in after a year. You get access to all the WatchESPN stuff with Dish as well. I don't have a DVR so I can't vouch for any of the DVR stuff but The Hopper DVR sounds pretty neat.

I do know that with the Dish tuners/DVRs that one can be connected to two TVs so it acts like really two tuners. Saves you money every month on tuner rental fees by only having to pay for one instead of two. That would also mean only one DVR fee for two TVs and only one HD fee for two TVs. That has to be at least $15-20 a month savings.

I always switch between the two every two years (when the contracts run out and the prices sky rocket). Right now I'm on Dish... got about a year left in the contract then I'll switch back to DirecTV. Both are very similar and you'll get every UK game with either as boston pointed out. I honestly don't have a preference as they are both very similar in terms of quality and offer similar packages/pricing. If you do consider Dish, let me know--I need two more referrals to get a free XBOX One, and we'll both save $50 if you do it. /end shameless referral plug. :)

I had Dish for 14 years, was in Sam's and they had a DTV special going so I jumped to Direct. I will never return to Dish, better picture more sports all around better service. I'm hooked on Direct.

I got the wireless Genies. Not sure I would do that again. The wireless bridge drops connectivity quite often. Having the flexibility to move the receiver outside and watch a big game makes it worth it tho. Their guide is absolutely the best I've used and the new small remotes are great too. The main thing that puts them ahead is NFL Sunday Ticket, if you watch much football. Its pretty expensive tho.

I've had both. Honestly, the only difference to me is DirectTV has Sunday Ticket if you're a big NFL fan. Other than that, Dish has been cheaper for me over all and never had any service or quality issues.

Brian, I have Dish. I'm not going to tell you its best or worst. I'm sure not looking to switch. From the posts I've see thus far, I can do all that with Dish. It really depends on what your goals and viewing habits are. Let me just suggest some stuff to consider.
  • You need to consider where you are going to put your dish and its visibility to the sky where the services Sats sit. Generally that's to the SW.

  • Study the hardware VERY carefully. With my set up, I can record as few as 6 channels or as many as 9. I have two hoppers.

  • Some hardware offers an integrated Netflix.

  • If you have existing coax, will it need replacement. Is it in the right type (RG60)?

  • What additional services do you get if the Sat system is also internet connected? Do you have sufficient bandwidth to benefit from those services?

  • How many TVs do you have and how many are watching a different channel at once?

  • What program packages does the provider offer? That is what will determine whether you will actually get a lot of the games. I rarely miss a game but I have their highest level of programming. Nice, but it ain't cheap.

  • What's their exit penalty? Say you don't like it, what does it cost to drop it? Some contracts may be involved.

  • Do you need mobile equipment for camping, etc? You might be able to leverage your service to do that too.
Tough choices. Good luck with it. I don't think you can go far wrong either way you go.

Not to mention Dish is likely to be bought out or they may actually buy T Mobile. Lot of uncertainty with Dish. And now that AT&T owns DirecTV, you will be able to watch Directv on the AT&T Network on all of your devices. Dish can't offer that, which is why they may end up buying or being bought by a Telco.

I had Dish before I moved to Korea. I was very glad to get rid of that mess. I have Direct now but I have a minimal package. My bill is I think 46 dollars a month. I had the game last night on ESPN. (I didn't have the last game on I think espnu.) That was cool BUT, I can pull Bill like a switch blade so I don't worry much.....

Interesting to know.

I had direct tv first but every time it would start to rain the picture would go out and after the first year was up the price kept going up, they didn't have the genie when I had it either, I have dish now I have the same package and a DVR, the picture never goes out unless it is absolutely pouring the rain and they have free channel previews monthly, so I guess I'm a dish guy but it has a lot to do with the viewing experience I had when I had direct, good luck Brian[thumb2]

There's really no comparison.

DirecTV.

When your bill goes up for Directv, just call them and complain. You have a little less leverage after year 1, because you still have another year on the contract, but you just have to tell them that you will be shopping and will have to pull the plug.

They have all sorts of credits available that will keep your bill reasonable year 2. They will also usually throw the Sunday Ticket in again (for year 2) if you ask politely.

Patience is a virtue.

Love DirecTV. Have had it since 2000, but I do have problems with the picture going out during storms.

I've had DTV for eight years. Dish isn't any better in the rain than DTV. All Satellite goes out for a few minutes here and there every year, but studies show that it still has less outages than cable.....and it never has extended downtime - only briefly when the worst of a storm is over you.

I disagree with most. Just switched to dish from direct after being with direct for a long time. Had the genie and it was slow and laggy as hell. My dish hopper is fast and smooth. Comes built in with apps like Netflix. 2 year price lock. Couldn't be happier. I get all the UK games.

DTV was the best when it worked but mine went out whenever there was thunder. Didn't even have to be raining. I have ATT Uverse now. Much cheaper. Bill is constant, my DTV was always wrong or changing. DVR isn't as good but at least I don't have to worry about it going out.

Same here. Had Direct TV and every time it rain no picture. That was years ago and I have Dish. Better price.

Hey, I think I'm going to be switching g to Dish. They seem cheaper than Direct, especially after the 1st year. I use ya as a referral if you want. What do I need to do to use you?

I've had Dish for years and no complaints whatsoever. Won't say I'll be a Dish customer till I die but, they've given me no reason to change. I can however say that I'll never have cable EVER again.

Same here. Only complaint I have is when ti goes out with bad weather (which hell even happened sometimes on Comcast) and they don't support FXnow.

So every two years you have one satellite ripped off of your roof and another one put on?

It's on the side of the house, but yeah pretty much. Saves a lot of money. You can always try to call Dish/DirecTV and haggle/threaten to switch after the initial two year contract and they might lower your bill a little too.

If you have DirecTV and you lose picture every time it rains, your dish is not tuned to its best ability. Some installers are lazy and only tune it til they get a picture. I have had good and bad installers. The best will adjust the dish tonits optimum signal and you will rarely lose service.

I`ve had both and the deal breaker with me was the customer service. At least with Dish I can understand the person on the other end. I also had a problem when I had a complete A-Hole for Direct come out and do some work for me. Dude more or less said I was lying about something. You don`t do that in a mans living room. At least not to me. The next time I needed their service I told Direct do not sendJack Ass back to my house. Well guess what, They did and that was that as they say. Dish for me.

Cool. I've got DirecTV, Time Warner for phone and Internet and Verizon for cell phone. I may call AT&T and ask them what kind of bundle price they'd give me if went 100% AT&T and bundled all 4.

That's strange. I've had DirecTV for eight years, probably called them 20 times and never once spoke to anyone that wasn't 100% American. Most of the time it's a female from the Southeast. Also never had anybody to my house that wasn't professional.

Not true. Had them out (had to argue with them to get them to do that) and they said everything was fine. Still went out every time I heard thunder, rain or not.

I have no reason to lie to you Ice Cold . I`m not selling either one.

Direct TV is the only way to go Poe. Yes you'll get all the UK games. SEC network is channel 611. I've had it for a long time and absolutely love it. And I gotta have my NFL Sunday Ticket and MLB extra innings and DTV is the only service who offers those packages. If you get a big package and the sports packages it'll be a little expensive but definitely worth it. And if a friend gives you their account number you'll both get 10 buck off a month for 10 months. And I think you can get more than one discount with different account numbers. Go with DTV.
