Coach Popes post game presser seemed to deflect away from giving any information when asked. I thought he mentioned having transparency with the program in his opening speech day one. Cal hadn’t seen his injured players to give updates.

No he didn’t. He specifically told you “I don’t think I can say. It’s Lamont’s stuff”….aka the individual has medical privacy rights.

how transparent must it be for him when it comes to injuries? Respecting one's medical privacy is much more than just smart and wise. iT'S THE RIGHT WAY TO BE. I am fine with him and everything he's done to this point. I could ask questions on why he has done some things, but by and large, he knows what he is doing and knows his faults and flaws better than I ever would as coach.

I hope Kentucky fans can put a little more understanding in the circumstances in totality of this season before being too harsh , critical , or negative towards Coach Mark Pope. He sure doesn't deserve some of the things that have already been said.

Popes been doing an amazing job. Dudes been lights out from day one. Only thing I need to see from him is recruiting. If he can get that where it needs to be, he will win big. That’s no certainty though. I believe he will.

I am not saying he hasn’t had some head scratchers in terms of rotations, decisions, in game adjustments/lack of - that’s going to happen to all coaches. But he’s done an awesome job across the board. In general, he knows what he’s doing and he’s doing it very well under the circumstances.

When they were amateurs, I didn’t have a problem with the lack of transparency. Now that they are paid professionals, I feel it’s a little silly. I understand privacy rights, but it’s not like Butler has testicular cancer. He’s not having his gender re-assigned. He has a SPORTS INJURY that was caused by playing basketball. What is the harm in saying “Lamont has a torn labrum that will require surgery” ? Is Pope thinking that just coming out and saying it will potentially hurt our seeding or something?

HIPPA privacy law went into effect April 2003 but began in 1996..and morphed into what it is. I don't think we've had the kinds of injury updates since then, that we'd like to get. Doesn't matter because it's law now and has been for a long time. It could be disclosed but 1st amendment rights would pre-empt contract terms and leave universities in tons of lawsuits. It is what it is.

I cherish the day you can make a post that isn't political or nonsensical, and strictly about the Cats.

The days of " I haven't seen him" or "he is about 83%" are gone but we are still haunted by them.
Years of is he injured or protecting his draft status has taken a toll on the fanbase. We are still
recovering. All we need or should expect to know comes down to, is player A,B, or C going to
play in the upcoming game?

There is transparency, but then there are also LEGAL restrictions as to how transparent you can be about someone's medical information.

It’s Lamont Butler’s news to tell. Not Coach Pope. Just as if you had an injury or illness. If you want to tell the world, go ahead. But your boss has no business telling anyone.

While it could just be a nature of the injury thing, I don’t think it’s crazy to give a very rough expectation of return.

“Lamont’s dealing with a shoulder thing. Trying to let it heal on its own, he’s working every day rehabbing it. Hopefully he’s in a place to give it a go within the next few weeks.”

That doesn’t sound like too much to ask for. The timing of return component has been no better under Pope and honestly I did expect it to be.

I wish he could be a bit more clear. Have they even said what part of him is injured? I know I've seen shoulder here and there but I don't know if it was ever confirmed.

And yes, it's a bit odd considering in the pros they do list: Player A- FOOT- PROBABLE or Player B- KNEE- OUT. With sports betting becoming more legalized, I bet this becomes the norm in college. Most we get is Player A- OUT or PROBABLE.

It's a bit frustrating. But I don't think Pope is hiding anything. Just being respectful. I think some of our fans want to know out of genuine concern. But some just want to question a player's toughness.

I want to know out of curiosity but I don't need to know that information and neither the university nor team needs me to know.

Hmmmmm…..4 weeks left in the regular season. Clocks ticking. Will be a moot point soon, not worth the time. Might be there already.

My assumption is that part of the reason (along with other things mentioned in this thread) Pope hasn't even given a rough timeline for Butler b/c that kinda backfired w/Kriisa. If I am not mistaken, the date he initially said for Kerr has already passed, and Kerr still isn't close. Maybe just wants to avoid that again?

You might want to research HIPPA violations before you start spoutin' off

The Kriisa timeline (3 to 6 weeks) was obviously absurd nonsense from day one. Nobody returns from a broken foot in 3 weeks. 6 weeks would have been pretty miraculous to be back playing in game. I figured 8 weeks (Feb 1) would be a best case scenario, with a worst case of returning to practice after 8-12 weeks and having setbacks that keep him out for the season.

