No, I think YOU should be nervous Dukie V

Did he mention the decades-long UNC scandal?

Dickie V do you think Tarheel National with all of that Cheating going on for 20+ years under Smith and the rest of coaches after him should be really worry what The NCAA will or should take away from them?

I hope all the players on both teams are eligible and healthy. I want the best matchup possible and think this game will certainly deliver. In a perfect world, neither fanbase will have an excuse when the final buzzer sounds.

Mark, you are a good poster. While I look forward to slamming some good stuff down your throat, you are a good guy.

After the season starts please don't expect me to be nice. Understand? [winking]

Okay so I looked at Dickie V's Twitter and the source he is using is an article from NBC sports back in mid April. That article is old and as I mentioned he knows nothing on the inside and is just using info provided from the media. Also he mentioned that the only reason he brought up skal is because UK had a bad deal with Enes.
I don't know why anyone would compare Skal to Enis the situations are entirely different.

I saw this thread and was worried. Then I actually read his tweets exactly as they were stated and it's nothing to see here, please disperse.

I don't think anyone knows exactly what took place, but I just can't see the NCAA penalizing Skal with a whole season. There COULD be enough there that he's gotta sit out a few games. However, why don't people understand this is nothing like the Kanter situation? The Kanter situation wasn't subjective when it came to WHAT the wrongdoing was. The subjective part was how they treated that money changing hands.

Furthermore, the Kanter ruling, now that we know all the facts, was NOT a screw job to UK. Where many fans get frustrated is, there have been other foreign players in similar circumstances who broke the same rules, but played college ball. The determining factor in the Kanter situation was HOW MUCH money was taken, not that a rule was broken. Plenty of players break the rules. Festus Ezeil broke the rules at Vandy, he was suspended a few games. John Wall broke the rules in high school, he sat out a few games. These weren't as severe because the amount wasn't considered enough to warrant it.

I wish the NCAA would put the rules in context. Make it a dollar figure and pre-determine the punishment. If you receive more than "x amount", you're ineligible. Anything under, you're suspended for this many games. Instead, they take every case by itself and this means they have no governing document to check and balance their rulings.

You should look over that case again. It was a massive screw job. Kanter's father meticulously kept records of everything the family was reimbursed for from the pro team he played for. His dad did everything he could to maintain his sons eligibility, but he made a mistake. You are absolutely right that it was about the amount of money. But do you remember how much of that money was used? Not one single cent of it. They offered to pay it back in full, it was untouched, it would have been no problem. The NCAA chose to view it as a black and white matter, when it was clearly a grey area.

But does the money being spent or not really matter? Say a recruit gets a car as compensation. Is it not a violation if he gives the car back? I was not aware they hadn't touched the money, but I believe the amount of money was $33,000(?) and deemed to be excessive. Thus, the ruling of ineligible.

My point was, receiving payment as a professional should be strictly defined by the NCAA. If you're an international player competing before you're 18, it should be distinctly publicized what the amount it. Same with a normal recruit. Obviously every recruit taking $50 shouldn't mean they are ineligible, but the amounts should be defined.

Player A can receive $900 in the form of plane tickets and hotel comps...suspended 3 games.
Player B can receive $1200 cash...suspended 5 games.
Player C can receive $33000 in compensation...ineligible.

That's the frustrating part. And because of the subjectivity, any time a UK recruit even has a sniff of a rumor about taking even a free pizza and soda, I'm concerned, because the NCAA could drop the hammer (or completely ignore things, like UNC) at their own will and there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it. For a recruit, by time any legal action would be completed, their Freshman season would be over with anyway.

Say he's ineligible, someone like Skal could sue the NCAA and even if he won, he'd never suit up for UK anyway.

Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but I thought the Enes situation had more to do with how the money was paid to the Kanters........maybe it should have gone directly to the school?

Actually, according the NCAA, a rule was broken. The rule was that Kanter could ONLY receive certain expenses and not a penny more. Emmert said that the amount of money was not relevant. IF Kanter had received one dollar over the amount that was allowed, he would not be eligible.

JPScott has compared the Kanter situation to other foreign players in numerous posts and determined that Kanter was not treated with consistency.

From JPS: The NCAA revealed in its declaration of Kanter's ineligibility that the amount in question is $33,033. According to a source close to the process, about $20,000 of that money was used by the Kanter family to pay for Kanter' educational expenses - such as schooling and tutors - with the remainder still sitting in an account unused. The NCAA told the family that Fenerbahce would have needed to pay for those expenses directly for them to be permissible.

You are not quite right. You are forgetting what the money was for. The team didn't hand him $33,000 and say "go ball out Enes. Car, clothes, hoes, whatever" It was an educational stipend. It was given to the Kanter family to pay for his private school in the US. They didn't use it. So it's actually quite a bit different than accepting a car or a gift.

