Marcus Santos Silva > Haarms

Silva is a below the rim and slightly undersized, from a height standpoint, big. Not sure how that would translate to the SEC.

Man this is crazy that UK has come to this..... I mean we seem so desperate anymore.... I don't want to beat a dead horse and I know I sound like a broken record but we need to change the coaching staff up a bit!
How about we bring Tubby back and sign Bobby Perry, Sheray Thomas, and Lukasz Obrzut?

Looked up Silva stats from last year. Sported a 26pt 22rb (10 offesnive) vs Rhode Island two years ago.

13 games of double digit boards last year.

17 rebounds vs. Dayton last year

I would take both but this guy has over 600 career rebounds. Pretty impressive.

Haarms 445 in 10 more games than Silva.

Per 40 Haarms is 14.9ppg and 8.7rb
Per 40 Silva is 17.4ppg and 13.1rb

Length could be an issue in SEC like it was for Reid...seem like similar builds.

Much rather have Haarms. I think he totally changes how Kentucky plays defense. Can you imagine long, athletic guys able to overplay on the wings because the know if they are beat, the rim is protected five feet out?

You could make teams shoot 12-footers on the move all day.

We are so desperate that Cal has the number one recruiting class coming in again. How desperate can we get? This just sucks.

he cut his list to 3 (UK Texas Tech and BYU) will decide this week!

Yep and that’s exactly what we need. A guy to go get boards, play good defense and be the glue guy.

Haarms is better for what Cal likes to do both offensively and defensively. He can catch lobs and is active away from the ball. He can shoot the jumper. On defense, he is a rim protector. He seems a bit quicker than Santos-Silva and probably would be better switching, though I think both struggle switching screens.

Also Haarms played in the Big Ten and Santos-Silva played in the A-10. Big difference in the level of competition night in and night out. Haarms is probably more than ready to handle SEC competition on a regular basis. Not sure about Santos-Silva.

OP, I'm not picking on you but I am curious. Have you ever watched the VCU kid play a meaningful minute? Or are you making this statement based on stats/measureables? I watched Haarms play in person vs. UT and UVA at the Yum in 2019, but have never watched Santos-Silva play one minute in my life. What makes him a better fit in your opinion?

I do love the idea of a 7 foot 3 guy in the paint. He could not even jump, and he's going to alter opposing offenses in a big way. That, and we'll have overwhelming guard play from our wings who can be great defenders, quality SFs and PFs as well.

It translated pretty good against LSU last year. He had 17 points and 11 rebounds in a 84-82 VCU win. Seems to translate pretty good to me.

Is he? Anyone know his rebounding numbers? We could use Haarms rim protection for sure. At the same time, we need a guy like Silva, a space and glass eater.
Silva's a better rebounder. They're both lefties. Silva prefers to bang inside, doesn't take threes. EVER. Haarms likes to shoot from outside and isn't bad. We would do well with either player, but if Haarms blocks 3 shots a game next year we probably bring home a banner.

It's the fans on message boards that are desperate. Cal and staff know what they are doing

But remember, LSU did not have a kid over 6’6 in their starting lineup. They were a small athletic team last year.

Take them both if u can get them. And to the person above Silva is not a below the rim player. Jeez. Go on ksr and watch the dunk videos in defenders face. Not below the rim.

All good points and I can’t disagree. They both would bring good qualities to the team. We do need a rim protector that’ll be playing starter type minutes. I know Jackson can provide that as well, I just don’t know how many minutes he’ll be getting next season. In that scenario, Haarms is the better fit.

Our opinion doesn't matter as who is the best fit really. The one we get will have to do.

Ya but you’re comparing those stats against Big Ten conference nationally televised games in prime time vs whatever conference Silva is in. Haarms played in an elite eight buzzer beater game against the eventual champ. Big game experience like that is invaluable.
