Those wild pitches are somewhat why it is good to have that bunt. We avoid a double play and we put pressure on the defense and we get a couple breaks and score a run with 2 outs. Works to help manufacture a run. A lot of other results keeps the runner at 1st, gets two outs, or a fielder's choice which still leaves someone at first. Of course, other options are certainly higher reward than that bunt, but I think it is a decent little compromise, because it really was an attempt to bunt for a hit.
