I listened to Sean Woods this am, and it took me on a search for the foundation during Pitino Year 1

Woods did a full interview this am on KSR 'pre-show' that was fantastic, and he had Richie also during the interview I found this article that reflected what went on in Year 1 of Pitino.

A longer read by the Athletic, some bad, but a lot good, but thought you'd go back and remember that time when the foundation was being started.

Who remembers this time? Woods said it was on national TV, but I think probation kept it off the screen and being in Georgia, it was hard at the time to get any live updates.

Was the next year (1990) on TV? I don't think so, but that was such an incredible display of going beyond what you expected by a group forever linked to greatness at UK.

I think we weren’t on live TV at all in 1989-90 but the TV ban was lifted for 1990-91. I remember going to the KU game with my dad in 1991 and they made a big deal out being back on ESPN.

Was that the KU revenge game after they beat us by like 50 in Lawrence? I remember Woods having a great game then in Rupp.

Great read ! Thank you sir. To all, I refuse to subscribe to almost everything but I do subscribe to The Athletic and it’s good money spent. Very reasonable and articles like this am either worth the while.

Yes. We didn’t beat them by 50c but we got them pretty good. Woods had a great game. That was part of my formative years of becoming a diehard. Rupp was rocking that night.

I don't think they were on TV and I remember listening to that game on the radio.

I went to UK that first year, but I transferred to Emporia St. in Kansas my 2nd year (born there), and my new friends talked crap all fall in the lead-up to the rematch. I still remember all the details on my friend, Kevin's, living room as we stuck it to the Jayhawks. He bought the beer for the next week, which he had to anyway because I was underage.

When we finished that last game of the season, it was the first and only time I've ever cried over a basketball game. I was 12.

The emotion I ever had during that season was when Pitino shocked everyone when those 4 had their banners raised. It was an incredible moment and every UK team should truly understand what that team did to uphold the tradition of this program.

Truly incredible season and so many memories that will never be duplicated.

It should be a movie. There is really perfect symmetry to the 4-years of the Unforgettables. Pelphrey might have had a redshirt freshman year and Woods was a Prop 48 casualty who had to sit his freshman year due to grades but they began their Freshman year in 1988 playing #1 Duke in the Hall of Fame game and UK got blown out 80-55. None of them saw the court because they were deep on the bench. The rest of that season was the most miserable as a UK fan when we went 13-19, waiting to find out what sanctions we were going to get hit with.
The media predicted the death of UK basketball but we get Pitino, quickly rebuild, no post-season until they're seniors and their final game of their careers is the same as the first. It's Duke and they are ranked #1 again with an even better team and we play an overtime game for the ages. I still get emotional just thinking about it and where we came from and every fan who was around can tell you where they were and who they were with when that game was played.

My first year at UK was fall '89. I recall disliking the Pitino hire when they announced it. I certainly changed my tune after the season began. What a time to be a UK student.

At least a 30 for 30 eh?

i think that would be amazing & I can not believe that never occurred to me

Unless i am totally crazy there WAS a 30/30 at least being worked on -- that was about Dwight Amderson -- which surprised me when i saw it

Will try to find a link

I was wrong- not a 30/30 but still good
