How one 60 year UK fan sees the program today

Now I have a little room left there. So could possibly care less. And if that drives you insane this place must really trigger you.
Nah, but the misuse of that phrase is like fingernails on a chalkboard with me for some reason. I normally hate the English police on here but that one is beyond my ability to control myself, so I apologize before I say anything.

Cal did do just that by not standing up for Rupp last summer. Recall there were calls for Rupp's name to be removed from aa "professors" on campus. Did cal do anything to stop the talk? Nope.
Last time I checked it’s still called Rupp Arena! Don’t fight a battle that you don’t have to fight!

I think Beard is where he truly wants to be. UT is like his dream job. They are moving to the SEC. Not near as much pressure to win there as there would be at UK. GUy has proven he can coach. Freaking Texas Tech to a FF.

Just don't think he comes even if offered.
Yeah I’d go with Scott Drew if I had to pick from the current crop but Beard is a definite talent.

When this program becomes an "Us verses Them", with the us being Cal and his players and the them being the fan base, it is the beginning of the end of the "Gold Standard" of college basketball.

Hope with all my heart it NEVER becomes that. However, with all of the angst toward Cal and the program's decline, it is starting to feel that way. Hope Cal can turn it around. I am pulling HARD for him to do it!!!
I think the death spiral has already begun. I'm not sure it can be stopped. Far too many decades long, diehard fans have basically walked away. The students at UK today barely seem to care. If you lose a lot of the older fans and the kids coming up are apathetic to begin with, there is no place to go but down and down hard.

I can tell for me personally, I didn't like it at all, but the things I disliked more than that was Brooks saying what he did and Cal allowng it.
Cal is a coward for allowing that to happen in the first place and then not defending Rupp.
Disagree all you want but had you had your way UK would have become a symbol of everything wrong with the United States in the media. Maybe that’s him being a coward but to me it seems like he made the only successful move possible.

So standing for the anthem and not degrading Rupp and his name is everything wrong with this country? Am I understand you correctly?
The media in this country is pure trash. They have lower approval numbers than most everything.
Please explain.

Minus the booze and 600 victories, 1 national championship, 6 SEC championships, multiple final fours with 3 different programs, induction into the college basketball HOF, multiple top recruiting classes and on and on. Never once has Cal done anything that has embarrassed the program. Actually the exact opposite. He has been a great ambassador for the program on and off the court.
Remind us again how many wins and NCAA tournament appearances Calipari's teams have had vacated at how many different colleges? Seriously, how many?

I have never liked the Calipari hire from the word go. But like everyone else, I do not have any control over the matter. He's a terrible coach with no leadership skills, but a phenomenal promoter/huckster. I despise his one-and-done recruiting philosophy, and to me cancelling the Kentucky-Indiana basketball series is unforgivable. And there's that 6-19 thing, but whatever. I'm simply looking forward to the day he is no longer at UK.

I definitely see it as the start of a downhill path. You are exactly right about the demographics of the fan base. The low numbers in Rupp is something that NO ONE could have seen as being possible just 10 years ago, but here we are.

That's why I've said all along that the easiest and best solution is for Cal to FIX IT and for Mitch to make UK Basketball more INVITING to current and FUTURE fans.

Your or my take on the BLM situation is irrelevant. It’s how it would have been portrayed on television that I’m talking about.

What's irellevant about it? These kids pass through like water through a sieve. We fans the are here year after year.
Cal defending Rupp and his name would not have been out of order or wrong. This place is because of him. Not defending Rupp is inexcusable from Calipari.

Dumpster fire right up top of the board 😆

Partisan politics have made discussing nearly everything insufferable anymore.

I agree Cal needs to get his sh*t together on the court, but cable propaganda has nothing to do with my basketball opinions.

Cal handled it the right way in my book. Pushing back last summer would have created a massive issue. Instead they didn’t feed the fire and it kind of fizzled out.
I didn't mind Cals actions in that but I was pretty pissed at the kneeling. There were myriad ways for Cal to show support without directly spitting in the face of so many people. I prefer an apolitical basketball program. That said kneeling is about 50th on my list of complaints with Cal.

No matter how many titles he may win at UK....that will always hang over his head.

I will be sure it is remembered on every post.

It was happening everywhere though...so not like if we had Oats or Donovan they wouldn't have most likely done the same. I agree, it is far down the list and about the dumb professors and Rupp, yes if Cal or anyone had spoke out and made it a war it would have went bad nationally.

50% of the opinions in this country are not allowed. You are only allowed to speak out and say crazy stuff if you are one group of people and associated with one party. Most of us on here are smart so I do not have to get into what group and what party that is.

The major slide began after 2015. No undefeated season--no ncaaT Title--no 2nd Title--

and the once raging FIRE began to simmer and flicker, and is now almost non existent. Devoid of "Fire in the BELLY", results suffer and alternative activities have become elevated in importance, at the expense of UK men's basketball.

A LOSS becomes less despicable, a few consecutive losses just part of college b'ball "PARITY". Players BLAMED, and excuses readily utilized.

UK basketball significance ebbs, and the "GOLD Standard" loses its once amazing glitter.

I was not a fan of the kneeling incident but that was not why I am displeased with the direction of the UK basketball program under Calipari. I see the position as head coach as having the primary responsibility of coaching. Specifically in game coaching. This is an area that I have never been impressed with this coach. I've seen junior high coaches that were far superior to him.

For the administration to extend such a unsensible and lucrative lifetime contact is beyond me. They are just as much to blame for this mess as the coach himself. Time heals all wounds, but I really don't see this situation changing any time soon. I do expect that when the time for change does occur, there will be a quick and energized fan base excited to finally get over the ghosts of Christmas past. Merry Christmas to all!

