SAINT CHARLES, MO — Among the more interesting prospects to grace the field at Lindenwood University's Hunter Stadium in St. Charles on Friday was defensive end and edge defender
Jamond Mathis
.
The 6'3, 220-pound rangy and athletic Class of 2023 prospect hails from St. Charles (Mo.) Duchesne, and Cats Illustrated was eager to scout him because of an offer from Kentucky that he received a few months ago.
Arkansas State offered Mathis after Kentucky, and Colorado followed with an offer of its own two weeks ago. So Mathis' recruitment is heating up. But UK's Frank Buffano got a foot in the door early and Kentucky's offer, his first, made a huge impact.
"A couple of months ago, right after the season Coach Buff called me. Best day of my life," Mathis said. "He said that he liked that I was a hybrid. I could be multiple positions. He just came and told me Kentucky was a great home. It's more than football. It's better for longevity and helping your life for a long time."
There are at least three schools on Mathis' mind that he would like to visit this summer.
"I plan on going to Kentucky, Oklahoma State, I want to go to Ohio State, places like that. I'm still looking," Mathis said.
The Ohio State visit isn't surprising because Mathis said the Buckeyes were his favorite program growing up.
What are his thoughts on Kentucky going into that visit?
"Actually, Kentucky, I feel like it's great spot. It seems like it could be home. It's a nice place," he said.
The hybrid pitch is not unique to Kentucky. Other schools are recruiting him Mathis as a player who could line up at outside linebacker or defensive end.
Mathis posted 15 sacks, more than 40 tackles, and 500 yards rushing on offense.
"I've got a motor. I'm always going. I'm always working," Mathis said.
"A place I can call home. A place that brings more than football. I want to major in business and I'm looking for something that's going to help me long term," he said.
