Kentucky at Vanderbilt - scouting report

Any game(especially road game) is a big win in the SEC this season. This is a game we should be able to win with our B+ game ,as you say we can't afford to drop this one and be in position for a decent seed in the SECT.
My fear is every road game for every team in the SEC will require more than a B+ effort. Road games require an A+ effort. Vandy beat TN, I did not watch the game but I think we need to bring the same the same mindset in Nashville that we need to have in Knoxville. Vandy scares me if our team thinks a B+ effort will get a W, it won't. We are not good enough to give anything but an A+ effort.

Coaches and talking heads always whine about the benches at the end at Vandy. But players couldn’t care less.

Certainly doesn’t bother us. We win more there than Bobby Flay.

Only thing Vandy can hope for is it’s not a blowout. 🏀

I was feeling pretty confident about Saturday until you mentioned Bobby Flay. We are so screwed.

Agree.

If Vandy gives an A effort, a B+ effort from UK won’t be enough.

The game is pretty even meaning whichever team plays better wins in my opinion.

Appreciate the novel. Carr won’t be healthy. Butler won’t be healthy enough to be himself. Best case scenario is we win without needing much from either of them so those two can rest. Second best case scenario, in my mind, is we get buried so quickly that we decide we may as well rest those two anyway.

I like the way our team (healthy) and our style of play matches up against what you’re describing in principle. We shoot amazingly well when we have the freedom to whip the ball back and forth and let the plays heat up. Swipe attempts we can weather. It’s large, mobile guys that defend by playing the odds against the refs and pushing the boundaries of “physical” play that short circuit most of what we do. This is a game where I expect Travis Perry, our freshman third string PG and all-time Kentucky High School leading scorer, to excel in. So hopefully that will compensate for us not having Butler at his peak and keep us from playing him hurt.

Everything’s always different on the hardwood than it is in principle. I’m excited to see these two new coaches go at each other and I expect an exciting, high-energy game regardless of outcome. Thanks for the post and for sticking it to UT.

We wanted Travis Perry bad. He’s a stud.

Thanks, Runt! Good to see familiar faces here.

Can we maintain the direction of the program? I think so, NIL and transfer portal is good for us because we never cheated and paid players. Now we can pay players and it’s not only legal but encouraged. We have a lot of wealthy donors who were “stiffarmed” in the past by VU Administration but they can’t really stop it now.

We have SEC money and the rules favor us for the first time in history so I’d be sort of surprised if we couldn’t keep Byington here and continue on the current path.

That said, who knows? We are led by nerds who favor politics at times over logic so nothing would surprise me.

We do like Byington, pretty confident that he can get things rolling and so far, he’s been supported well.
Thanks for sharing ....

Those are the thoughts I share with you, in fact. Ever since the SEC tournament started back up, I felt (but I was a kid back then) that Vandy had the kind of monetary resources that maybe none of the other schools COULD HAVE devoted towards basketball. I just remember how excited I was to get to go see my two favorite teams, driving down to Birmingham with the Big Blue Caravan, and after getting there, seeing NONE of the other schoopls even bother to bring their cheerleaders to the games. I think Vandy was the only one that had at least some of them. Maybe the higher ups in the early games felt like they stood no chance, why not save money with showing as little as possible towards supporting their teams ....

and it was disappointing. HUGELY so for, for a kid. Meanwhile, the Kentucky cheerleaders ? well ... no matter where we went (and I got to personally know those suads back in the 70's, 80's) me and my family were the ONLY people in the upper decks of arenas with Big Blue Shakers and gear that the cheerleaders saved for me to take back up top for everyone with our group.

Even though disappointed, I have always felt close to Vandy, being a Nashville native, and seeing so much memorial gym magic over the years, well, even when it happened to Kentucky, I have to admit ... it was cool to see the joy and happiness of the fans when it happened.

I was glad to be there. Wouldnt trade it for nothing.

Good luck this weekend, Vandy's got a fine coach, I hope he stays a long time and we can look forward to the renewed rivalry !

Unfortunately, we have sucked at basketball for the better part of 7 years now BUT it appears like the Dores are starting to see some progress within the program. Other than ‘23, we really haven’t even played a meaningful game against the Cats in a long long time.

As for Saturday, I really don’t know what to expect. I have watched the Cats play 5 or so games so I’m fairly familiar with your roster. I would characterize y’all as a team with a lot of solid players, no superstars but most everyone is dangerous. I have been very impressed with Mark Pope as a coach both in what he says / how he carries himself and in his ability to get the team to play together and execute in tight games. I am a fan.

Are y’all back to full health with the week off?

As for the Dores, we have a new Coach. Mark Byington came from JMU where he was 32-4 last year including winning at Michigan State and beating Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He’s a very solid coach, smart guy who emphasizes team first mentality and says all the right things. As a Vandy fan, it’s hard not to like this guy.

Jason Edwards is our leading scorer, small guard who is very quick both in movement and release of shot. Can take bad shots but he is fun to watch.

