Jemarl Baker (SG) to Kentucky?

I want Bam, Knox, a red Woo Woo, this guy, and anyone else that anyone else on this website wants before they want it. Always Remember a bird in your pants is worth two blondes and a case of beer in the bushes.

Everybody "wants" Johnson, but I don't see it happening. Just a few weeks ago Cal stated his dislike of accepting grad transfers. I know he specifically pointed out grad transfers from mid-majors, but I kind of doubt if he'd go that route after making a public pronouncement against them. JMO

I've watched Baker's video 3 times. The things that jump out to me are: 1) Not just a spot up shooter 2) Can shoot off the bounce 3) Appears comfortable going either direction and pulling up 4) Hard to tell but could be a lefty 4) Good passer 5) Not overly athletic but can finish in traffic.

I agree his playing time will depend on his defense in which these videos don't show much of. I'm comfortable with Baker, Smith or Johnson. Fans just need to be aware that they will be multi-year players and not All-Stars. Expectations should be just that. Not a failure if they don't produce the first year except for Johnson.

I totally agree with that sentiment. I liked Mulder, seemed like a good kid, but count me in the camp of understanding unlike many others, why he didn't play much. Dude looked lost on the court many of times.

I think Baker is a 4 year player who will be a big contributor his 3rd and 4th years.
I want Smith more the Baker but I don't see either as 4 year players. 2-3 year players sure . Alexander on the other hand is a 2 year player as his numbers , size ect will have scouts drooling if he can continue to improve his shot. They love a 6'6 pg.

We will add more grad transfers before Cal leaves. People take things he say way way to literal. He will do what's best for the program . He wants Knox but if it looks like we ain't getting him you can bet he will try for Cam.

Baker looks like a perfect fit to me. He will be surrounded by great athletes who can all play above the rim, so he could be a very important contributor in balancing out the team for 10-15 minutes a game next year with an expanded role as he matures.

When I think of the back to back title teams for Florida in '06 and '07, the thing that made them such a difficult matchup was their great balance of athleticism, length, and shooting. Horford, Noah, and Brewer got all of the attention (and Taurean Green to a lesser extent... who Quade actually reminds me a lot of), but the guy that would really break the other team's back was Lee Humphrey. He was 6'2" and as unathletic as they come playing the 2, but he would kill you with the dagger 3's when he was often left wide open because so much of the defensive focus was on the other guys.

Would love to sign the kid from Pitt too (and Bamba of course). Would give us a ton of lineup flexibility.

I'm aware Baker is not a McDonald's All-American. Just because a guy isn't a 5 star, doesn't mean he can't have similarities to said player. I highly doubt he'll come in from day one and contribute like Lamb did. Doesn't mean he can't contribute similar to Lamb in his 2nd and third year.

Don't lump me in with fans like butters who makes statements like "Diallo is a combination of Jordan and Bill Rusell rphihdihwd."
I agree. I think Bakers game will improve greatly if he comes here. He will be practicing with some of the best college players which will make him a much better player.
What little bit I've seen of him so far looks pretty good for a player ranked in the 80's.
Cal and the staff will do wonders for this kid. Plus he can knock down shots from NBA range.

Yes because height is everything.Tell that to Tyler Ulis.
OH I didn't know Ulis played 2G. I stand corrected. May bad. I can't recall another NBA 2G other than Ulis to be successful in the past 15 years. I'll keep looking. Smh

I think Cal draws a distinction between taking someone who is from a major conference and is openly courting teams to recruit him, and coaches actively seeking players from smaller schools. Basically, be a passive courtee vs. being the suitor.

People all tore up about the Lamb comparison while the Ray Allen comparison on this video flies under the radar.

Nah, just not discussed in this thread. Was talked about quite a bit in original thread about Baker, IIRC.

Interesting. From what I've read on the two, Smith is the more complete player. Baker is only 165 lbs, and not overly athletic (which to me says he is not quick). That is not a good combination. So defense could be a problem. And unless you are an elite player, if you don't defend Cal won't play you.

I've seen a little film on Baker and boy can he shot. Seems like 5' to 10' behind the like is where he likes to shoot from. Big arch on the ball and all net throwing net up over the rim. Speed hard to say I just know several Big Time Programs are all over him. He is rated a 4* and I wouldn't worry about his weight. A True zone buster.

Well I don't get a chance to talk to Cal personally much these days, so I obviously don't know him like you do. I am just going by what the man has said. My bad.