1. Ignore Kansas provable infractions the last few years - check
2. Ignore UNC's well-documented infractions - check
3. Maximize the potential for Kentucky's non-issues becoming issues - check

The man is scum. Why he would seemingly hope for Skal to be ineligible is beyond me.

Chrome Dome is euphoric right now after Duke won #5 and he knows if Skal is deemed eligible UK will have a great shot at #9.

Nothing to see here people except haters hating.

Only Colin Cowherd afaik. Perhaps not so coincidentally he no longer works for ESPN.

Cowerd, Simmons and Olbermann are no longer getting paid by ESPN because of the only thing that matters to ESPN, money.

Disney chairman Bob Iger said yesterday that there were more cable subscription losses in this business than analysts expected. This sports business makes up nearly 50% of Disney revenues. Money talks and media stars (cough) walked.

Its probably more likely that Cowherd knew he was on his way out and therefore had more freedom to talk about whatever he wanted than it is that he was not retained for anything he said. Either way I don't think it's a coincidence that the only person at ESPN who displayed a strong opinion on the UNC scandal is no longer at ESPN.

Talking about Kanter...what really ticked me off is that he originally committed to Washington in 2009, and there didn't seem to be a problem there. But when he de committed in 2010 and decided to come to UK....it all went south. Mark Emmert was President at the University of Washington until October 2010. He took over as NCAA president in November and Kanter was ruled ineligible in January 2011.

Adding in a few other factors...Terrence Jones de committing from UW, Emmert admitting they target certain school so/individuals and the NCAA's ridiculous inconsistencies....I have to think the ruling was a personal grudge...at least to an extent. Alex Len was paid for playing club ball, it wasn't even for schooling and all he got was a 10 game suspension.

Just my opinion

I agree. Until he plays that first game, I will be nervous too, given the NCAA's history of sticking it to UK. However, I am pretty optimistic, since Cal is. Sandy Bell is pretty diligent, and they hired two ex-NCAA compliance people to work under her. I am sure they did a lot of investigation on Skal, and would not have taken his commitment if there had been any doubts.

People tend to forget/ignore stuff like this, evidently cheating at UNC can go on forever but a basketball to mark Cal's 50th win must be dealt with swiftly. The NCAA has a double or triple standard, one for Duke and UNC, one for UK and one for most other college programs. As long as Emmert is there that is likely to be the case.

We also have a Senior captain in Amile Jefferson, who completely shut down Frank Kaminsky in the title game. Considering Kaminsky was the NPOY and gave pretty much every team fits, I think other teams would be well advised not to overlook Jefferson's influence on the defensive end.

Dude, Frank had 21 pts and 12 reb....he's the only reason Wisc was in the game. WTF are you talking about?

This is nothing like Kanter, who actually earned a large sum of money playing professional basketball overseas. It wasn't the fact that he took money, it was the amount of money he was paid that was the problem, despite his willingness to give it all back.

No one is saying Skal took money, right now they are accusing his handler for asking for money. At worst, he's found to have accepted something and has to sit out some games...same thing happened to Selby, Wall, and others.

Bingo. As much as he praises Duke, and as a Duke fan I will not deny that at all, very little is ever made about how he goes on and on and on about Roy Williams and UNC.
Hi Mark. I love THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL. Plus I love Dickie V love for college BB, HAVE A BLESSED DAY my friend. SMILE

!!!!!!!!!!!! GO ROY & STAFF !!!!!!!!!!!!

The NCAA does not have it out for UK. The Kanter ruling was BS, but other than that we have been given a lot of leeway. Remember Tarkanian's line "The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky they just gave Cleveland State two more years of probation"???? The Herald Leader did a story quoting several ex players, all of whom admitted to receiving free meals and stuff from boosters while at UK. The NCAA gave us a slap on the wrist. It wasn't until the Emery thing where there was physical proof (although many say it was planted) that they decided to come down on us. They could have given us the death penalty. Many suggested they should. We got two years of probation, vacated TWO victories, and within four years we were back in the Final Four.

Please stop with the "NCAA hates Kentucky" stuff.

The NCAA in 1988 is NOT the same NCAA we have in 2015. There is really little comparison.

Dickie V says on Twitter that we should be nervous about Skal's eligibility.

I won't claim to know anything about Skal's situation since I don't, but don't take Dickie V seriously. Perhaps he was once a decent guy back around the 80s or so to have on during broadcasts, but he's just an insufferable bald idiot these days. If ESPN were smart, they'd limit his broadcasts to Jimmy V week (he does a nice job bringing awareness to this cause) and give him 5 minutes a week on SportsCenter during college basketball season.

Just how long will all presidents of D1 programs put up with the NCAA & Emmert double standard?

Why do you post this nonsense on every board? If you're not trying to come across as a lunatic, you're doing a terrible job.

I'd compare Dickie V at this point to Lee Corso. An old shtick that needs to be gently pushed aside.
