Holtmann fired

BCG had built 2 programs from the ground up before he was hired here. Everyone wanted to him. Arkansas did. It didn't work out but it was not a rushed or unvetted hire. He was a damn sure improvement over what we had though.

How can you love Cal so much but have disdain for tubby smith?

You may say you don’t have disdain for him but anyone who classifies BCG as an improvement over Tubby has a personal vendetta against him or is just delusional.

Didn’t Matta leave there for some sort of health issue or am I crazy?
He did, but apparently he has sufficiently recovered to coach again.

I do think he has his eyes on becoming AD at Butler, and not on returning to OSU.

No he wasn’t. BCG’s best season at UK was worse than Tubby’s worst. And I say that as someone who wanted Tubby out in 2006.

also BCG took programs that were having single digits seasons and bringing them to respectable 21-25ish wins seasons. A great accomplishment but would be considered the very minimum to start at UK.

A 22 win season for Tubby was considered a bad year at UK, it was Gillespie's best season here.

You may be righ

You may be right. Pearl would liven up the big ten. His style of play would help the B10 be more watchable. The only drawback is the fact that Pearl is 64 years old. Still, a good possibility for Ohio State.
Right for some reason I always thought he’d end up back in the Midwest. I think it’s really about how ADs and presidents view him. Is he a “baggage” guy not worth the “risk” or is he exactly what a program needs and the other stuff is acceptable

Mitch wanted BCG after he beat UL in the tournament and had Edgar Sosa crying for his mommy in the postgame. I thought he was a good hire at the time though I wanted Donovan. Ten Loss Tubby was a good coach. He just didn't bring it in recruiting. I have wondered how good we would have been these last four seasons with Tubby coaching.

Yep, I’m a Butler grad and live in Indy. Matta likely will replace Barry Collier as AD in a few years. It’s known here that the succession plan is in place.

Tubby was always a solid X and O coach. He just never could get the talent at UGA and to some degree here. Cal just doesn’t have the same solidness in X and O for this newer era of ball.
Tubby was the perfect follow from Rick. Rick broker our hearts and Tubby came in, gave us a hug, won a title, and said “We’re gonna be alright”. And we were for awhile. Tubby was always gracious to fans, NEVER talked down to them and did his best on the court.

Donovan was wanted by many. But he did not return the same love.

I'm thinking both OSU and Michigan 😉 could reach out to Cal.
They could but even if he didn't have this big buyout strapped around him, he'd not leave Kentucky for either of those programs. If and when he ever leaves, and if he leaves to go coach somewhere else (I don't think he will), it would be something like UCLA or a Big East program. But again, if/when Cal leaves, it'll be retirement, not another coaching gig.

Good chance that the Indiana job might open up too. And the UCLA job too...
Hopefully one of the four will reach out to Cal but it's highly unlikely and I don't think any of the schools would be interested in him because if you can't win at Kentucky with all the resources we have there's No way you're going to win at another school. Cal is and has been in a decline for awhile now.

For the record, I'm certainly NOT trying to push Cal out the door. I'm just saying, there's some high profile jobs that will be opening this off-season, and the type of jobs that have traditionally reached out to coaches such as Cal.

I'm not going to die on any kind of limb dedicating my life to Cal, but again, I'm not pushing him out the door - certainly not before the postseason has even been played

Why do you think? He loves Cal and BCG, who have both missed the tournament, but hates Tubby who won at least one game in the tournament every year.

I think it’s petty and gross to hate any of the former coaches. With the exception of BCG and Sutton they won a title and had a ton of success. Whether they met your expectations I don’t know. And with Sutton and BCG the job was too big for them and they had demons they were wrestling with at the time. Didn’t work out.

Sometimes it’s time for a change. Sometimes a coach deserves appreciation and it can still be time to move on.

Nobody is reaching out to Cal, a 65 year old declining underachieving coach that has a 33 million dollar buyout.

This is an absolutely wild take. Tubby >>>>> BCG. I don't even know how you come up with that conclusion.

As if Billy Clyde wasn't enough to convince you then this is a perfect example of why you don't rush out and hire a guy who has a good season and a decent tournament run if you are an elite program like UK, Duke or UNC. He had one decent season at Butler and made a Sweet 16 run so OH State hired him. Since then he has won 62% of his games never advancing past the round of 32. Out of 13 seasons he had double digit losses in 11 and 9 losses in his other 2 but yet some was throwing his name around to coach here. 🤣
Sounds like Cal the last few years. Maybe Mitch can hire him and give him a lifetime contract!!!

The $33 million buyout would not be a deterrent for a program as it has no bearing. I think Cal would still be viewed as a really good hire for some programs, despite his decline here.

I could see a program LIKE IU, OSU or UCLA reaching out because they know Cal can recruit and they may well hope that he gets things going in a new setting. There are a LOT of worse hires such as Woodson, Holtmann, Cronin, etc.

Oh My God Omg GIF

I couldn't stand Tubby here but whaaaaaaaaaaaaat!

Only way BCG was better we than Tubby was that he was so bad so quick both on an off court he only lasted 2 years .

OSU will go after Pearl.

The word is:

LaMont Paris
Nate Oats
Guy from Iowa St
Sean Miller

Paris makes a lot of sense. Hearing Oats and Iowa St coach have big bouts

Paris from Ohio and coached in Big ten at a school that starts with a W and ends with sucks.

yea really hope it's Paris and sends South Carolina and their grad student roster back to the basement.

I’m not saying it will happen…just that our perception of him and fans of other programs perception of him are probably pretty different.
Pretty much every college not named UCONN, Purdue, Kansas and Houston would hire Cal if given the chance. Some people have such a deep hatred dor him on this board, it's mind blowing. I'm disappointed in his performance the past 5 years and his inability to adapt but I still realize he is better than 99% of other options.
