Holtmann fired

BCG had built 2 programs from the ground up before he was hired here. Everyone wanted to him. Arkansas did. It didn't work out but it was not a rushed or unvetted hire. He was a damn sure improvement over what we had though.
Lol

Tubby was always a solid X and O coach. He just never could get the talent at UGA and to some degree here. Cal just doesn’t have the same solidness in X and O for this newer era of ball.
Tubby was the perfect follow from Rick. Rick broker our hearts and Tubby came in, gave us a hug, won a title, and said “We’re gonna be alright”. And we were for awhile. Tubby was always gracious to fans, NEVER talked down to them and did his best on the court.

Donovan was wanted by many. But he did not return the same love.
It was stated many many times on this forum that Tubbys offense was like watching paint dry.

I won't embarrass anyone but just for fun I searched Holtmann and "search titles only" and got a good giggle.

You aren't going to embarrass anyone...sh*t man, people embarrass themselves everyday on this board.

I know I wrote a post about CH at some point last year or maybe after St. Peters. IIRC it was more about if Cal left and we couldn't get our pick of litter, who do we go after.

Is what it is. There have been great coaches fired and sh*tty coaches fired. Holtmann did some good stuff at OSU, just wasn't enough.

Holtmann mostly made the tournament but never got past the round of 32 in 5 seasons (2020 tournament cancelled) He had double digit losses in every year except year one, when he had 9 losses. After this first year, his best finish in the conference was tied for 4th. Other years he finished 5th, 5th, 8th and 13th. He was headed for another bad season this year. So, my question is: What good stuff are you referring to? Serious question!

Was ranked #1 at one pt IIRC. Took Butler to Sweet 16. 2nd in conference first year. All those things are good at OSU.

Again, appreciate the context. When I look back (which I did) at my post, in typical RR fashion, no one can read....lol. I'm not talking about you btw.

So the above "are some good things" but I agree he didn't necessarily meet expectations.

I dunno if you’re talking about me, I may have at one time but I don’t think it was recently. I’ve never been enamored with the dude. I’m more on the Oats, Drew side of things with Hurley proving to be the best possible hire as of now.

I could see a program LIKE IU, OSU or UCLA reaching out because they know Cal can recruit and they may well hope that he gets things going in a new setting. There are a LOT of worse hires such as Woodson, Holtmann, Cronin, etc.
Well Cronin has been to 2 sweet sixteens and a final 4 the last three seasons. John Calipari has ONE win in the ncaa tournament the last three seasons so………..

Hopefully one of the four will reach out to Cal but it's highly unlikely and I don't think any of the schools would be interested in him because if you can't win at Kentucky with all the resources we have there's No way you're going to win at another school. Cal is and has been in a decline for awhile now.
Do we have more resources than Ohio State?

I assumed it would happen, but AFTER the season. Maybe they are wanting to get to the candidates before UL has the official opportunity to.

I'm thinking both OSU and Michigan 😉 could reach out to Cal.
That's what I was thinking. Headstart on going after a big target before anyone else can. Is there a bigger target for them in college basketball than Calipari? Can't get much bigger with all of the retired coaches in recent years. It's either go after Cal or an up and comer. I think Cal sees the writing on the wall like Tubby did and will either retire or take the first bigger job that will come after him.

Cal would be perfect for that fanbase. Pride and arrogance personified

At first I though the whole idea of Cal to OSU was just a pipe dream. But, the more I've thought about it, the more it makes sense. Cal could go there and get their fanbase excited again, make a ton of money and restore his reputation before retiring.

I know I lost my mojo in my last job so I left and accepted another position. It was a win/win for everyone. I am currently working with a one year contract but it will definitely be extended.

Haha. I laugh at myself more than anyone. Some can’t so no need to call anyone out.
Yeah I generally think bringing up really old threads is dumb, outside of a couple instances of real stupidity or arrogance I wouldn’t do it or think it’s needed. Like NCfaninKy who bragged about his wife who turned out to be totally fake.

Cal and his staunchest supporters do not recognize that Cal is burnt out at Kentucky.

It happens to all of us. He has outstayed his welcome. He doesn't even want to be here right now, he just can't walk away from his ego and that huge paycheck. I hope he comes to his senses sooner rather than later. It is only going to get worse for everyone involved with UK basketball, fans, players, coaches, media........families.

Cal needs a fresh start somewhere and so does UK.

The problem is, and what I said in a round about way in a prior post, OSU will have to pay 33 million plus 10 million a year to find out if Cal needs a fresh start or if he is just washed up all together. I believe this is all wishful thinking, and we are stuck with him until his buyout is a little more manageable.

Oh, I agree, totally.

Cal isn't going anywhere because he has nowhere to go.

Period.
