OT DirecTV or Dish

I have no reason to lie to you Ice Cold . I`m not selling either one.

Who said you were lying? You gave your experience and I gave mine. Just called them a minute ago for the heck of it and a 100% American answered. Maybe different regions route the calls differently.

One other thing. I've only been to one restaurant/bar that had Dish and the picture was terrible. I asked if they had DTV and they said, no, we have Dish unfortunately. That's exaclty what the bartender said. I've been to dozens and dozens.... heck hundreds of bars and restaurants that had DTV and I always know they have DTV because of the picture quality.

I've had both multiple times... picture quality is nearly identical (and I'm a videophile). Perhaps that one bar was viewing a channel in SD instead of HD?

I have to disagree on the picture quality as I've been to a friends house as well. But you probably know more about it than I do as you've just claimed, so I'll beg off. Good luck, OP. Sounds like you have a lot of info.

It could have been one of them Asians throwing their voice. They can do that you know. Sometimes it`s hard to tell.

That would be great. You can use one of these referral codes:

EML748603336
VCD0014993964
VCD0014993972
VCD0014993989

http://www.dish.com/referral-program/

So, if I sign up through phone, would I just give the code to the representative? Also, Is this something I do after I sign up or before? I think I'm going to sign up by calling a customer rep instead of doing it online. I want to make sure you get credit for the referral though. Tell me what to do so I can make sure you get credit. Might as well help a BBN brother out if I'm signing up for it anyway.

Still thinking about either Direct or Dish but prolly going with Dish cause it's cheaper.

I disagree with most. Just switched to dish from direct after being with direct for a long time. Had the genie and it was slow and laggy as hell. My dish hopper is fast and smooth. Comes built in with apps like Netflix. 2 year price lock. Couldn't be happier. I get all the UK games.

What about picture quality? That's big to me and I've heard Direct is better. Is that true or not, in your opinion of course?

I had direct tv first but every time it would start to rain the picture would go out and after the first year was up the price kept going up, they didn't have the genie when I had it either, I have dish now I have the same package and a DVR, the picture never goes out unless it is absolutely pouring the rain and they have free channel previews monthly, so I guess I'm a dish guy but it has a lot to do with the viewing experience I had when I had direct, good luck Brian[thumb2]

How would you compare picture quality? Some are saying that Direct is better for high Def stuff. Would you agree with that?

Yeah if you call to order it, just give one of those referral codes while signing up. You have to give one of those numbers during the sign-up process--if you try to do it after signing up then it's too late. If you do go with Dish, thanks in advance!

Directv sent a murderer to do my install several years ago but I'm still a directv customer. Unless the hopper has changed for Dish, the record 6 channels at once is bs. You only have control over 2 of them, the other 4 are the networks that it automatically records.

Moving to a satellite system.

Any issues with either of these overall, and more importantly do both get all the UK games?

Thanks in advance,

BP

Let me just say this. I signed up for a special DIRECTV deal and was told my bill would be such and such. It wasn't. it was quite a bit more and my complaints fell on deaf ears. Let the buyer beware.

I will say DTV has more channels in True HD (1080p) vs 720p. Those two resolutions are definitely noticeable.

If you're talking about true 1080p, as far as I'm aware both DirecTV and Dish only offer 1080p for their CINEMA / PPV movie channels. Regular network channels are either 720p or 1080i, and both companies offer those channels at their original resolutions. Of course you can set the receivers to upscale all the channels to 1080p if you'd like, but that's not the true resolution of nearly all channels on satellite.

As long as you get ESPN, ESPN2, SEC Network, and the locals you'll get every single Kentucky TV game. You'll have to use WatchESPN for the SEC Network+ games.

I will say for a fact that once the initial 1-year sweet deal offer each gives you, Dish is cheaper when the regular prices start coming in after a year. You get access to all the WatchESPN stuff with Dish as well. I don't have a DVR so I can't vouch for any of the DVR stuff but The Hopper DVR sounds pretty neat.

I do know that with the Dish tuners/DVRs that one can be connected to two TVs so it acts like really two tuners. Saves you money every month on tuner rental fees by only having to pay for one instead of two. That would also mean only one DVR fee for two TVs and only one HD fee for two TVs. That has to be at least $15-20 a month savings.

Signals get compressed with Dish more than Direct, even more when you're trying to run 2 tuners from one box. I've had both, but the picture quality on Direct is better basically because the picture isn't compressed like it is on Dish.

I've had Dish for about 10 years & had no real complaints other than the blackouts during negotiations. I realize this happens to Direct as well as cable companies, but Dish does seem to have more than their share. I have the hopper system + wireless joey system. Haven't had any problems, but do have rain fade. The only reason that I would switch is if Direct had a better hd picture.......something that I could really tell the difference

I have had both. Currently I have Dish. For some reason, Dish is the only satellite company that offers local channels in BG. I can't honestly see any difference between the pictures for either provider. UK coverage is the same between the two systems.

Other than the local channels, the big advantage that Dish has for me is that the current DVR's have a Sling Box built-in. That means if your receiver is connected to your home network, you can access your tv from a tablet, ipad, laptop or smartphone from anywhere in the US that has wifi access. That include not only live tv, but also your recordings too. I was able to watch a UK game last year while on vacation in Florida by hooking my smartphone up to the TV. It also has Netflix built-in so it's not necessary to have a separate device to access it.

Not necessarily true. As I stated earlier, Dish compresses much of their video, which is why Directv has a better picture currently. I also believe Directv has more satellites in the sky, making them not have to compress as much and giving a more reliable signal. That is, of course, if you had the install done properly.

If you want to get technical the BEST site on the net is DBSTalk.com. They have experts for all technologies. That's where I'd start after you read all these comments.

All digital video is compressed. Depending on the compression CODEC would determine the amount of compression used. Some CODECs have higher or lower bitrates than the others resulting in better transmission methods with minimal packet loss. Not to get too geeky here tho.

Billionth, we decided to go with Direct. They beat Dish prices, which I didn't expect. Had I gone with Dish, I definitely would have used your referral. I will keep this thread in mind, my family is constantly switching back and forth from provider to provider. So, I'll all but guarantee that I use that referral before too long. Sorry I decided on direct, it was just a money thang. Hit me up on XBOX One is you get it. Gamertag UKCAT5FAN.

Let us know your experience with DTV. I think you'll love it. I know you'll love the small remote and how well it works.

Brian, I've had both. I've actually had both multiple times.

Without a lot of breakdown, dish sucks. You're crazy if you pick dish over direct.

Won't be beating Dish's prices when that one year special offer is over. I warned you about it...
