Is Murray the worst defensive guard we've had since Cal got here?

I don't get that he's bad defensively. I guess I haven't zeroed in on it, but he can't be that bad.

Well you are correct. He does a lot of things well. The other poster was raising the point that he plays back on his man, particularly out front and he does not move laterally quickly enough to block penetration into the paint. I've seen this myself and frankly it doesn't happen as frequently so I think its a reaction time issue as opposed to lack of quickness. He doesn't want to fall for the fake. His interior defense has improved and his weak side help (rotation or whatever you like to call it) is better. Like most shooters, he seems to be able to anticipate the ball for rebounding.

He's much better. He does give up that lane too easily and too often, however. I'll also add that this has led to fouls as folks try to help out and end up reaching and swiping at shots in an attempt to block them. That's on the helper though. Must defend straight up at the goal.

I couldn't imagine how bad this team would be without oue best scorer in Murray.... Sure he isn't a good defender yet but seriously this team would be absolutely horrible without him and he is getting the Harrison Treatment which is ridiculous....

Seriously, its James Young & its not even close. He was dreadful.
For those that need a trip down memory lane...James Young was by far the worst, followed by Booker and even put Doron Lamb as a Fr worse than Murray. Murray gets a fair amount of steals and rebounds well for a guard.

Remember this by James Young in NCAA
- Wichita St Ron Baker 20 pts
- Luke Hancock 19 pts
- Michigan Nick Stauskas 24 pts
- Wisconsin Sam Decker 15 pts

Granted that entire team played bad help defense (Randle was pretty bad defensive player) but James was in a league of his own in getting burnt like toast night in and night out.

For anyone following the celtics, how much has young improved since being a pro?

I have never seen a player that after every Kentucky Loss fans love to point the finger at for the loss. Murray is not the problem and right now if we didn't land Murray in the late spring signing I don't know where this Kentucky team would be right now. Ulis and Murray average 20ppg and of course Ulis gets his 8-10 assists a game but if you look at Murray stats he has been dishing out assists and grabbing 7 or 8 rpg. The fans don't seem to understand if we didn't land Murray this team right now would probably be 6-16 instead of 16-6. Murray and Ulis score 40-45 ppg, dish out assists, and haul in double digits in rebounds a game.

Don't really understand all the Murray hate. Don't think he was the primary defender on Selden or Punter. If he was, that is on Cal as it should have been Briscoe. Does he have lapses? Absolutely. Most freshman do. What I would like is for some of the guys who don't contribute anything on either end to step up defensively.

Our guards this season also don't have the benefit of 6'10''-7' rim protector behind them. They have more pressure than any other team in the Cal era to not make a defending mistake.

Exactly right. The guards on this team are being asked to carry a far heavier load than any other set of guards in the Cal era, simply because this year's bigs aren't up to the task.

In past years, plenty of backcourt defensive errors got covered up by the recovery and help of guys like AD and WCS, but that ain't happening at all this year.

I Have griped about Murray's D all year especially in some of the threads dogging willis for his D I argued Murray is the worst defender on this team. He continuously takes the wrong angle and gives the driver his hip which results in him getting blown by and then when is playing decent D he manages to have a complete mental lapse and leaves somebody wide open. Happened three times last night once UT didnt take advantage of but the guy was under the bucket all alone .

Murray averages 17.55 points, shoots 42% and 36% from 2/3, and averages almost 5 rebounds a game and 2.5 assists a game and people are saying he is not living up to expectations? Yeah, he sucks at D a lot, but so did Young and Booker. He's not the problem, the problem is we are devoid of any other frosh that live up to expectations.

Until last night I've never seen anyone bitch about murrays defense. he had some breakdowns last night but there are a few others(not naming names) who are consistently worse than him. He didn't give up a 21 point lead himself it took a gigantic team failure to do so which includes a few others

I guarantee the Murray love thread will be slobbed on if he goes for 25 against fla and has a few defensive plays then we can pin this Jamal black hole defensiveless useless worst defender under cal Murray thread at the top. My god we have some of the most stupid posters in the world. I'm sure cut nets is laughing at some of the moronic things people are saying about our future lottery pick and 1a or 1b best player on the team.

Great 17th post keep up the good work you will be changing screen names again in no time

Murray has the benefit of playing on a team void of shooters. That's why his defensive leash is longer than some in the past.

He's worse than James Young and that's pretty bad.

Is this a joke? Murray can be bad but Young was one of the worst defenders at UK in the last 15 years or so. Murray has had some games where he played well defensively, James Young couldn't guard some of us posting on this forum right now. And I loved James Young. Great scorer but his D was not pretty.

Listen you b**ch wannabe I had over 20,000 posts and been with this board since it was on AOL. All with this screen name during one of the transitions to rivals it reset for some reason. I haven't been round much the past 5 yrs mainly because of whiny postcounters such as yourself who have only been around since 2010. My guess is your probably a 12 year old little squeaker who can barely remember before Cal.

That kind of talk is unchristian and unfriendly im offended and also amazed you reach the 20,000 post mark. Does your modem still work for aol so you can talk with dudes all day still? I'm assuming not since it seems your a bit testy and the stocked pond of fish is slowly drying up lol and their not biting for you anymore. Keep fighting the good fight! That guy you dream of bringing home to meet the family will come along soon. Post in peace

Or at least the worst who plays significant minutes? Cal's always been steadfast about the importance of defense and how you have to defend or he "can't play you"... but it seems those standards haven't applied to Murray this season. Even in the last two games I've lost track of all the egregious mistakes he makes defensively.

Worst part is half of them aren't even because he's slow-footed or just not big enough, they're mental errors. The Selden 3 which gave Kansas the lead in the last minute was especially laughable... you could see it developing for a good 5-10 seconds and Murray just had no clue what was happening.

I understand this team needs scoring, and the bench options we do have aren't exactly enticing... but at what point does Cal do something?
Well if you lost track of all his mistakes, then you are no longer the official record keeper.

I just wonder what the hell reason could there possibly be to start garbage like this?? who would benefit from this crap?? maybe a bitter, closet, UL fan, I really don't understand.

I feel like he tries. He puts in energy and moves his feet. Sure he could improve and some rim protection would really mask his deficiencies. That said, as long as he is being efficient in offense and at least working hard on defence,I will take it.
