I don't know John Short, I have never met or seen John Short. But for years I have listened to this man call in UK sports talk shows with an optimism no other UK fan on earth has. He knows more about UK sports than probably anyone on earth. He can quote the box scores of games twenty years ago. He is the Ambassador of UK Sports Talk Show Callers.

So if I was Coach Mark Stoops or Coach John Calipari I would give Mr. John Short a pass to all home games and let him sit in the best seat in the house or on the field. Same goes for women's basketball, baseball and all things UK.

This man has earned a ticket for life.

It's crazy bc I'll hear him call in to leach, ksr, dick gabriel, and I've even heard him call into rush before.

John Short, A Great American.

Cracked me up the other day when he said he didn't care about the Super Bowl, that he'll be listening to the Billy Cunningham show as usual Sunday night!

I know I'll take heat but I'm actually tired of John. I'm annoyed and irritated at the ass kissing and how much Matt builds him up on the show. I knew it was coming a few weeks back when they were doing their top 3 callers of 2014 on KSR but when Matt named John as #1 I just shook my head. If Matt would treat John like he does every other caller and Ryan then I'd probably like him but that's obviously not going to happen for certain reasons. I thought John was funny and alright when I started listening but over a log period of time I started getting burned out on the daily John Short lovefest.

I know I probably shouldn't feel that way but I do and can't help it.

Why?

What makes him so special that free tickets are in order?

Are we going to do that for every "special" person out there? For every physically disabled person? For every child with cancer?

I'm as sympathetic to people and their situations as anyone, but I'll bet you there are lots of things on John Short's mind besides Kentucky basketball...unlike some of the people on here who have less involvement with the real world than this virtual one

I'll bet John would be insulted if you told him you were giving him tickets based on him being "special". Every time I've ever heard him speak he is proud of being a working man with opinions, nothing "special" about him.

OP might take notice.

Anybody that has a problem with John Short is probably a social misfit themselves. The guy is harmless and down to earth. He has a fantastic outlook on life and displays a sincere degree of innocence. That's his attraction.

1. Has a love for UK sports -- not just UKMBB -- that would rival any fan's love.

2. Has consistently called in and in a positive way for, I don't know, what, 30 years or more?

3. Can recite facts about obscure UK miscellany like nobody other than maybe Jon Scott. I'd almost bet he could tell you off the top of his head the starting 5 for our home game against Miss. St. in 1989.

And, not that it should affect him getting tickets, if you told him your birthdate, he could tell you what day it falls on within about 20 seconds.

I mean, C'MON, MAN!

And then, there's this...

Most of us were born with mental and physical capacities that would put us in the "normal" range. We have the potential to become athletes, business owners, etc. Others born with fewer abilities that greatly limit their opportunities to achieve at a high level in school, in sports, in business, etc. are a much smaller segment of the population. Given that they'll never likely accumulate the means to acquire the kind of mountain-top experiences you or I can, what's the harm in helping them get ONE thing that they're passionate about in life (for John Short--UK sports)?

Guess I would want to know if you feel like the kids and adults who get medals in the Special Olympics really aren't deserving since they've actually done little to "deserve" or "earn" them?

Cal's current contract includes:

- 20 prime lower level tickets to each home, each away game and each tournament game. Also the option to purchase 20 additional tickets as desired.

- 8 tickets to all home football games

I don't see any reason he can't spare a single ticket for Mr. John Short.

I moved to Arkansas about 9 months ago and, oddly, there are few things that remind me of Kentucky more than hearing John Short when I listen to podcasts. I love hearing him call in even if each call is fairly predictable.

Love John Short. Great UK fan. And he is much like several thousand other UK fans that feel as strong for UK.

Give him free tickets so he can go to some games. Then allow other great fans to have the same experience. That is the thing about UK fans ... we want others to experience the thrills that we do! I bet John Short would agree.

Go cats.

Did you even read the first post?

U9K, I guess I didn't word it right. What I dislike is the ass kissing from Matt and the constant lovefest and not really John himself. This thread and the idea to just give him free tix is an example of what I mean. If he was treated like any other caller on the show I wouldn't think a thing about it.

And Brian, there was a kid my age back in school that you could tell him your birthday once and ask him 2 years later and he would still know your birthday. It became a thing where everybody in school would tell him their birthday just to see if he could remember it later on and he always did. He also could tell you what day a date was on years ago. He was also slightly mentally handicapped like John and that's what gives them the ability to remember and know those type of things. It isn't as if John goes home at night and studies a UK history book for hours every day. It's just an ability to hear certain things one time and be able to remember it forever.

No need to feel sorry for John Short. He never misses a game. He is in row A section 12 right behind the rail. He is a great American and I never tire of his enthusiasm. I love to watch him clap. He always has his headset on listening to Tom & Mike.

Zay that is hating on Matt and if you want to that is fine but don't hate on someone as harmless and nice as John. Also while what you said about him remembering everything might possibly be true , more likely he is like some of us , myself included , that spend hours a day studying every thing UK related so we remember things .

John's endearing, because he's a representative of the normal, every day, simple life, loves the Cats, kind of UK fan that so many of us either are, know, or both.

Everyone reading this thread has someone from their hometown that you probably only see once a year or so, but that you always stop and speak to when you're around and it's almost always about the Cats. There's just that bond there among people from here, a kind of universal language. Transcends wealth, class, status, physical or mental limitations, politics, whatever.

I think Matt, who can typically be pretty harsh while trying to toe the line between funny and firm, does a good job of handling Mr. Short's calls. He doesn't try to turn him into a joke, but doesn't take him too seriously. I'd imagine that's how John Short sees himself. Hell, we probably all should.

Great post gonzo! My two cents. Regardless of " free tickets" or praise or dislike. This thread is distasteful. Whatever your opinion. Not knocking or the OP or any of the responses. I just think this is a discussion that is turned into likes and dislikes of too many people. There is no,right or wrong but there are too many things you could cherry pick of people involved from matt jones , John short, disabilities , UK tickets, fandom, politics, favoritism ect...

The only entertaining thing about John Short is when MJ tries to knock him off the subject. Asks him about being such a liberal, what he thinks of the super bowl or anything in the news. Other than that, his views are WORTHLESS. Who cares how many points he thinks UK wins by..

Just try to remember that none of the things you listed about him are his fault.

He's just a guy who loves the cats and wants to talk about them.

If anything, he gives humorously underwhelming responses when Matt tries to pump him up - like when Matt went on the angry rant about Kroger not having Short meet Calipari - Matt ended his rant, then 5 second silence, and John says "well, okie dokie" or something like that. He obviously is 0% wrapped up in that stuff you mention.

Samwise Just the other day you suggested that I should be banned for life for suggesting that this should be a UK basketball forum instead of a political one. Sounds like that it would be a good riddance to ge rid of you.

So do you have anything to contribute to the issue or just want to bash me for contributing to this board, in all its iterations, for about 20 years?

Don't recall that at all now
In what respect?

Sorry to point out to you Johnny is NOT normal
WOW! By this statement he is certainly not the only one NOT normal.

Yes my friends love me

But I don't insult them by suggesting they are poor pathetic miserable wretches who live to be pitied or made into public causes

Why is that so hard for you to see

John wants your respect for being a good citizen, not for being "special" and so does every person disadvantaged or humbled by life

in other words, keep your tickets and treat him like he's more than a poster child
