Late Offered DeLaurier Commits to Duke

Yeah, not good at all. Thought they would have moved along after most recent signing. Guess not. Still think we have a good shot at him, though.

Ugh. If Duke lands Giles AND Gabriel - combined with who they already have - I'm going to puke.

Who? If so, they don't know what they're talking about. UNC is the last place Giles would land.

Read your own board, it's there. I don't know your teasers from others.
May be just someone poking fun at UNC, but it's there.
I don't post on your board, just went their for info.
BTW, I'm a rare UK fan who actually watches Duke on tv, thus my interest.

I know it could've been Cal being Cal -- but when he talked about "greatest class ever" for '16 -- regarding "guys he felt good about" -- it's a given he would've been referring to Monk, Fox and Bridges -- but I would assume he had a decent feel on Giles and some others? I know recruiting is in constant flux .. but don't like the way Duke's and MSU's in particular classes are shaping up.

I cannot see Gabriel going to Duke. If we go with the popular assumption that Giles will be there, and now with Tatum and DeLaurier... and then add in some other bigs, like Vrank and Obi (who are not that tier of talent, but...) Maybe if DeLaurier is not seen as getting many minutes his first year?

I guess it COULD be done if...

At the 5 you do Jeter for 30/Giles for 10
At the 4 Giles for 20/Gabriel for 10/DeLaurier for 10
At the 3 Tatum for 30/Gabriel for 20
At the 2 and 1 other guys who aren't these guys?

That leaves no time for Vrank or Obi. Neither of those guys are top talents, so maybe that is fine?

I suppose it COULD happen... having a lot of talent isn't a bad thing, and K could be selling the idea of some crazy super team...? And clearly Duke is trying to land him. That said, I just can't see it happening.

You're the most reasonable Duke fan I know. I'll give K credit for adapting to Cal's creation of one and done brilliance - but admittedly sickening when we pretty much had our pick and now have to split with K. I know Cal still had more magic up his sleeve though..

It has become a recruiting war. Neither Duke or UK want to make anything easy on the other guy.

My question is, would K over-sign and leave players riding the pine just to spite Cal?

We've already seen that Cal will do whatever is necessary to get guys on the floor and get them exposure. Wonder what K is selling.

Think we're setting ourselves up for a fall here. As of right now, Gabriel is still taking an OV to Duke on their version of BBM. He'll be really the only 2016 recruit there and the sole focus of the Duke student body. All that stuff you're not supposed to do when recruits visit (chants, signs, etc.) but is okay when Duke does it, they'll be doing for Gabriel. They'll probably be giving out special t-shirts to everyone as well.

Kid and his family are Duke fans. If he takes that visit, I think he'll end up at Duke regardless of who else they sign. They'll blow smoke up his arse about backing up Tatum for a year and getting tons of play at the 3-4 as a soph.

It's no coincidence they're pulling out all stops after the UK visit. If they can keep him from committing to us and following through on his OV to Duke, not liking our chances here.

Amazing our crap luck at the SF position. First choice is a Flint kid with friends going to MSU and immense pressure to stay home, and second choice is a kid who is life-long Duke fan. Best SF in class is already committed to Duke and second best (Jackson) has Mom who doesn't like Cal.

Yupp, Jonathon Isaac too...

I just worry that if we strike out on Gabriel, Alkins will already be too far gone.

Hey Tul, what is Duke's scholarship situation right now? And what would it be assuming they signed Gabriel and Giles? Are there only 10 scholarship players right now? Only Plumlee is a senior and Ingram is likely to leave. So that's 4 spots....Jackson, Tatum, DeLaurier, Gabriel, and Giles is 5? But I realize both Grayson and Thorton could leave as well.

Couldn't agree more. If we miss on Gabriel - Alkins becomes a must - or Simmons - who is dying to come to UK .. but most have conceded to UNLV/OSU. Duke's class could rival our '13 class - it's crazy.

Jefferson is also a senior.

Hm, let me look.

Okay, three of the current guys are walk-ons. Figure that is three available, plus we assume Ingram, and then Plumlee and Jefferson, who both graduate. That leaves seven "serious" (i.e. non walk on) players.

Add Tatum, Javier, and Jackson, that is only 10. Could fit three more, which I think Duke students would ideally like to be Bolden, Giles, and Gabriel. So there would be no walk-ons with scholarships (athough there WOULD be a few lower level guys, in Vrank and Obi, who are three star type recruits.)

If anyone else goes early (Allen or Jeter or Thornton) it would open up a few more, but I personally doubt any of those guys will be ready to go, especially Jeter.

So yes, there IS space on the roster. It would likely require a number of guys being ready to sit on the bench their first year... K rarely goes that deep.

Lol - so glad Luke Kennard didn't come to UK and get recruited over.

I suspect Matthews will see more floor time in his career at UK than Kennard will at Duke, and have a more successful NBA career thereafter as well.

Actually think it's a good sign Duke is going hard for Gabriel. They must have an idea that Kentucky has momentum in this recruitment and it's a desperation move to end that. Hoping Gabriel sees the much greater availability of minutes at Kentucky for next year and doesn't buy what Duke is saying.