Devin McGlockton is our glue guy and “center” but we really don’t play much in the post. Lots of 5 out, or high post or 4 out 1 in.

AJ Hoggard, transfer from Michigan State is a guy who can win you games or lose you games. We’ve seen both. We function best when he’s driving and distributing primarily.

Jaylen Carey is our only other big. Carey had 14 and 10 vs UTjr but had 6 and 4 (turnovers) vs Bama. He’s young and kinda raw but his body is ridiculous (dad played left tackle for the Dolphins). He’s hit or miss though, some games he is legit looking, others, you want him off the floor.

Tyler Tanner is our lone freshman and is one of the better defensive guards in the country. Only averages 6.4 ppg but is averaging 2.2 steals per game (in only 20 minutes per game). He’s a special player but a freshman so he isn’t relied on for much other than defense.

The rest of the guys are all solid, not great. Tyler Nickel is a decent shooter but can disappear. MJ Collins is a good athlete but can disappear. Grant Huffman is a solid grad transfer PG, who does a lot of the little things. Chris Mañon is another glue guy. High energy, good defensive player, fun to watch but won’t score much.

Overall, I think we’re a solid team who can be very good when we play well. Our formula is to turn it over less than we take it away and we play fast so if we’re making shots, we can be dangerous. We’ve also had a few stinkers where we shot it like doo doo and we weren’t able to overcome that. I think in most years I’d call this team an NCAA Tournament team but the SEC is so good that we may not get to that magical 8-10 mark to make the Dance. Or we might?

Big game Saturday, give me your thoughts or questions.

Also, sorry about the novel.
Love watching the Tyler Tanner kid out of Brentwood Academy. Dude did not commit his FIRST turnover until the Missouri game on 1/11 (went the first 15 games without a turnover). Had 31 assist to ZERO turnovers before that game. On the year he has 37 assist and ONLY 2 turnovers. 18.5/1 ratio, unheard of. Playing 20 mpg and only having 2 turnovers in 19 games is amazing, even if he only averages 2 assist per game. The kid can ball.

Why be an ass to the guy ? He didn't flame or troll. I think he is a pretty solid poster, doesn't call his coach by his first name only as if he was family (like you), so honestly, if I had to choose between one of the two of you as far as posting credentials, well,,,,,,,

All of that is true and I completely agree, he’s a fun watch and he’s really good.

In HS, he was a pure scorer and shooter but hasn’t really been asked to do that yet. I believe that is by design as we have a lot of older guys and Coach Byington wants to rely on them. With that said, Tanner is capable of getting his own shot any time he wants it and Id love to see a little more offensive aggression but I believe that’ll come in due time (I think, but you never know until you see it).

He trains with Darius Garland’s personal coach and has for years. Tanner and DG still text and talk on the phone a good bit. That’s quite the mentor to have and while neither of the above things will make him great, the work ethic and the tools to succeed are there.

I believe Tanner will be a starter next year and a lot of fun to watch.

Really really strange that opponents PPG isn’t on this chart. I love how this was put together, it’s very cool but judging solely by this, it appears that UK is the FAR superior team.

Vandy gives up 69.6 ppg

UK gives up 76.1 ppg

I would think this should have been in there. UK still has the overall edge statistically though imho.

Agree.

If Vandy gives an A effort, a B+ effort from UK won’t be enough.

Did not mean to offend with the B+ comment. If I may explain my thought process:

Vandy does not play the overly physical game that gives us the most problem. Both teams play
a similar type game in that respect(more finesse) Teams don't hit their A game every night out.
If both teams play their B+ game, who wins(granted you have the home court advantage) I think UK has the advantage being a bit older and maybe more battle tested. We probably can't win with less than a B+ effort
We have had a week to prepare and Cal isn't on the sidelines anymore. Looking forward to a basketball game
as opposed to a rock fight or WWE event.

Fair!

I wasn’t offended, brother. I was just saying that I felt like whomever plays better wins. I do think UK is a better overall team but it’s not by a super wide margin.

Looks like UK is a better shooting team and has better size. Vandy appears to be a better defensive team.

Should be fun!

I'm just hoping Kentucky's players have their attention squarely where it belongs -- on the Arkansas game, at least going by all the UK comments on Southeastern 16.

Naah, focus on the tempo free numbers. Both these teams are in the top 50 fastest in the nation so PPG understates their defenses.

With that in mind both Pomeroy and Torvik have UK around 80th in D eff and VU only a few slots higher. They agree that Kentucky is the 3rd offense in the land (behind the two Alabama teams, because that's the year it is in the SEC) and obv we're not near that efficient, though not too shabby in the high 30s.

At home I don't think we have to play the game of our lives or anything, but we do have to play well and take advantage of minor lapses from Kentucky. Byington showed he can get the team doing that last week but this is going to be a much different challenge from TN as an offense-oriented team at a faster tempo than us.
