Ulis is a great college guard, we saw that last year. I was a huge Harrison twins fan, but had to admit the Cats were just smoother and more efficient with him on the floor. He has that 'it' factor, whatever it is. Briscoe and Murray have impressed me as future NBA starters, with everything you can imagine between them: Grit, speed, penetrating ability, natural scoring touch and outside shooting. One, or both of them are at the top of the class in all those attributes.

So, I was trying to think of the last team with three guards as talented. The most recent one I can come up with is Illinois in 2005, with Dee Brown, Deron Williams and Luther head. And guys my age remember the 1978 Arkansas trio of Sidney Moncrief, Ron Brewer and Marvin Delph.

Any trio more recent you'd compare? Or that you'dtake hands down over Ulis-Briscoe-Murray?

I'm not sure, but the Illinois team is the one I'd think of right away.

Could this be the best group of 3 guys starting at the 1,2, 3, as far as passing/setting up teammates in UK History?

I know that is a bit unfair as a lot of times UK has not went 3 guards, but these 3 are all considered really good passing guys.

the best 3 guard lineup I can think of off the top of my head would be Hawkins, Fitch, and Bogans all playing together in '03. That entire team's ball movement was something to behold... even into the following season when Azubuike basically replaced Bogans.

Yeah, that is a good point. The 2003 team was a really good passing team. Those 3 guys were definitely great together. I think from a pure talent standpoint this group is a better trio, but it remains to be seen if they can move the ball as well as that group did. I forget how good that team was sometimes. I think it is the Tubby effect. I try to blot out a lot of his time here, as well as the drunk's.

2003, 2004, and 2005 was a great 3 year run for almost any program other than UK. The records were great...the post-season success was just a bit wanting in the NCAA Tourney with no final fours in that bunch.

Duke last year, Illinois in '05, and UK in '03 all had great success running 3 guards. Those are teams that stand out.

UK next season could potentially do it at an even higher level when you take into consideration the fact that we will have 3 other talented guards coming off the bench.

I would say the 79-80 Cats were as good as anything if you're strictly talking about talent leading up to the year:

Kyle Macy
Dwight Anderson
Dirk Minniefield
Derrick Hord

Insofar as pure talent goes, that is an incredible group

"Grit, speed, penetrating ability, natural scoring touch and outside shooting. One, or both of them are at the top of the class in all those attributes."

they seem to have that clutch "ready" gene born into them as players. we have two guys (three counting ulis) who you put the ball in their hands in the finals seconds of the play clock and they are going to get an open shot for themselves or some one else with one little juke or crossover or step back, and likely hit the shot. or get fouled driving. we will have one of them on the floor at all times is hilarious.

if we get that spacing down we learned in 2011 with the pick and roll, dribble hand offs, and dribble drives, we will be lethal in the half court. in the full court we will excel per usual. can't wait to see matthews, mulder, murray on the break lol.

Notre Dame had a lot of talented guards last year. Also, can't forget Villanova's team with Randy Foye, Kyle Lowry, and Allan Ray.

thoughts on what Villanova runs? they usually have a three guard line up.

On his show today, Matt said an unnamed national bball guy told him that we may have the three best ball-handling guards in the country. So we got that going for us. Which is nice.

The starting lineup in 2003 was Fitch, Bogans, Hayes, Daniels, and Estill. Cliff Hawkins came off the bench when he was reinstated.

Our 98 squad started Turner, Sheppard, and Edwards, which was a pretty good look. '96 featured Epps, Delk and Anderson, and personally I think of DA as a shooting guard, but obviously he wasn't used as much of playmaking guard that year.

I forgot that Villanova team, which was a terrible call away from beating UNC-CHeats in the Final Four in 2009, despite having players who could read and write (English, not Swahili.)

I don't recall that Villanova/UNC coming down to one call...but I may be mistaken. Care to elaborate? Seems like a reach to me seeing they won by 14, an one call almost never determines a game, especially with that final margin.

I'm not sure you could say they were all guards but Dampier, Conley, and tommy Kron were pretty damn good.

IU 1975-1976 Quinn Buckner, Bobby Wilkerson, John Laskowski, and Wayne Radford,