I think most people expect a lot from Kennard... not many SGs or SFs in the group being discussed (all of DeLaurier, Giles, Bolden, and Gabriel are bigs). Haven't you guys landed more guys (or are looking at more guys) who play the same spot as Luke? Fox, Mulder, Simmons, Alkins, Bridges... all are guys who could do time at a guard or SF slot, all of which Luke plays.

I don't think many people see Luke as having the physical tools of an immediate NBA presence, so playing some years at Duke isnt a bad thing. It isn't like Duke hasn't had more than its fair share of famous sweet shooting white boys, after all:)

Some UK fans like to downplay Kennard but he is a great addition at Duke and would have been the same at UK. Always gives 100 percent, knows his way around the basket and is a solid if not amazing shooter.

I think it's probably just as much a follow-up to the DeLaurier commitment this weekend, to let him know they still want him and what his role would be.

Also, to the Duke fan, if Duke lands Giles, Gabriel, and Bolden, that would be ten 5-star guys, probably all MCDAA types, and an 11th 4-star guy who would probably be a 5-star in a normal year.

Considering K has never been one to play more than 7-8 guys, who are the 3-4 guys who will never see the floor next year except during blowouts? Serious question. I'm guessing DeLaurier, Jeter, Gabriel - who else? Bolden? Kennard? Or will K try to platoon? After dealing with what we dealt with last year, where I think Cal handled the roster situation quite well (usually), it just sounds like a roster nightmare to me.

We're still dealing with consequences of that overloaded roster today, with controversy over whether Cal should have stayed with the twins in the Wisconsin game. There are other question marks as well. Would Towns' development have been more rapid if he'd been playing 35 mpg from the start of the season?

If I was a Duke fan, I don't know if I would want to go down that path. It sounds great on paper, but it can be as much of a curse as a blessing.

Yeah, definitely tough. I thought people bitching about platoons were idiots, to be frank... it was not only necessary, given the talent you guys had this year, but FFS, look at the results, both in terms of wins and in terms of draft spots.

I would wager, if Duke DID get everyone... crap. Hm. Okay, assuming that Ingram goes, obviously...

Starters:
Thornton
Jones
Tatum
Giles
Bolden

First off the bench...
Allen (for the PG or SG)
Jackson (for the SG or SF)
Jeter (for the C)
Gabriel (for the PF)

Then...
Kennard (for the SF)

And then...
DeLaurier (for the PF)
Vrankovic (for the C... but he is a VERY low ranked guy)
Obi (for the C... but again, a low ranked guy)

That year would be pretty damn packed.

But keep in mind, Grayson Allen might go, Derryck Thornton could go... maybe even Jeter (although I cannot imagine that happening.) That leaves what, six or seven genuine top tier talents. And figure that , if they ALL stayed, maybe 8 guys could be gone (either to the NBA or graduation) the NEXT year.

So yeah, it would be tight, but the guys who stick around would get some time in the next year. And it is probably better to have a few talents too many than to have a few too few.

Hey, not a bad problem to have, as you guys just found out:)

That would be a very talented roster. BUT..we would be right there with them; and what if we added 5* Adebayo and Ulis returned:

5* Ulis
5* Fox
5* Monk
4* Matthews
4* Mulder
5* Gabriel
5* Adebayo
5* Lee
5* SKJ
4* Wynyard
4* Humphries

Darryl

I thought Ulis was a 4 star?

he's said multiple times this past season that the end isn't in the forseable future. I take that at his word and believe he has at least 5 more seasons. As long as his health holds up I don't see him leaving which is fine by me. We won't push him out like y'all did Rupp. Also I remember before 2010 soooo many opposing fans said he was too old to win another but yet here he is still winning and getting recruits like he's still got something to prove. For your sake you better hope he retires ASAP but I'm afraid it ain't happening

Why are you here? Seriously, why?

i think Duke will lose Allen this year for sure. I think he's going to be one of the best players in the ACC. Thornton will be a two year guy unless something ridiculous happens, like another championship. Jones should have been a two year guy.

Jeter unfortunately will be lost in the shuffle I think - and will probably transfer out in a year or two somewhere closer to home. I wasn't that impressed with him in the games I saw him in. I'm assuming guys like Obi, Kennard, DeLaurier, just really value that Duke degree, and will stick around regardless.

The Duke paranoia continues to grow. We haven't even played this season and ya'll have crowned them 2017 champs.

But I love the point about only playing 5 at a time. To piggy back on that, K only plays his top 7 most of the minutes, so having depth doesn't really give them much of an edge in their system.

What it does is gives them experience the next season. Kennard and Jeter as Juniors and DeLaurier and maybe Gabriel as Sophs. Then sign a few more Freshmen studs. That gives them another great team for 2018.

I think Cal is doing the same thing with guys like Matthews, Humphries, Mulder, and Wynyard.

You know, I've tried hard to like K. I've tried to remember his moments of graciousness and good sportsmanship, but he's like the really pretty, too perfect cheerleader that you can't help but despise, and it eventually comes out that she is banging the entire football team.

K really needs that molesting collies storyline to emerge. I think the entire sport would benefit.

Cal meanwhile is like the Magneto of college coaches, the inveterate bad guy, but you can kind of see he has a point, and at the end of the day, you kind of suspect he is going to be a hero.

I dont know how to take this duke visit tomorrow. It either means K is desperate to stay in it because he knows odds are against him and this is a hail mary. Im going to go with that.

And Ulis was a 4 star. 30-40 if i recall
