I think people get too worked up over things like this. Too much time left to worry about where Giles ends up. It may not be UK, but you never know. It seems every year a kid is a lock to go somewhere until its time to decide. You would think people would learn from past years recruiting and not be fooled every single year.

Our fanbase has to get over the misses this spring and start planing on getting who we want. Just because this years class didn't come does not mean the 2016 will do the same.

I understand Duke is hard to beat in recruiting, but Cal has beat coach K in recruiting more then lost to him. Cal has shown he can get the kids outta Duke's back yard time after time.

I don't think it's that Kentucky fans think we can't beat Duke in recruiting. We did beat Duke for Gabriel. I don't even wanna hear the we backed off bs. None of us have any of that information to make a claim like that. I think it's more of the fact Duke has his BFF apparently commited in Tatum. I don't expect us to land Giles, but i won't give up hope yet either. Cal would not put in so much work and time recruiting a kid he knew he couldn't land. If Cal thinks he has a shot, i too think we have a shot. The best thing about being a Kentucky fan right now is even if we don't get Giles, the roster we will have will still be awesome and good enough to compete for a title. If Duke lands Giles, they will be loaded with forwards and we will be loaded with guards. I'm hoping we will be able to match up with their elite forwards than they are matching our elite guards.

Good points. I am amused how many times a poster here will make an almost mocking comment about how we have no shot at someone, while Cal is heavily recruiting the player. I mean, do they really think Cal has nothing better to do with his time than to chase a kid he has no shot at getting? Do they really think they have better sources than Cal? Sometimes they are right and sometimes not, which is to be expected when there are only 2 possible results.

I read somewhere today that Coach Cal is starting to try to get more involved in recruiting Jarret Allen, and it's because he knows he's probably going to lose out on Giles.

Just assume Giles is going to Duke and be pleasantly (understatement) surprised if he picks UK.

Pretty simple.

Just like I assume all of our freshman will jump to the NBA. If they don't, great news.

I like Jarrett Allen's potential, he reminds me of WCS in HS.

That being said, because he reminds me of WCS in high school, I don't see him really contributing right away.

Especially not with Humphries, Wynyard, SKJ and Gabriel already in the fold, and the potential that Marcus Lee returns.

I'm glad it's Cal personally taking care of business.

Crazy how Giles would rather be planted underneath the basket in K's offense.

I guess Giles likes the Okafor situation. No real improvement in college, but will get a favorable seed with his team and will be coddled by babysitters in white and black stripe shirts. Great for the short term, but not so good for the long term.

I always wondered if that coddling from the officials hurts their NBA careers. So many crappy Duke players get into the NBA. They start playing and realize calls won't go their way. It took JJ Reddick like 7 years to adjust to fair play. Trying times, indeed.

Exactly, Lineski.

That coddling gives them MJ treatment in college that is awarded to every Duke verbal. The problem is that when they get away with blatant favoritism in college, they soon realize that you actually have to be great to get favorable NBA calls.

When I heard Giles had invited coach k to his birthdays I lost any hope. Can't lie. I hope we get him and with cal I never get stressed about recruiting because he's done an amazing job every year. But it looks like a longshot. We'll be ok either way.

I think Cal always has a shot, even if it is a long one. If it goes till spring, I like our chances. If he decides before then, he is going to Duke.

So, he's not considering UK? I guess that's why he has attended BBM 2 years in a row. He must enjoy wasting his time. Nobody thought Labissiere and Murray were coming either. I don't know where Giles will sign, and neither do you.

Maybe he is a college bball fan and wouldn't pass up an opportunity to attend one of the grandest events in said sport.

Hell I would accept a front row seat to MM anytime it was offered.

We didn't back off. Coach K really wanted Gabriel. You guys picked up a hell of a player.
This is true. I think it just came down to who could offer him an immediate shot at playing time. With Tatum already on board and with Gabriel rising to maybe one an done status, it became too hard for Duke to sell time at the 3 position..Giles will play the 4 for Duke,in part, that is why they are trying hard for Bolden to go along with Jeter to play the 5. Kentucky got a hell of a player in Gabriel and one that we all wanted. No one wins every recruiting war.

Spot-on.

The Duke brand is known around the league for being a pampered pedigree. As MKG once tweeted out while still in high school, they're "square" and known for being marked by an elitist aura.

Kentucky, meanwhile, is stockpiling multiple #1 picks to add to a very real "family" of alumni - guys like Cousins, Davis, Bledsoe, etc. - who are known just as much for their badassery as they are for their All-Star caliber of play.

As K pushes ever closer to retirement, he will continue to reel in the OAD elitism mindsets - guys who con themselves into thinking their above all that (i.e., Jabari Parker) but who ultimately leave after a single season anyway. Some of those guys will want to play for a living legend before he steps down. Can't fault a kid coming from that angle.

Cal, meanwhile, will become a legend on his own - more than he currently has. He will have another title (or two) by the time K steps aside, and his NBA list will be well over 50 NBA guys (counting UMass/Memphis). I feel very strongly that he will soon have the recruiting market cornered, and if he lands Monk/Fox it just gives him two more future max contract guys to work with and add to the wall at the Craft Center. Coach K is really the only one holding the floodgates back at this point.

No one wins every recruiting war.

If Cal stays with it another decade or so, I feel like he will come close to winning any recruiting battle he really wants to win, with the obvious west coast loss or hometown Malik Newman situations being the only real exceptions.

I really feel Calipari hasn't even come close to showing the nation what he is fully capable of doing from a recruiting standpoint. Once your boy K is done, Cal will gain even more momentum. Duke will continue to get guys, but Cal won't have the "living legend"/"godfather of Team USA" to contend with anymore, and Kentucky will silence most of the canon fodder that has been fired from Duke lately.

A pleasant thought, unless of course you're a non-UK fan.

The fact that we have a slight chance shows how good Cal is at this thing called recruiting. Most programs wouldn't even have the slightest of chances.

Calipari recruiting in the post-Coach K world is going to be really interesting. I almost feel sorry for the other programs out there who have to contend with Cal in his sixties.

They've had some great players over the years (Brand, Irving, Boozer, etc.), but also some colossal disappointments. William Avery, Danny Ferry, Chris Burgess, Bobby Hurley, Trajan Langdon, etc. - as well as some of the guys you've listed.

I guess that just comes with a large sampling of players - the good, the bad, and the ugly. That said, isn't it amazing the amount of guys who played for Cal that actually made something of themselves? For every Marquis Teague or Andrew Harrison who didn't quite make a successful NBA transition, there's 5 or 6 guys making real movement amongst the NBA's top 150 rankings.

Exactly.

The list of Coach K/Duke duds is much longer than the list of Duke studs.

Likewise, the list of Cal/UK studs is much longer than the list of duds.