Someone who can just come in and hit an open 3 is all you need to change a game.

Mulder is the perfect example of why we need a reliable shooter. He missed 3 WIDE open 3's against UNC and his only role was to come in and hit the open shot to keep the defense honest.

If Baker/Smith can keep them honest, it can really open up space for the rest of the team upon entry.

I usually agree with @madison1329, but I have to take up for @Bluemoon725 here. Baker's game is very comparable to Lamb's game. Both are quality shooters (from 3 and mid-range) and both play below the rim. I can't comment on Baker's ability to cut through lane and get to the rim because I haven't watched enough of him. However, he's smaller than Lamb and not as long.

Baker will be better than Mulder as a player here. He'll be a solid contributor and solid scorer if he decides to come here. Like Lamb, I don't see him playing significantly in the NBA.

I think the thing that impresses me most about Baker is that he's playing against top notch competition. I saw where he dropped like 30 against Chino Hills.

The same chino hills that lets teams shoot layups so they can heave it down the floor for LeMelo to cherry pick buckets? Gotcha.

They're a top 10 team nationally regardless of what narrative you draw from a social media sensation video. And the video below is last year when they had Lonzo.

That kid has great range and can shoot it from the bounce as well as being a spot up shooter. Also loved seeing him beat guys with his moves and cutting to the basket. Seems to handle the ball very well too. Saw no defensive highlights so that could be a question mark as some others have mentioned but we will also have some depth inside next year that can help out a lot more than what we've seen the past couple of years. He's smaller but, if memory serves me right, there seems to have been a small guy people doubted recently at UK that did pretty well. Different position but still . . . Love to add Baker to the roster, get it done Cal.

Here is his evaluation from Scout, the best one I could find. Also, 247 had two recruiting guys move their Crystal Ball to us yesterday, they are the only two to project leaving us at 100% there(because we know the Crystal ball is always accurate lol)

Evaluation
Baker is a quickly improving shooting guard who will be able to play some point guard at the next level. His best attribute is his shooting ability; he can really knock down shots off catch and pull from both midrange and three. He's more prone to score with his jumper than attacking the basket, but he will find the open lane to the rim if it's there. He's more two than one but his handle has improved some and he's a good passer. He's a hard worker who has made strides over the last couple of years. He projects as a productive Pac-12 player.
Strengths
  • 3-Point Range
  • Jump Shot
  • Length
  • Rate of Improvement
Areas to Improve
  • Ballhandling
  • Body Control

Lighten up, Francis, I'm on your side. I'm just saying that Chino is not known for their defense. And I'm LMAO at the video 'evidence' you provided, citing Lonzo's great D. Take a look at his great effort at the 49 second mark. He almost put his hand up on defense as he ran right by Baker [roll][roll][roll]

That being said, Baker is a great shooter, and I'd LOVE to have him.

Wait, what? You watched his video 3 times and you think he might be a lefty? You might want to go back and watch it 3 more times.... [roll][roll][roll]

Thanks for the encouragement! Just sharing what I saw from the video. He could go either way pretty effortlessly. That's why I said he COULD be. Just a guess. Thanks again for your encouragement! Don't share often but thanks for the encouragement again!

I do not expect any of these late spring guards to do much next year. Maybe a spot 3 pt shooter here and there, if they do offer much they will certainly be outplaying their rankings.

Well we've had more than our
share of kids who underplayed their rankings.
IMO Cal is not recruiting these guards to sit them. He's not looking at them as guys who will contribute in years 3/4.

AS for Johnson from Pitt. Not your traditional grad transfer who played somewhere 3 years and wants 1 year at a big time school. He's really a guy who wants to transfer and just has the option to not have to sit out a year because he has graduated. Maybe the first of this kind. NCAA might frown on it especially if he were to select UK.

I know Cal says he wouldn't do it again, but get 2/3 of these guys and play the platoon again.
With not too many folks likely leaving after next year he could just bring in 2/3 studs and have a great shot in 2019. Would love to see the platoon again. With not a lot of shooting, use the platoon and defense to wear opponents down.

Speed is more important than size at guard in college basketball IMO.

A lot of teams have won the title in college basketball without having a huge back court. UL, Uconn, Duke most recently.

Pay no attention. Some people forget it's a message board for basketball discussion. It's not like we get to see these kids we recruit in person. So, video is all we have a lot of times. Pay no attention to some of these idiots. I thought your post was spot on to what I had seen.
