How one 60 year UK fan sees the program today

Antigua has NO need to learn how to recruit--he needs a COACH to teach him how the modern game is played to WIN.

Sadly, the present "coach" is not up to it.

Antigua fully knows how the modern game is won. He is often 2 or 3 steps ahead of Cal. For example, he was the first to signal for a TO in the 2014 NCAA title game. Cal never called it....

Comes off as an angry snowflake, still raw about the kneeling event. Lots of faux outrage in this paragraph.

We are officially in the same awful loop we were with the end of the Tubby era. Buckle up, folks, it only gets uglier from here...

When's the expansion draft for the Legion of Doom and the Sunshine Pumpers?

Observation about the situation UK basketball finds itself, by a 60 year supporter and FUNDER. I support this position, but did not author the insights;

"As a UK fan for over 60 years, I feel compelled to share a few perspectives on the man who has turned our beloved program into something unrecognizable. A man whose coaching career has been hall-marked by two distinctive and notable traits: a superior innate talent for marketing and salesmanship and a self-centered, profound ego…..one that mandates him to be the focus of attention and demanding unfettered loyalty. Such an extreme sense of self perhaps stems from not having a healthy, balanced identity ……who knows? Nevertheless, his career is highlighted by his having to constantly seek the limelight by making himself the center of attention…evocative of a spoiled, petulant child. Before he got to UK and was coaching in the mid- majors, he focused on being flamboyant on the court perhaps hoping his coaching persona could help him get on a sports show highlight reel now and then as a way to keep himself relevant on the national stage . It was the only way he could ever get the kind of attention that he craved. He knew he couldn’t make it to the big leagues on coaching skills alone. His controversial hiring at UK provided him with what his ego -driven, self-focused persona needed the most….an indisputable credential that he had arrived at the pinnacle of the game where he didn’t have to account to anyone. With sycophant UK fans who held him in abject idolatry and an embicilic administration that gave him a ridiculous contract that no one could justify, he became, in his own mind, bigger than Kentucky basketball itself….he was a God ….or perhaps he thought. Winning the title in 2012 with arguably the greatest player in a generation, cemented his status as the unassailable overlord of the program, and provided him a platform where the accolades were focused all on him without regard to the fans, the players, or the program. The 2015 Wisconsin game however, changed everything. He was exposed as the charlatan he is. As fans began to criticize his clear lack of in -game coaching abilities, he took on a biting, condescending attitude to those who dared question his motives or his results. His one and done recruiting philosophy revitalized his reputation for a few years until it became obvious he couldn’t win with talent either, causing him to more recently shift to a recruiting strategy which focused on acquiring transfers….a strategy which undoubtedly has proven disastrous. As the criticisms have recently mounted and he being finally laid bare as the unfettered empty suit he has always been, he took on the woke political agenda…perhaps as a way to rub it into the fans faces, while seemingly content to allow the movement to destroy Rupp’s reputation without saying a word in his defense. Rather than shouldering any of the blame for the debacle he has now turned the program into, he continues with a litany of absurd excuses which become more pathetic every day. His slovenly appearance is a reflection of and emblematic of what is now a clear indication of his lack of regard for the program and the rich heritage of UK . In a word, it is apparent he doesn’t care anymore. Without the idolatry that his ego demands, he is content merely going through the motions as the program wastes away to mediocrity .Fans in response have in large part turned off as has been recently demonstrated by the unimaginable attendance numbers at home game which sadly signifies that the generational passion for the program is now on life - support.

Folks, Kentucky basketball is at a cross-roads. Either the alumni bond together and resolve to rid the program of this insidious, legacy -destroying influence and attempt to re-establish our state birthright, or stand by in silence and watch it slip into the abyss of irrelevance. Let your voices and your dollars be heard….Kneelipari must go!"

Obviously a hater who doesn’t have a clue about basketball. You must really be a Louisville fan, because you’re sure as hell not a true Kentucky fan.

