Nick Saban Retiring?

Whoever they get Alabama going drop atleast one notch for what... A season?

Or could the 80s-90s Alabama come back?
Saban coached at such a high level, it's going to be virtually impossible for the next coach to match that. An .875 winning percentage is just insane. It's more likely than not that they will take a step back.

As for the 80's/90's, they have to make the right hire, or they could be chasing coaches every few years to find the right guy. When they hired guys like Dubose, Franchione, Price and Shula, those guys weren't top 5-10 coaches in the game. I think they steer clear of that and get a current top 5 coach.

Another thing to think about is Saban's staff. Where are they going?

I wonder if keeping some of them on will be part of the deal. I would assume Saban has some sort of role in finding the next guy and for the sake of continuity will highly suggest retaining some staff as part of the deal.

He always had impressive staffs full of guys with impressive football pedigrees/resumes.

Will be interesting to see what Reese does, you figure he was on an HC path, might need another year or two as OC but I'd be real interested to see where he ends up.

Also, their WR coach who was also AHC who is probably the "next" Saban assistant to get some looks.

Oh gosh I hope that happens, having a former coach dictate staff moves to the new coach is 100% plan for a disastrous failure

So if Harbaugh leaves as expected for the NFL, and Jimbo doesn't land another job....are the only active head coaches with CFB national titles in 2024 Kirby, Dabo, and Mac Brown (who should retire)?

Guy who should be happiest in all the countries? probably should be Ryan Day. Not 1 but 2 coaches way better than him leading teams he wouldn't beat for a CFB natl title will be gone in 2024. Again, assuming Harbaugh is gonzo.

Lanning took his name out of the running.

I think it's largely going to be between Kiffin and Sarkisian with Dabo as the 3rd wheel. I'm guessing Sarkisian is less likely to leave and it winds up being Kiffin.

That would be great. All that nil money spent for someone who left lol.

Could help tame the nil insanity, but I doubt it

Lanning is very smart. He's 37 yrs old, he can afford to continue at a school all-in on winning to keep bilding his rep. and let someone else go to Bama now and likely fail. Then in 3 or 4 yrs he can demand anything and everything when Bama makes him A#1 choice and target.

Some local folks on Alabama radio on in the last day think it will be an NFL coach? Because top CFB guys will say no (Kirby, Lanning) and they don't want to "settle" with Kiffin or Norvell.

Agree 100%.

There's a GOOD chance the next coach at Alabama doesn't live up to expectations. That's a ton of pressure and scrutiny to walk into. After THAT guy fails, the next coach will be given more grace.

The job likely opens back up, and he's better set up to succeed.

Time keeps a'rollin....even more than the Tide.

Fantastic college career. A coaching tree that stretches all over. The game has changed, so whether anyone can match what coach Saban has done is debatable. As far as the guy that steps into that chair whoever it is will feel his seat warm on day one. Kiffen? Sarkisian? Sweeny? A Harbaugh?

Thanks for some great football coach. Enjoy life!

Not only will the new coach have to try and replace a legend, but be a top 4, top 5 team, with a roster who knows will stay or not, but in 2024 will play:

at Wisconsin
vs Georgia
at Tennessee
vs Mizzou
at LSU
at Oklahoma
vs Auburn

ouch
