Huge basketball recruiting news this weekend?

Is Friday considered the weekend? Cuz the way I'm looking at it is it has to be something else other than quickley announcing. Like other posters quickley committing wouldn't be "brace yourself" type of news so I'm getting my hopes up for some exciting news

Media tend to hype things to increase ratings and clicks.

Knowing Quickley was going to announce before he announced he was going to announce is still a scoop. It doesn't have to be earth shattering to be good information, so credit is due no matter what. Everything is old news in 90 seconds on the internet. It's why paying for information is a dying business.

Besides, if a top 10 kid committing when this place has been freaking out about next year's class is suddenly not "huge" news, then none of you have any room to complain and whine about a lack of commitments.

If all that would register in your synapses is Quickley plus Zion at midfield after we beat Florida, then I'd retire your fandom the day Cal hangs it up here.

Matt was talking about Quickley.

The kid himself said he was announcing what, a few hours after Jones said it? The credit "due" is very little.

His information and insight on Williamson and Barrett (if accurate) is a lot more worthy of "credit" than tweeting something everybody else knows. His info on those guys is NOT something everyone knows 90 seconds later.

Meaning Matt had it before it was public. Did this place know? No. He got that information from someone who knows things before they go public. He shared it. That deserves credit. It doesn't matter if he's first by two minutes. He had it before it was known.

I think there's this tendency to believe that because we eventually know things that somehow the ones who gave us that information aren't doing anything special. Just because everyone here "knows" Quickley will be a Cat doesn't mean the people who told us that months ago didn't do good work. It's "common knowledge" because someone, somewhere, shared it before it was.

So what? He shared info that anyone with absolutely no sources whatsoever could find out from the kid himself a few hours later. It deserves credit, but it doesn't deserve very much.

Of course information has to come from some point, but the "Quickley=lock to UK" talk certainly didn't start with Matt... not even close. On the other hand, he was certainly one of the first persons to definitively call Zion and Barrett to UK, especially Barrett. If he's right on those, he deserves a ton of credit. THATS a "scoop", and it'll still be a scoop even if other "insiders" jump onboard down the road.

So if Quickley had waited a week to tweet out the info it would have been a scoop?

I'm just not ever going to agree that knowing something first and telling everyone somehow "doesnt count" just because everyone only had to wait a few hours to find out.

Woj tweets NBA draft pick seconds before they happen. Those are still informative and he should get credit for them. Because it's being shared as soon as it is available to be shared.

That's what Matt did. Quickley made it known behind the scenes he was going to announce, and Matt is in the loop to find that out. He couldn't know it sooner because it wasn't available to be known.

Anyone who shares unknown information accurately deserves credit. Just because you don't think it's groundbreaking or you could have known later is a foolish argument. Because you can guarantee if he'd been wrong the same folks would be using it as proof he has no sources and can't be trusted.

I don't understand the hate for matt jones. He's got sources people.

And his information is free. And, for all the self-aggrandizement he does, he really hasn't been one to pat himself on the back for having good information over the years. Granted, for a long time it was stolen info, but still.

I understand why he's not for everyone on a personal level or why people wouldn't like the show or even the site. But a guy sharing free information is fine in my book.

Personally, I think way too much is made of who got a story first. Adrian Wojnararaoswesdskkgi made a name for himself, mostly from what I can tell, by tweeting out who a particular team was going to take in the NBA draft seconds before the commissioner announced it on the stage. I didn't see where that was any big deal, but he received much praise for it all over the internet. So, that's the world we live in. I'd much rather someone be late and right than first and wrong, but that's not where the focus is in many ways.

Anyway, having said all that - if he was hours out in front of anyone else, in this climate that's a big deal.....

I'm not saying he doesn't deserve credit, I'm just saying he doesn't deserve a ton. The kid obviously had no qualms about making it known that he's committing today. Did Jones find out an hour or so before Quickley tweeted it? Sure. Kudos for that. It still wasn't difficult information to get that only someone with unbelievable connections and sources could find out. Again, some credit for dropping it slightly earlier than the kid himself I guess, but I think his insight and information on Williamson and Barrett will be a LOT more impressive if he's right, because that's NOT information that any average joe with a twitter account could find out right away from the prospect himself.

Woj tweeting out draft picks a few seconds before they happen is cool. Woj tweeting out trade discussions that absolutely no one could have even guessed is more impressive. Duh.

You're completely ignoring the value and the prevalence of the information. Those things matter. Unless you want to explain to me why a weatherman who looks out the window and tells you it's sunny is just as impressive as one who correctly predicts what the weather will be a week from now.

No disagreement that calling two major commitments months in advance is more impressive, but it's different because that's his guess based on what he hears, not info he knows for sure. The players themselves likely haven't decided, so he can't know.

All I'm saying is that the proximity of Matt's news to the real news from IQ doesn't diminish its value or his information. Calling an announcement day isn't huge news, but that has nothing to do with the time elapsed between breaking the story and it being confirmed. It's just kind of boring news.

My point is it can only be reported when it's decided. He couldn't tell us this months in advance because Quickley hadn't decided when he'd announce then. Just like the weatherman can't tell us it's going to rain on December 9th and Woj can't tell us now that the Knicks are going to draft Mitchell Robinson next summer.

I don't know or care about Matt JONES but this is Rupp Rafters and honestly kind of tired of hearing about him either good or bad.

Think we'll just have to agree to disagree here.

Don't know who first used the word HUGE but expected news in never huge imo

I tend to view the Quickley commit as massively substantial.

Cal just convinced a top 10 point guard to attend a University that will like return two other 5 star point guards that he’ll have to compete with for major minutes – two guys who project as future NBA players and who will have a full year on Quickley in terms of system, development, etc.

Who else besides Cal can pull such off such a feat?

Some of you go out of your way to act like you really don’t understand how hard this recruiting thing is.

I can remember a time when Tubby whiffed on six point guards in one class and only landed one (Cliff Hawkins) because the kid called up Kentucky’s staff and practically begged for a scholarship. What Cal is doing is historic and some of you continue to write posts that are the equivalent of finding turds in what would have otherwise been a warm, comforting blanket.
