Lexington restaurant memories: long gone favorite places to eat.

A few stick out to me: The Ground Round (on Southland Dr.) Wing's Tea House (in Gardenside. that one is VERY old school), and Lexitalia (pretty much a given that it was Mafia owned/connected)
Ground Round is a great call. First place you could eat peanuts in the restaurant. Southland Drive was thick with good places back then. IIRC the original Joe Balognas was there, Sir PIzza, Godfathers, Kellys Milk Jug, Szechuan Garden, the original Long John’s Silver when it was actually really good. Hell even Sageser drug store had a mean cherry coke.

It's hard to find places like that anymore.

You all came over to Darryl's because we kept the var open as late as the law allowed.

I would set the over/under on pitchers of Beer I drank after work at Darryl's at somewhere around 775 😅 amazingly I still can remember the guy that was usually bartending. I think his name may have been Charles.

Absolutely. They would bring them out on a pizza platter. It was insane.
If memory serves, it was a large pizza platter. We’d usually have the same waitress every Monday night and she knew to bring out a decent size bowl of bleu cheese.

MNF was a thing at that time, great deals all over town.

Restaurant in the Idle Hour shopping center, Banana's Tavern maybe? Had a killer reuben at one time.

The LimeAde drink at Sageser, with those skinny fries, was always a treat !!
Plus, I remember when Cottrell's Bakery had a Maple-Iced Long Johns (unfilled) for only six (6) cents.
Lastly, it was always a treat to smell the Jumbo Cashews roasting in the nut display inside Woolworth's. I rarely could afford them !! 😎

Was there a Clancy's in Lexington at one time or am I imagining that?

During the early 00s, there was briefly a soul food place on the lower level of South Hill Station. Absolutely amazing. Sadly, like everything else in that spot, it didn't last.

The taco pizza and stuffed crust from Slice of Chicago put 30 pounds at least on me in college.

The spicy beef wrap rightfully got headlines at Ovid's, but I was a chicken divan man, myself.

Yep, Bananas, then turned into O’Neill’s which is still there. Place used to be hopping too. I worked the door there for a while, brother bartended there also.

Someone needs to do a spinoff of best current joints in Lexington by genre, neighborhood, etc.

Clown? Or are you too far North these days to do it.

Did they have a killer reuben or am I mis-remembering.

If that was during the early to mid 80's guarantee we've met. Was a regular stop for a while. Ate at the bar quite a bit so more than likely knew your brother as well. Bartended/waited right down the road at The Cork and Clever (think it's a Columbia's now) and back then a lot of bartenders would visit each other.

This was more mid to late 90’s. Yeah they had a great Ruben and burgers. They kind of overhauled the menu while we were hanging out there so I am not sure if it’s still the same or not now that it’s O’Neils but it was fantastic back in the day.

Jozo's
Slice of Chicago
Stanley J's
Tonio's Super Burrito
Ovid's
Sontino's

-Re: Furlongs. The owner Tommy Walters has had a ton of restaurants in Lex/Lou, currently at Proud Mary where you can still get a few of his cajun staples.
Tommy Walters once leased a 4Runner that was so trashed inside from his using it as a catering vehicle and his dirty clothes in and out of the seats for 3 or 4 years, Bank One send him a $12,000 excess wear and tear bill. He came in to the dealership and begged our GM to bail him out. The GM had me call Bank One, and I was able to negotiate the bill down to $6,000 for him.

It was so disgusting when he turned it in to us, I paid a service porter $20 to put plastic over the seat and park it in the back for me.

I am not sure who owned it before him, but Bobby Murray (Merrick Inn) owned it when we were there. He sold it around 2003-2004 which is when it changed over to O’Neils.

Speaking of Darryl's. It's pretty easy to find here.

IF im not mistaken didnt there used to be a Duff's driving range on Nicholasville Rd where you basically would hit into where Regency Center Kroger is now? Or did i make that up in my head? Basically, the teeing area was next to Pieratt's.

Yep. Took up the game while attending UK and was a regular at that driving range. Got to know the owner/operator and was there so much I’d help him out with “chores”.

He gave me some swing lessons, discount on range balls and my first pair of classic metal spiked saddle oxfords.

I own a barrel from Darryl's. Kept it all these years from the 70's and turned turned into into a bourbon bar. Im guessing my dad stole it while working there going to UK.

Remember that driving range also. Wasn't there either a concession stand or a dairy freeze or something there as well?

The range building sold some snacks. Seems like there might have been a dairy freeze nearby, maybe across the street, but my wallet was always too thin for that stuff

There was a Cajun restaurant that was across from the Gatton School on the corner of Prall. Lasted about a year back in 98-99. Went under because the founder died per my understanding. Unbelievable Cajun tenders and really cheap beer. Would crush on Fridays on my way back to Royal Lex.
