Late Offered DeLaurier Commits to Duke

This further cements my belief that all these guys people think Duke is going to get is not going to happen . They just don't have 8-9 rides to go around . And I can't believe you offer this guy if you think you are getting Giles AND Gabriel AND Bolden .

I don't think DeLaurier has any impact on Giles or Bolden. I don't think they end up getting all three of those (Gabriel being the one out) but definitely could see Bolden and Giles. Delaurier is going to be more of the Amile Jefferson role player, energy guy who is pretty athletic and will be there 3-4 years. I hope this pushes Gabriel more towards us and kills Duke's chance completely. I feel more comfortable going only against Maryland.

Zero impact on Giles. Zero impact on Bolden.

They probably won't get Bolden and Giles anyway. Just not enough room for both plus Jeter and Tatum (who will play a lot at the 4, IMHO) to get enough minutes inside.

This is a 4 year player for depth and experience in the future.

Duke fans are saying that K has backed off of Gabriel. It looks to be a two horse race for him.

Watching this recruitment from afar, I think it's pretty obvious the kid was planning on spending 4 years somewhere and wasted no time taking the best offer available to him on both an academic and basketball front.

Congrats to him.

With that said, I don't think this commitment changes much about anything related to us, or even Duke either, really.

That's different because top 20 guys don't see those 2 foreign players as a threat for whatever reason , though Humphries will be 1st round pick in 2 years . I think they get one of the 3 I mentioned IMO and it will be Giles IMO .

Do you have a link to stories with quotes from top 20 guys who don't see those 2 foreign players as a threat? Thanks.

At this point Duke does not seem likely for Gabriel. DeLaurier is a top forty ish guy who is very very bright, athletic, and is rising quickly. Perfect "foundational" guy to suppliment the top five talent types.

Bolden and Giles both seem like likely targets, and many expect them both to be at Duke.

Tatum is expected to play the 3.

Of course it does with wenyen gabriel. It is going to be a UK - Maryland battle. Other schools outside looking in

DeLaurier would take exactly zero minutes from Wenyen Gabriel, if Gabriel decided he wanted to go to Duke.

It would be like me telling you that Tai Wynyard is the reason UK didn't get Diallo.

Those players are on completely different tiers.

Agree. DeLaurier is a nice catch for you guys.

You have to read the tea leaves my friend. Duke sent their 3rd assistant by himself to see gabriel the last couple of visits . They arent in play any more, duke saw writing on wall and made a move on delaurier

Now that we're hard after this kid, I think my confidence of landing Bridges is pretty slim right now. Even though I like Bridges and think he's the better talent, this kid wouldn't be a bad replacement. If Bridges goes to Msu and this kid comes to UK, I bet this kid goes higher in the draft by just coming to KY with so much untapped potential.

Some Duke posters are conceding Giles to UNC......:grimace:
They're just posters, but I don't believe UNC is Giles 2nd choice.
Not the right shade of blue.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You said "this kid" a lot, without specifying which kid:) You mean Gabriel, right?

And I haven't seen anyone concede Giles to UNC. There was a guy who got confused and read the 247 predictions in reverse, and saw the oldest ones (which favored UNC.) But everyone is pretty confident about Giles, including one guy from Durham who has some connections with the program who said it had been over since like June. Again, who knows, but there is a LOT of confidence about Giles from a number of people who have some loose connections to the program.

If u read that on our board it was a total 100% joke lol making fun of THR guys

Not sure Bolden ends up at Duke.

I think he might end up in Lawrence. KU has very little competition inside (Diallo is likely gone next season and the rest of their bigs are a bit on the pedestrian side).

Not that it matters, with Thornton, Jackson, Allen, Jones, Kennard, Tatum, Laurier, Giles, Jeter, and Obi, they have the most talented team in the nation, most likely. Ten deep. Coach K has more than he can play and he won't platoon like Cal, so some talented guys are going to ride the pine. Bolden just pushes some more guys to the bench if he goes to Duke.

