High level athletes working as a complete unit on the Memphis side, particularly defense. Swarming the ball every decent chance given.
Think I may lose a lil money a I've got uconn -9

UCONN is not playing well what so ever but only down 4 as I type. They look a step slow on both ends of the court. Not sure if that is jetlag or maybe just a little too much fun before the games began. We will see.

Not sure. However, I hope UConn gets their asses handed to them! Can’t stand UConn.
Feel the same about a Penny coached team. So if the volcano could erupt at mid court and put a stop to having to watch this I would be happy. Joke aside, I would rather Penny lose every game by 100 points but it is something the way they are doing UCONN. UCONN does not look together as much as UK does and they have players from last year, correct?

They do have returning players. I hate Memphis, too, but I hate UConn more. Lmao

Hurley has been crying his eyes out the entire game.

In fact, the last time I’ve seen a coach berate and curse the officials this badly… (I was lip-reading) was Coach K.

Refreshing approach all around having Pope as our coach.
I wanted UK to go after Hurley once Cal left. After experiencing Pope so far this year and watching Hurley's antics this game, I'm so glad I didn't get what I wanted. Pope is such a breath of fresh air.

I guess time will tell but memphis is allowed to play physical defense and refs arent pampering UConn like the past 2 years but if it continues maybe thats the sign the NCAA wont just hand them another title like the last 2 years .

Glad we got Butler instead of Mahaney. Much better pg athletically and defensively.
Same! Was just coming here to call him a poor man’s Kerr Kriisa. Butler was our first guy regardless though, Mahaney would’ve been in Kriisa’s role. He would’ve done fine in that role I think, but I prefer Kerr.

Butler is also a better shooter we are talking about Brea and Jaxson but butler rarely misses from the 3 great team player

Love sharing some fandom hatred. Makes the world go round!
I love to hate Memphis and Lil Penny but his teams always play great defense and in your face. You better be physical and go right at them. They believe that the officials won’t call them all. I expect UConn to get a lot of calls in the second half. I hope Memphis is held scoreless in the second half!

It is very early in the season. Early grade on Pope and who he wanted has to be a solid A to almost an A+. Glad Pope did not pay what Osobor was wanting. Even if he is a beast.
Williams is and odd center. Shoots most his shots from below the rim. But has defense and rebounding down fairly good. He is just so strong he wares out other bigs. As far as out guards go, I will keep what Pope has brought in over most other players. Lanier is playing good but is not sharing the ball like our guards.

Will be interested if Hurley sticks with starting lineup-his backups at C (Reed Jr) & Stewart at Forward gave them life. Also think it looked like a game between teams where one team (Memphis) had played a tougher schedule going into this event and other played cupcakes. The fouling early in Half is an example of facing elite athleticism/big time players. I'd actually feel good if I were a UConn fan seeing they got this game tied with 3 guys on bench with foul trouble and you got to see how Reed Jr would respond to a big game.

UConn is a different team then how they prefer to play--smaller guards this year and it's interesting they landed Mahaney. With he/Diarra they are small--what made them so tough the last 2 yrs was the length at guard--Jackson, Newton, Spencer, Castle and then the difference maker in Clingan who was the weapon nobody could handle. For the poster who said they got all the calls-I mean you don't win 12 NCAA games by double digits due to officiating. Their team last year is one of the best in CBB history and hate them all you want, that's just reality. 2 yrs ago they took advantage of a bad field and no elite teams and were playing well at right time but refs don't win those games by 10+

Memphis has a nice shooting team and more rhythm to their game. Like how they scheduled going into the Tournament-played UNC/Bama in Exhibition and Missouri, among opening games. That's helped them IMO. Like the improvement Hunter has shown with jumper. Haggerty is a great pickup for them and Dainja is in best shape of his life.

If I were UConn, I'd go Diarra, Stewart, Karaban, McNeely and Reed-but that's why I am a HS assistant and Hurley is paid the big $.

Karaban is really looking a step slow. I bet Duke would have a field day against the Huskies

Mahaney is why you take a long look at shooting statistics before you just bring a guy over to be your sniper. He was always more of a volume scorer, and his efficiency stats were not good. Preferred Brea over him 7/7 days a week.

It's still very early, and Hurley is the type of guy who shouldn't be counted out.. but this current Uconn team, is not good enough yet to contend for the 3-peat.

FOUR 300 KP schools in a row, (and not all of them did Uconn play super well, 3 of these opponents were within 5 towards the end half), and now down 10 to unranked Memphis. This isn't a jinx thread, as I'm sure Uconn will win.. but I think what my Uconn friends said was true: this might be more of a gap year for them.

Memphis and UK showing the value of forming a team of experienced older players from the portal. Maybe 2-3 good freshmen but no more.

UConn is not very good this year.