This was written by an idiot.

There are certainly worthwhile criticisms of Cal, but "he's a complete fraud who embodies fake it til you make it" is about the laziest and most superficial assessment of the situation imaginable.

He "made it" at jobs that most top coaches don't even want their assistants to take.

Effusive personal disdain for the man is one thing - if you loathe him, who can tell you you're wrong?

But it does not a compelling argument make.

Cal has his faults (like everyone else), but he's still one of the best in the game. You are only a couple of bad hires away from being Indiana. People complained about youth and the one and done, and Cal went out and took advantage of the transfer portal. Having a mixture of elite youth and experience should make us more consistent.

You need to keep in mind that this is the hardest sport to win a national championship in. You have to have some luck to win it, and the best team usually doesn't. This isn't college football, where maybe two teams in the whole country can beat Bama or Georgia. You might be the best team in basketball and still get beat by the 40th best team on a given night...The SEC getting much, much better has also made it more difficult..

I also try to keep my sports and politics separate.

It’s a huge factor. Anecdotally, everyone I know personally who hates Cal is politically right wing. They haven’t shut up about kneeling since it happened. It happened once 11 months ago and hurt nothing but feelings of people who routinely call others snowflakes. Pot meet kettle and what not.

Griping about the direction of the basketball program is completely warranted. Placing the political jabs instantly discredits the argument for anywhere from 35 to 50 percent of the fanbase.
No one is interested in what an 18 year old kid from across the country thinks when he shows up protesting racial oppression in a town he just moved to, and will leave forever in less than 12 months.

Temporary personnel, pushing politically incendiary issues is a bad combination.

I saw Billy Clyde's team play the other night, and they play the hell out of defense, and by the way he runs out of bounds plays, and mixes up his defenses, and his players play just as hard when playing a zone as they do in man to man. They also run traps from time to time when the other team is not suspecting it. When was the last time Cal played a zone, ran traps at mid court or ran an out of bounds play ?
Are you really now holding up the guy who was run out of town, as a role model?

I couldn't agree more and have been saying as much for years. Cal is a fraud and is indeed destroying this program. I too have been a fan for many years, like you. The detractors herein that denigrate you for an opinion and justify their attitudes because of your "age" is telling. These are stupid people. The fans acceptance of mediocrity will, in the long run, destroy the program. Calipari is mediocre, at best, and a snake oil salesman, not to mention a narcissist also. Ignore the detractors because they're wrong and you've got it absolutely correct, IMO. I find it laughable that they judge you and your opinion based on your age. How stupid is it to believe that youth and inexperience is a fountain of wisdom. If a person is truly a fan of the Program, they will dump any coach the moment that coach is found to be detrimental to sustaining the programs excellence. Those that claim that you are not a true fan are exactly those who are not the true fans. Very insightful and well-written post. Ignore the morons whose only contribution is to mosh in the pit and feed off the others like-minded drivel and add nothing to a reasonable conversation.

I agree. I do not understand why some people are so obsessed with the kneeling crap. How many of these white coaches (since all the ones people want are white) didn't do the same/support their primarily African American players in this?

For some reason our fans think that if they are at UK they should not be allowed to do it. It comes off one way and it is not a good look.
Racism should not be supported no matter where it is coming from. Your comment appears to say that it okay to do this due to the team being primary African American. No coaches should be doing this period.

The game has passed him by.....the last 7 years proves he ain't going to adjust....content to count his $$$ and brag about draft picks....forget the banners.
Fortunately Cal has got some good assistants back that can recruit at a high rate to make up for his coaching deficiencies.
The assistants can also work with the players one on one to develop their individual games.

Is there a cliff notes version?

Protest all you want....on YOUR time. Not while wearing and representing UK Bball.

Knock yourself out...on YOUR time.
Whose time is it when it's their life and their decision about how they want to spend it? It's THEIR life and THEIR time prior to the ball game you are paying to see played.
