Jay Williams sends message to Kentucky fans over Cooper Flagg

Really stupid take by him.

Comparing ESPN to NIKE is nuts.

Nike is a shoe company. They sell shoes and clothing. They market players to sell shoes.

ESPN is an entertainment Network. They sell entertainment.

Wild to hear someone at ESPN openly say they market Duke players.

Hey Jay.

Looks like UK beat Duke the other night, unfortunately. (That's a dig at when he said that it looked like we were gonna win during a tourney game- I lost what little respect I had for him at that point.)

And ....

ESPN only sells Yankees/Red Sox/Dodgers, Ohtani, Judge, etc......for baseball. And look at baseball fan bases...shrinking across all kinds of markets

ESPN always has a Cowboys fanboy or hater on their talk shows....for NFL

ESPN Lebron fest has been going on for eons for NBA

ESPN has always sold Duke before and will after Cooper Flag...

ESPN is a narrative company,,,,left the hardcore fan of respective sports decades ago. So Jay is right to a point....ESPN is a quasi advertising deal. So if all they want to do is show highlights of a handful of dude that "sell the sport"...so be it. But don't rant at fans that clap back at BS sports analysis....ESPN does not do that anymore.

Between Grant Hill as director of USA basketball, ESPN by Williams admission, Nike with a building dedicated to Coach K Duke has a huge recruiting advantage.

LOL--I mean....Jay Williams would be surprised to know how many Duke alums/coaches and ex coaches can't stand him. Heard everything from he's a pathological liar to fraud of a human to self promoting prick from DUKE people. Not general people in the industry. Andrew Slater can tell some stories about Jay and also KAT so it must be a Metuchen thing from Jersey. LOL

I have no issue with Cooper Flagg. He plays hard. Talented kid, it's good for the sport to have great talented guys every year. Duke is a brand that doesn't need to promote one guy and with all the Media Mafia they have-let's face it we're used to it by now. It was a big win for Mark Pope and just the psyche of the Kentucky fanbase as they've been accustomed to hearing that BS Cal's spewing about the Baylor loss to his Arkansas followers after EVERY big game loss that was becoming the norm. Non conference didn't matter. Early season Conference didn't matter. Conference Tournaments didn't matter. Nothing mattered except what we were told mattered by the guy losing games. "The Process"--which is funny because the 2 men who used that phrase the most didn't lose much and were always prepared and a step ahead of the game (Saban and Belichick).

So if he followed the sport he'd realize WHY UK fans are excited and basking in the win. Also those who don't follow things and realize the dominance of voice in the sport from Duke and control in general with Silver/Grant Hill running the NBA/USA Basketball are starting to get sick of hearing about one guy from a team that is always highlighted, its going to make sense. At least Jay is back covering CBB after his attempts to try about 100 different things and backstab many people along the way. Evil Knievel he wasn't.

I don't get the insult. Cooper was as good as advertised.
And (for a change) Dook's star was not a shmuck.

Fact is, we all measured our Team by Saturday's game.
We battled and defeated Dook and Coop.
Coach Pope + Team + Fans (like me) are smiling.

P.S. - I especially enjoyed Scheyer running out of Time Outs.

I don't like it but it's not crazy. ESPN and other networks want viewership and advertising. They promote certain players and narratives to try and create interest in the games. They are selling stuff just like the shoe companies are. It's just a different product.

I mean.....that's what five titles will do for you. Imagine if Rupp was round and had his four titles today. He would have a lot of influence.

It also doesn't hurt Duke has produced some decent NBA talent in Hill and Reddick (who's coaching the Lakers for goodness sakes)

This is why I hate when people down play the Duke hate/rivalry. They are one of the BIGGEST threats to us in CBB. They have money, they have NBA presence, they have influence.

He’s trying to act like a media insider and give us the lay of the land so we can know how the business works. The entire time I was thinking he shouldn’t be doing this and he’ll be in the next round of people cut from ESPN. Why fight your audience? Just ignore it and move on.

".. Oh and BBN, I drive a car now, so no chance I smash my head into CTE-land riding a motorcycle anymore!"

What a moronic take. These Duke-players-turned-analysts really need to be addressed by ESPN and the sport itself. Because it's not like Duke beat Marist. The post game media on this game should be been a quick 10 seconds on Flagg, and then the REST OF THE TALKING POINTS should have been on Mark Pope and what UK has going forward... because that is a MUCH bigger story than what a One-and-Done 17 year old did in a losing effort.

I don’t care what espn or any of their talking heads say, only one thing matters to me from Tuesday night:

77-72 Cats

I wonder how much they promote him if another team hurts him and he is out for a significant period of time? I hope it doesn’t happen but I think other teams will have an opportunity to pound him on drives to the hole.

Well that explains, definitively once and for always, many of the non-UK centered headlines after UK's big win (vs Dook's excuses for a loss)...

All of this is why I, and many others, have quit watching ESPN at all unless Kentucky is playing. And we have the privilege to turn off the TV volume and listen to Tom Leach and Goose.
Exactly. I remember the early days of ESPN. It was great. But I haven't watched a single thing on that network other than a UK game or the occasional Bengal game in well over 20 years.

Maybe I'm biased because he's a Dukie, but I'm not seeing the hype. Don't get me wrong it is impressive for a 17 year old to compete right away, but he he was under 50% FG% and only made one of his five 3s. I'm sure he'll be good and probably be an NBA level player but instant #1 pick hype I didn't see.
