I think Cal wants to win. I just think he cares more about being right, and doing things "his way." He also wants to prove how great he is with every decision.

The freshmen are his success and down fall. He was getting these amazing 5-star freshmen and dominating college basketball. It became a bragging point. "I'm not just beating you, I'm beating you with freshmen. That's how great I am. I don't need Juniors and seniors. I can do it with freshmen."

He also LOVES getting kids to the NBA and helping them create/acquire generational wealth. He feels good about it. I think he thinks it's another feather in his cap. At a point, I thought this stuff was going to help recruiting become this dominant machine. And I think he thought that too. But, it really hasn't. We've had good recruiting, even great most of the time.

But now we're losing. We've been losing for 4 straight years. 1 missed NCAA tournament and 1 NCAA tournament win. So now, bragging about doing it with freshmen looks real dumb. Bragging about changing lives--no one wants to hear that when you lose.

He at one point in an off-season made the comment: The fans want me to win championships, but my mission is bigger than that. Well, that's the problem. Getting kids to be millionaires isn't bigger than the university.

IDK I think the “behind the scenes” is pretty simple and doesn’t need to involve a shadowy conspiracy/Manchurian candidate.

Cal has a galaxy sized ego. When he came to UK he thought he could recruit the best of the best and just win with that. For about 6 years it worked and his ego grew. He could win and get tons of guys to the NBA. He was the trailblazer of OAD and no one else could do it like him.

But then the game continued to change and Cal is getting up there in years. IMO the shelf life of a UK coach is about 10-12 years. Just too demanding to win at that high of a level for longer than that. He’s grown stale and the game has passed him by.

But having a giant ego he’s holding on as long as he can. The $ isn’t bad either.

Pitino learned the hard way the UK fanbase loved UK basketball more than any one coach. He vastly underestimated how UK fans would be toward him regarding the UofL job. I’m sure his ego was bruised that the fanbase that lauded and cheered him now did the opposite and he lashed out. He has said leaving UK was the biggest mistake of his coaching career. Cal may have had an 8-2 record against his UofL teams but no logical person will ever say cal is as good of a coach or motivator that pitino was. Cal’s UMASS days is certainly debatable but somewhere along the way (at Memphis most likely) cal decided Im just getting talent and forgetting about this coaching nonsense. Work smarter not harder which worked for a bit but nothing last forever and adaptation is needed. Cals not adapting!!!!!

Is Cal tanking March on purpose?

As crazy as that sounds, whether it's been the SEC or NCAA tournament, it looks like he deliberately did 0 game planning or adjustments for the other teams. That alone tells me that he is either ridiculously lazy, he doesn't care if we lose, he is trying to lose, or a combination of those things. Either way, in my mind all are grounds for termination.
