Jemarl Baker (SG) to Kentucky?

Baker looks like a perfect fit to me. He will be surrounded by great athletes who can all play above the rim, so he could be a very important contributor in balancing out the team for 10-15 minutes a game next year with an expanded role as he matures.

When I think of the back to back title teams for Florida in '06 and '07, the thing that made them such a difficult matchup was their great balance of athleticism, length, and shooting. Horford, Noah, and Brewer got all of the attention (and Taurean Green to a lesser extent... who Quade actually reminds me a lot of), but the guy that would really break the other team's back was Lee Humphrey. He was 6'2" and as unathletic as they come playing the 2, but he would kill you with the dagger 3's when he was often left wide open because so much of the defensive focus was on the other guys.

Would love to sign the kid from Pitt too (and Bamba of course). Would give us a ton of lineup flexibility.
Great point about Lee Humphrey. Always seemed to hit big shots. Big Kentucky fan but really enjoyed watching those Florida teams other than Noah.

I've seen him listed at both 6'2" and 6'4", so that makes him what - 6'0"?

Interesting. From what I've read on the two, Smith is the more complete player. Baker is only 165 lbs, and not overly athletic (which to me says he is not quick). That is not a good combination. So defense could be a problem. And unless you are an elite player, if you don't defend Cal won't play you.
Think Willis and Hawkins.

OH I didn't know Ulis played 2G. I stand corrected. May bad. I can't recall another NBA 2G other than Ulis to be successful in the past 15 years. I'll keep looking. Smh
Why does everyone have to be an NBA player. I doubt very seriously that Hawkins will ever play in the NBA but he turned out to be a very valuable player for UK.

I'm always skeptical of West Coast guys leaving the west coast. Doesn't happen often and they are often miserable and home sick until they return back to the west. Hope this kid is the exception to the rule.

From the little I've seen on the tape. I like the Illinois kid better. Bigger and more burst. Baker gonna have tough time getting off shots in high D1. If we are gonna use the scholly on another guard give me the one with size and upside. Otherwise roll with Green, Diallo, Alexander and use Vanderbilt at the 2 some in a crunch.

Well we've had more than our
share of kids who underplayed their rankings.
IMO Cal is not recruiting these guards to sit them. He's not looking at them as guys who will contribute in years 3/4.

AS for Johnson from Pitt. Not your traditional grad transfer who played somewhere 3 years and wants 1 year at a big time school. He's really a guy who wants to transfer and just has the option to not have to sit out a year because he has graduated. Maybe the first of this kind. NCAA might frown on it especially if he were to select UK.

I know Cal says he wouldn't do it again, but get 2/3 of these guys and play the platoon again.
With not too many folks likely leaving after next year he could just bring in 2/3 studs and have a great shot in 2019. Would love to see the platoon again. With not a lot of shooting, use the platoon and defense to wear opponents down.
More than our share of kids who underplayed their rankings?

You are wildly wrong. Like, Earth is flat wrong. We've had SOME kids underplay their rankings, but go back and look through recruit rankings this decade and compare that percentage with the general percentage of top 25 recruits who don't make a huge impact.

Call me crazy, but I think the plan is to sign TWO guards if Briscoe decides to leave.

A player like Cam Johnson that brings much needed experience and can start from day 1 along with a great FR 2G like Jemarl Baker. Johnson gets the spotlight he craves while Baker gets a year under his belt playing 10-15 min backing up Green, Diallo, and Johnson to come out and impress next year.

Cal never said he that he wouldn't take a GA transfer, just that he would not actively recruit one. If a player from a major school like Pitt or a player stuck out in the Midwest at New Mexico with almost no press came knocking begging for a chance to play on the ultimate stage, Calipari would MORE than listen.

Calipari consistently praised Julius Mays for his much needed experience, grit, and determination in 2015.

I don't see ANY way Calipari decides 4 guards is enough for the entire season. He will sign a 2G like Baker and wait to see what Briscoe does.

If he leaves, there's little doubt in my mind that all kinds of top GA transfers at guard would be walking into Cal's office offering their services.

In my completely worthless opinion as always!

Exactly. We've had a handful of kids "supposedly' under-perform, but if you go back and look at how they've performed compared to their peers, they did just fine. A good example would be the 2012 class. That was a very weak class overall, but it could be argued that Noel, Goodwin, Poythress, etc. have been pretty damned successful compared to the rest of that class. The top recruits in that class, Bennett, Shabazz Mohammed, have been busts so far.

I'm enjoying him taking control of the floor, giving out commands, just as much as his confident jumper. On the small side but can be a great college player.

They don't but on average their defense suffers due to length. If you're EKU that's fine. We are not.

For me 'Cam Johnson" represents a multitude of extremely talented GA transfer guards available to play right away. There are quite a few this year that are slightly better or worse than Johnson. Represents the same type of player for the Kentucky team, no matter what the name.

Calipari will not choose one that is anything less than spectacular if it comes to it due to Briscoe.

In my completely worthless opinion as always!

All of this talk about Cam Johnson. Just curious, is there a single shred of evidence that UK is remotely interested in him?

I was wondering the exact same thing. I haven't seen anything that says we are involved with him. I think all this talk on here is coming from the KSR article on him but it didn't say we were involved with him, just that he is available.

Give me this kid over Smith any day. We have been missing Lamb and he's the closest we are gonna find for now.

A Lamb-type, sure. People (not saying you) seem to forget about Lamb's mid range game and floaters. For a very marginal athlete Lamb could get some buckets against high-high major competition.

I'd take Cam Johnson and Baker, just because there could be situations where we have absurd athletes on the floor at three spots and then a 40+% three point shooter most of the time. Johnson could really help the team next year.

Pay no attention. Some people forget it's a message board for basketball discussion. It's not like we get to see these kids we recruit in person. So, video is all we have a lot of times. Pay no attention to some of these idiots. I thought your post was spot on to what I had seen.
Wait, so you thought he was left handed also? This is priceless. Maybe it's ME that needs to go back and watch the video again! [roll]

Hawkins was our best defensive guard according to Cal. Facts are hard to overcome sometimes. Sorry that doesn't help your position.

Well, apparently until yesterday, nobody could contact him, so there would be no evidence of anyone being interested in him. Makes sense that Cal could be interested, and given Cal's Pittsburgh roots, I'm sure he knows all about Johnson's game.

Everybody "wants" Johnson, but I don't see it happening. Just a few weeks ago Cal stated his dislike of accepting grad transfers. I know he specifically pointed out grad transfers from mid-majors, but I kind of doubt if he'd go that route after making a public pronouncement against them. JMO
Red shirt jr playing 2 years is different plus f**k Stallings. Think Cal will see this as a disgruntled transfer who happens to be eligible immediately than a grad transfer

Doesn't have to get off shots but keep teams from packing it in. His release looks fine. If he can catch and shoot and keep the defense from packing it in that is all we need

Fact: on the Matt Jones show Hawkins stated and I quote: "the hardest guy for me to guard was Andrew Harrison because he was so tall and would post me up". Guess you have your own facts?

Tony Delk listed at 6'1. Granted Tony was a very nice athlete with long arms.

Shawn Respert was crazy from 3 and was like 6 even.

Travis Ford was 5'10 and no tremendous athlete but still quite dangerous (granted a point but still).

Did any of the old school 3 headed monster guards from SC measure over 6?

All kinds of guys that have a nice stroke were strong college performers. 6'2 is totally manageble to fine in college ball for a 2.

It will just be about want to and opportunities to play defense for Baker from what I can tell.

He is a 4 star as well, he isn't a turd.