Just a prediction but I'm gonna say Kerr plays at OK on the 26th.
The fact that he's out of the boot tells me he's out of danger for reinjury.

I don't think it's outside the lines to give fans something. Maybe something like, "things are on schedule" or "probably test the shoulder out soon" or something. The actual nothingness kinda makes you think things aren't going as they had hoped.

These guys are fricken pros, not amateurs. There should be a detailed injury report with full transparency.
Them being pros or amateurs is irrelevant. The amount of information you know doesn't change when Butler will return. Pros aren't even full transparent with their injuries. Guys like Kawhi and Embiid miss tons of games without there being any transparency about their injuries.

Fans are owed zero about a players injuries specifics, especially at the college level. You all complained about this with Cal and I didn't understand it then and I don't understand it now. The amount of information the team releases publicly doesn't accelerate or slow down a guy's recovery. There are injury statuses that will tell you if a guy is questionable, etc. but that's all you're really entitled to know.

He literally said two press conferences ago, that they were working towards testing it one more time. Y’all gotta understand there are good reasons for not giving more. What if giving more details results in greater risk for the player? The SEC plays dirty.

The problem is there are often injuries that simply don't have a timeline. Like with Carr's back issues this year or Thiero's last year.

Shoulders are kind of the same depending on the injury. If Butler is going through rehab or PT to try to get him ready to play, there's no real timeline for that. It either works eventually or it doesn't. If it's a pain management thing I can see why the team wants to avoid saying that because you'd 100% have fans questioning Butler's toughness for not just playing anyway.

I've been dealing with a torn labrum in my hip for about a decade now. There are some days I can go run 5 miles like it's not injured at all, and there are other days where it feels like someone's stabbing me in the hip with a knife. There's very little rhyme or reason to it. If Butler is dealing with a labrum issue in his shoulder it could very well be the same thing for him. In that case there really wouldn't actually be a timeline or schedule to his recovery. The only real recovery is surgery, and if they're trying to avoid that it's a complete crapshoot.

There’s a reason pro coaches don’t go In depth with injuries other than “he’s out with a knee injury.”

Keeping the severity of injuries in house is smart coaching. The fans want to know. They don’t need to know and certainly aren’t entitled to know. This fanbase doesn’t do too well with that part.

Although I do have some concerns/frustrations with some things, injury reports isn't one of them. None of my business and I simply don't care. Just play who we got and play hard.

My guess is Butler has a labrum or rotator cuff tear. They’re trying to heal it naturally and at some point Butler will give it a go.
But that’s a nasty injury and I expect Butler to have surgery when the season ends.

The multi billion dollar sports betting industry call bs on this viewpoint. The fans are owed a legit injury report just like the nfl or nba. No one would hardly watch this crap if they couldn't bet on it and that's the truth. It's actually quite crooked that it isn't more transparent with all the money on the line and all the money these players are making.

Get a press pass and go tell Pope how crooked he is. I bet you’d get through to him.

Why? Does it really matter? There is a requirement that the team report the status for each player a day or so before the game and also on game day. That should be plenty of info.
Matters a ton. See my other response. It will be mandated at some point. Whether you like it or not.

If Butler gives his okay, Pope can share any information there is available. I remember reading pages of posts bashing Cal for this very same thing.

I've said this a few times since Pope was hired, but...it's only a matter of time before people realize about 80% of the complaints they had about Cal aren't Cal specific things, they're just things you complain about when you've had a coach for 15 years.

The complaints are starting about injury updates. There have been a few comments about "coach speak" in press conferences or radio shows. There have been complaints about not playing zone. Complaints about not start games well. It'll continue.

You and others are making too much of the Hippa requirements. Butler can say anything he wants about his ( basketball injury) or give Pope permission to give the info. You are violating Hippa only when the patient does not want the information known.

College athletics introduced a legit injury report this season that is just like the NFL.

The reports are released a day or two prior to games with a designation of out, doubtful, questionable or probable along with the injured body part (Example: Lamont Butler, Out - shoulder). A gameday report is also released 90 minutes prior to tip-off, just like with the NFL.

That’s all the specifics needed.