It isn’t just UK fans saying this

Wow. Love how these guys just say, “He (referring to specific players) isn’t Kentucky.”

When fans say these things, we’re accused of not being true or good fans. But these dudes are not UK fans, and just making unbiased observations.

As one poster here has said a few times, it’s Oscar and a bunch of role players. Maybe TyTy becomes a stud one day, and maybe Collins one day makes the League, but the rest of players on this roster are WKU caliber guys, not UK caliber guys.

As they aptly point out, a roster full of mid-major talent and a coach who is still coaching like it’s 2005 is a bad combo.

* For those who didn’t or refuse to watch, they single out Mintz, Toppin, and Brooks as guys who just aren’t UK material, while also noting that Wheeler is a far cry from the monster PG’s we’ve had in the past. I’m sure they feel the same about Ware, Grady, and Allen.

Can't disagree with their assessment. My thinking is put the ball in TyTy's hands more, and see what Sahvir is like off the ball for more possessions. TyTy can make the three if they sag, and has enough driving ability to create for someone else, especially if he can get it over to Wheeler for a hockey assist.

As a guy who doesn’t support kneeling or faux grievances, I wish he had left that out. He will
Immediately be discredited as a partisan.
You don't support peaceful protest? Why do you hate the Constitution that gives Americans the freedom to protest? Why do you want to take away people's rights? Protesting is not partisan. I imagine you will come back back with, it's ok to protest as long as you do it my way! Save it. I don't support rioting, criminal behavior, but if you want to protest knock yourself out!

But they didn’t. It has been political for some people since the moment they kneeled. You’ve denied it a bunch but clearly you have to acknowledge it is a factor here.
Kneeling shouldn't be political. It is a form of peaceful protest. The same people who have a problem with kneeling have no problem with insurrectionists overturning a democratic election and subverting the will of the people. Yes I am a libtard

Protest all you want....on YOUR time. Not while wearing and representing UK Bball.

Knock yourself out...on YOUR time.

Everyone was doing it everywhere. Uk is not some elite program above all others as far as this social crap goes.

They should just eliminate the anthem being played or do it before the players come out. I think the kneeling was/is dumb but some of the things thar are important to me the people kneeling may think are dumb.

The Jan 6th people should have and are being punished as they should. I agree it's bs the rioters from blm protests haven't been punished. There is a big double standard in our nation.

Observation about the situation UK basketball finds itself, by a 60 year supporter and FUNDER. I support this position, but did not author the insights;

"As a UK fan for over 60 years, I feel compelled to share a few perspectives on the man who has turned our beloved program into something unrecognizable. A man whose coaching career has been hall-marked by two distinctive and notable traits: a superior innate talent for marketing and salesmanship and a self-centered, profound ego…..one that mandates him to be the focus of attention and demanding unfettered loyalty. Such an extreme sense of self perhaps stems from not having a healthy, balanced identity ……who knows? Nevertheless, his career is highlighted by his having to constantly seek the limelight by making himself the center of attention…evocative of a spoiled, petulant child. Before he got to UK and was coaching in the mid- majors, he focused on being flamboyant on the court perhaps hoping his coaching persona could help him get on a sports show highlight reel now and then as a way to keep himself relevant on the national stage . It was the only way he could ever get the kind of attention that he craved. He knew he couldn’t make it to the big leagues on coaching skills alone. His controversial hiring at UK provided him with what his ego -driven, self-focused persona needed the most….an indisputable credential that he had arrived at the pinnacle of the game where he didn’t have to account to anyone. With sycophant UK fans who held him in abject idolatry and an embicilic administration that gave him a ridiculous contract that no one could justify, he became, in his own mind, bigger than Kentucky basketball itself….he was a God ….or perhaps he thought. Winning the title in 2012 with arguably the greatest player in a generation, cemented his status as the unassailable overlord of the program, and provided him a platform where the accolades were focused all on him without regard to the fans, the players, or the program. The 2015 Wisconsin game however, changed everything. He was exposed as the charlatan he is. As fans began to criticize his clear lack of in -game coaching abilities, he took on a biting, condescending attitude to those who dared question his motives or his results. His one and done recruiting philosophy revitalized his reputation for a few years until it became obvious he couldn’t win with talent either, causing him to more recently shift to a recruiting strategy which focused on acquiring transfers….a strategy which undoubtedly has proven disastrous. As the criticisms have recently mounted and he being finally laid bare as the unfettered empty suit he has always been, he took on the woke political agenda…perhaps as a way to rub it into the fans faces, while seemingly content to allow the movement to destroy Rupp’s reputation without saying a word in his defense. Rather than shouldering any of the blame for the debacle he has now turned the program into, he continues with a litany of absurd excuses which become more pathetic every day. His slovenly appearance is a reflection of and emblematic of what is now a clear indication of his lack of regard for the program and the rich heritage of UK . In a word, it is apparent he doesn’t care anymore. Without the idolatry that his ego demands, he is content merely going through the motions as the program wastes away to mediocrity .Fans in response have in large part turned off as has been recently demonstrated by the unimaginable attendance numbers at home game which sadly signifies that the generational passion for the program is now on life - support.

Folks, Kentucky basketball is at a cross-roads. Either the alumni bond together and resolve to rid the program of this insidious, legacy -destroying influence and attempt to re-establish our state birthright, or stand by in silence and watch it slip into the abyss of irrelevance. Let your voices and your dollars be heard….Kneelipari must go!"

I concur 100%

Another 67 year old lifetime fan who grew up in Prestonsburg concurs.

Lucky for our elders who get older, as long as your drivers license doesn't expire in Ky, you don't have to take the eye test to renew your license.

Go Cats