Since Giles has been considered a lock for Duke for awhile now, its really going to sting for Duke fans if he does decide to go elsewhere. For us KY fans, its going to be really funny if that happens. As a KY fan, I really don't put much faith in insiders and recruiting talk, so when it says a recruit is a lock to my school, I pay little attention to the talk and don't get too upset if it doesn't turn out to be true.

Exactly.

We should never think we have someone locked up.

I think Mudiay and Newman are recent examples of that.

That would be a very talented roster. BUT..we would be right there with them; and what if we added 5* Adebayo and Ulis returned:

5* Ulis
5* Fox
5* Monk
4* Matthews
4* Mulder
5* Gabriel
5* Adebayo
5* Lee
5* SKJ
4* Wynyard
4* Humphries

quote on zagsblog from the kid..
“Right now coaches are talking about using me as a stretch four early and then as my skill development catches up with my athleticism, using me as a three,”

guess Duke doesn't have any trouble lying to land a recruit... no way he ever snifs the 3 at Duke.

You are right. Not with Jones and Tatum there. Maybe they mean he moves to the 3 his Sophomore year after Jones and Tatum both leave.

K will be 69 this winter. That means for your 100% comment to ring true, you're going to have 73 year old coach prancing the sidelines when JD is a senior.

That will actually be fairly entertaining to watch. At what point do the reasonable portions of your fan base expect K to step down? I think he goes until he's dead or until he's 80.

he's said multiple times this past season that the end isn't in the forseable future. I take that at his word and believe he has at least 5 more seasons. As long as his health holds up I don't see him leaving which is fine by me. We won't push him out like y'all did Rupp. Also I remember before 2010 soooo many opposing fans said he was too old to win another but yet here he is still winning and getting recruits like he's still got something to prove. For your sake you better hope he retires ASAP but I'm afraid it ain't happening

I believe Bear Bryant died at 69 only 37 days after retiring.....I don't think Joe Paterno lasted that much longer. He seriously might be worried about what happens when he retires? Coaches that spend forever at one school and then retire don't have a great track record in the actuarial table department. It's something psychological and physiological about losing your life's purpose and allowing your body to slow down.

K still looks really healthy. I would hang it up while I was still in pretty good shape if I were him. Get Giles and make 2016-17 the swan song and try to go out on top. Get the gold medal in 2016 and then a title in 2017, and ride into the sunset as a hero.

Larry Brown is 75 and coaching. Jim Boeheim is 72. Sheesh some folks act like K's about to break the Guinness book of world records for oldest College Coach when in reality he's hardly unique when it comes to the number of guys who have coached to his age and beyond.

And I don't consider any player a lock to anywhere at any time. If they're a lock then why not announce it already? Surely the tedious hostings to pandering college coaches can't be that enjoyable.

Yep, Tatum should have it locked up 35min a game. Then take into consideration K usually plays 3 guard lineups ... they should have more post depth the next few years but Winslow ended up playing the 4 and it wouldn't surprise me if (by end of season) Ingram will play the 4 this season .. .and next season Tatum logging minutes there...

before anyone calls me crazy because Ingram is a stick... he has the length to get away with it and I remember thinking in the Natty championship game 2 seasons ago that we would destroy UCONN on the boards when Deandre Daniels played the 4... but they got away with it and did a good job of keeping us from dominating the glass...

Back to Delaurier.... using my amateur youtube scouting skills... he doesn't look or move like a 3 either... He looks like an excellent low post prospect though....above average length, mobility, and a decent rim protector..... If Duke is recruiting kids like these as backups, it's not a good thing. this class is loaded and #41 prospect is still really talented with a high ceiling...

Obviously, I doubt they think they get all of those guys but I'm sure K knows that he has to have multi year guys. He still needs to add depth.

Adam Rowe is now saying that K, Scheyer, and Capel will be in MA to visit Wenyen tomorrow.
