Is it time to be concerned about Liam Coen returning next year?

I think it will come down to if Liam thinks he is ready for the job, he will take it.

Liam has been very honest and forthcoming this past year in discussing his struggles in adapting to calling the plays and adjusting to make the right calls at times due to the lack of experience in play calling.

He also put together several outstanding game plans against some elite SEC defenses.

This guy is a heck of a coach with a fantastic future. If we are blessed to keep him another year it will be a bonus.

If not, then we can only say thanks Liam for being a Cat and for dragging our offense into the 21st. Century.

The door should always be open for this guy to come back to UK if/when he does decide to move up in the coaching ranks. He should NEVER be forced to make that decision based on salary unless it is for a HC job somewhere else.

If Liam Coen leaves for a similar job for a little more money, unless there is a huge upside potential for his future, then Mitch needs to leave with him.

You just don't let a future superstar offensive coach leave over salary alone if you are serious about playing competitive football in the SEC.

Guys like Coen are rarer than hens teeth and in great demand at the highest levels of the game. We should do everything, and I do mean everything in our power to keep him here if that is a possibility. Even if it means naming him Associate HC and paying him half what Stoops gets paid.

I gotta say, when you have ties to one of the best NFL teams, and you're a college OC, it doesn't matter what team you are the OC for(including Bama), you are making that move for your career.
Did McVay officially offer him the job? LC is ready for this move given his previous experience there.

The Rams have an OC.

I found it interesting that Matt House returned to college football after reportedly leaving for the NFL to have more family time and Ole Miss just lost DC Kiffin back to the NFL for family time reasons. Having a new born, the OC job in the NFL, if you can get it, may be the better family gig. Coen did not make his name, however, with the Rams. He made his name directing UK in 2021. He probably receives more limelight for his career by staying with UK and having a top offense.

I've heard House was promised he wouldn't have to do much recruiting travel

We’re getting an extra few million from
The SEC to cover for Covid.

He’s worth the damn money, and it would make a national splash to give him 2.5 to 3.5 million for a year or three.
You would have to bump everyone up I think but as I mentioned earlier, I’m fine with that to keep things rolling.

This cost of living calculator suggests that a $1 mil salary in Lexington compares to a $3+ mil salary in San Fran.

About a decade ago I was offered a new job in a major market city. The job paid just slightly more than I was already making but cost of living was twice what it was where I was living at the time. I accepted the job without hesitating and it was the best decision I've made. Why would I take a job that required moving to a high cost of living area? Simply put it was a better job. More prestigious company. Greater prestige in the industry. More long term opportunities. Why am I telling you this? It's the same thing that will happen with Coen. If he's offered the Rams OC job a lot of things will go into the decision. Cost of living will not be one of them. At that level of income CoL is not a factor. He will take being slightly less of a millionaire if it moves him significantly up the ladder. If he is offered the Rams OC spot, he will take it. From what we are hearing from the Rams insiders, Coen will not be the front runner however. We do have that going for us.

No matter what happens, Stoops has generally made great hires. Our system has been fine, we've just not had a decent QB for whatever reason. A good QB hides a lot of flaws in any system.

This is true, but it is the old chicken and egg analogy. Until Coen came, we were never going to get a decent QB because no decent QB is going to play on a team where he only gets to hand the ball off, or has to run for his life on passing plays, or worse yet, has to keep the ball and become a runner if he is not built for that.

We could not get a good passing QB because we didn't pass the ball enough, and we couldn't pass the ball more because we didn't have a decent QB.

Coen, Levis, and Robinson broke that cursed cycle, now it is up to CMS and Mitch to prevent it from ever happening again, whatever it takes. This is a big money issue going forward for this football program and even bigger about being relevant in the SEC in the future.

With top head coaches now looking at 10m a year salaries that might be the norm for top coordinators soon, he's a good coach, but I don't know if he is worth that kind of money. I think he deserves to be on the top level of coordinators, 1.25 to 1.75 range.

Well said! He did struggle at times and had me scratching my head and yelling at TV a few times just like with past coordiantors on some our play calls in games, but I never got mad at him because he was so up front and honest about learning and growing into the role.

He was even really contrite and you could tell felt bad a couple of times post game, even after we won because he was down on himself for not calling a better game.

Just love his attitude though and you can tell he's really smart and just needed to work through the live game action some, like a new sports anchor who is nervous at first before setting in on camera.

Thats why I'm crossing my fingers we can keep him at least one more year because I think he comes into next year with a whole new confidence in himself year two. Not to mention the weapons we'll have.

So funny people on this board ( and this board alone) so worried about Coen leaving for the Rams, when the talk & rumors among real sports journalists this weekend is McVey might win Super Bowl then retire to relax & do TV for a couple yrs

I read it as him answering a long term question, not so much what he was going to do on Monday. He plans to at some point slow down and spend time with family. I don’t think he has started a family yet, not 💯, but I don’t think he has.

Scheffter just tweeted coen one of the leading candidates for rams o.c. Hope he’s wrong but he’s well connected

Of course he is. I want coen to stay as long as possible but this is just where it is. Hopefully they'll hire from within, he'll stay another year, then be in position to make an even bigger jump.

Other than head coaches, only a handful of people out there left that can coach this system. Coen is one of those few.

Imo the best thing we have going for us is that going there, coen wouldn't actually be running the offense. Here he is the man. The only question is does that make a difference to the NFL when they need head coaches? Unfortunately it probably does.

ESPN had a story yesterday on their NFL page about McVay where he pretty much implied if he won a Super Bowl he'd quit coaching to spend more time with his family and go the Jon Gruden route into the broadcast booth. If McVay wins, retires, then I would be surprised if the next staff would want Coen relative to other options.

They're talking about it on 680 in Louisville right now.

I'd say Stoops is well aware of this whole situation and has a plan in mind for whatever scenario that may arise. I imagine Monday will be an interesting day.

Personally I think he gave his word to the players specifically Levis he would be back

That Shifty Schefter report names 3 candidates, I internal 2 external. McVey previously has promoted internally. Yet it is being spun on social media that Coen is the #1 target, pure misinformation.

I sure hope Coen stays we need some consistency in building the offense. What Coen built just in a years time would be great if he could build off of it even if he stays just 3-4 more years. I eventually think he gets a head coaching gig if he continues to build off of what happened this past season.

Rock, how we feeling about coen staying, and possible replacements? Do we just promote Woodward from within? Thanks

This is what we don't need. If this happens, definitely cause for concern.

Looks like the other guy they hired might end up being qb coach/passing game coordinator

What is with the air of panic on this board about Coen? This is now two weeks of scramble and doom. Relax. Breath.
I know some have been antsy basically as soon as Coen started having success. To me, these openings are a little different, just because Coen has relationships with these guys.

We just hired an O line coach from the same system folks, part of the Shanahan tree. Stay or go, this is the UK offense going forward.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he left, but this can be an attractive destination to other NFL position coaches with bright futures. You don’t want an OC for only one year obviously, but we can find someone with a similar system.
