GYERO

I was never that high on Alvaro. In theory, a stretch 4 that can handle, pass and shoot is nice, but I just don't think his tape looks that great. Plus his visits are to Iowa, Providence and Nova (not Jay Wright's Nova). Didn't see it. Still don't. Rather keep BG. Has his warts but I like him and have seen enough flashes to give me hope.

BG leaving is the exact shit we were sick, tired, and generally FURIOUS over -- anyone who wants him gone is an idiot

Pope recruited him to develop, and I expect that he will make another nice leap next season, as he did last year. We have a Lotto guy to pick up the slack, in case anyone forgot - and who knows if we'll add another piece.

Regardless, continuity is something we've dearly missed around here.

- three more days until we have had one full year of Pope. That FLEW by

- super cool hearing the tidbits about his recruiting visits

- how TF does BYU have money to be throwing $10.5 mil at 2 guys? Is the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints footing the bill directly? Or is Steve Young?

- the political thread sure is something. People’s investments have become DECIMATED and the US is the laughing stock of the rest of the world and the ol’ political gang is all “can you believe those voting machines for Biden in 2020?”

- Not at all mad about the Robert Morris Spaniard. There’s guys who end up looking good stat wise because someone has to do it. I think he’s one of those guys.

What’s the whole uproar over Trilly Donovan and UK fans? Sounds like he was outed by UK fans?

Garrison is a development piece but the biggest issue I see with him is that he lacks basic basketball instincts. Serviceable piece and will develop certain skill sets, but lack of instincts will hold him back. You see it with his lack of awareness pertaining to shot blocking.

Will need a backup PG of some sort or do we put the ball in Jasper’s hands?

Vinyl forces you to be present and in the moment. No skipping and you take in a whole album.

And with a good speaker system it's a completely different experience than scrolling through Spotify (whose sound quality is kinda trash) through some earbuds or a laptop. There are apps like Tidal and Qobuz for lossless streaming, but to me a vinyl listening session is a much more active and enjoyable experience.

This is true.

Analog sound is absolutely different, richer/better than digital audio. Obviously nowhere near as convenient, but if listening to an entire album is how you like to consume music, it doesn’t get better than vinyl with good speakers. Pour a bourbon or have a gummy and enjoy.

This is not true.

Good.

This kid isn't responsible for his dad but his dad does seem like felon Lavar Ball, so I'm not that mad about losing a freshman who seemed destined to transfer anyway.

I've seen some calling into question whether or not that's his father. Some saying the first name is spelled differently.

A lot of people, now that CD's are history, judge digital by the sound quality they get from bluetooth streaming, which is not as good as an excellent analog setup.

Spend some money and get a dedicated DAC, like a Wiim Mini (or better), and stream from that via wifi into your home hi-fidelity stereo system, and you'll quickly realize...

And, on the analog side; this notion that tape is coming back is ridiculous. High quality tape heads, mechanisms, and even TAPE are done. They can't even legally manufacture high quality recording tape anymore, even if companies decided to start making premium quality decks again (they won't, it's not economically feasible), so forget that hype completely. A decent tape deck/mechanism hasn't been manufactured in over 35 plus years. I've refurbed a few cassette decks, and even after you change the rollers/belts etc. the heads are worn out, and you're not getting good ones again, PERIOD. It's a fad, unlike vinyl, where you can still get premium turntables/carts, etc.

I would argue nearly all modern DACs, and even those from 20 years ago, are audibly transparent.

In digital audio, the DAC is almost never the problem. The mastering is.

If the vinyl/LP version of a release sounds "better" (how is that defined?) than the digital version, it's not because analog is inherently better than digital. It's not, in any way. It's because the mastering for the digital release often includes absurd amounts of dynamic range compression to make it seem louder (and in doing so, that defeats one of the major benefits of digital, namely, its fare superior dynamic range capability).

The so-called "loudness wars" of the last 20-25 years have led to countless awful digital releases.

Now, with streaming, it gets a little more complicated. Many albums have been remastered and rereleased multiple times. Which version is the one being streamed?

And then the streaming service itself may or may not include further manipulation of the digital master before they stream it. Are they doing any level-matching from one track to the next? Are they doing any other processing before they stream the tracks?

If you don't mind buying Chinese, before they double in price, the Douk Audio A5 is a powerhouse (if you upgrade the external PS) little amplifier. And you can swap out the Opamps. for a Class D it's fire.

Interested on the turntables/carts some of you are using.

I've got the AT LPW40WN with an AT-VM95ML (replaced the rubber with cork.)

True but then you see him catch the ball in transition and finish like a 2018 Anthony Davis and you start considering ceiling. Kid has good hands, a nice touch out to 3 and a terrific assist percentage.

Maybe it's placebo, but the Wiim I purchased sounds a lot better than the older DAC's

Probably "placebo," ie, the result of sighted listening comparisons and not properly controlled (ie, double blinded). Could also be due to small level differences that you didn't account for (just a couple tenths of a dB difference can make one sound better than another. Levels must be precisely matched for comparisons to be legitimate.)

PS. Op amp swapping is nearly always a fools errand.

PS#2. Class D has come a long way (the company I worked for did an AVR with class D amps 20 to 25 years ago, but the project got canceled right before products were to hit the shelves at Best Buy). Class D amps now are often just as good as, if not better than, class A/B amps - not to mention doing so while being so much smaller and cheaper.

Shorts:

- A 40-50 year old man needs a hobby. Could be records or bourbon or baseball cards or bird watching. We need something. No need to overanalyze.

- Watching Dazed & Confused during this evening’s Dad Hour. Just an absolute classic, top 15 all-timer for me. Been watching it since I was 15 and stays great. Top 5 babes:

1. Mitchs Sister
2. Parker Posey
3. Joey Lauren Adams
4. Swingers waitress chick
5. Milla Jovanavich

- Whether we win it all or disappoint, the time between the end of basketball season and Derby has always been weird to me. I’m still hung up on hoop. Portals helped that. I guess.

- Youngest has been walking for over a month now. She’s an absolute terror. Reminds me of the sleep walking scene in Step Brothers.

- Parents is having your week ruined by *apparently* common diseases you’ve never even heard of- wtf is Fifths Disease? Welp have one with that and another with hand-foot-mouth.

- It takes completely different skillsets to parent a baby as it does a toddler/4-year-old. Like asking Malik Monk to run the point.

- I like on reality TV reunion shows how the babes show up looking like completely different people- lost 20 lbs, changed their hair, bought some tits. Example 2,863 of the fact women are F’ing crazy. What’s #1 you ask? Women who marry/date prison inmates they didnt know beforehand.

- I don’t know if you could start the first 10 minutes of a movie better than Wedding Crashers. Cinematic brilliance.

- It was funny watching Walt Clayton Jr this year. Still remember that game last year in Gainesville thinking “who TF is this dude? he’s nice.” Then he turns into Big Lots Curry under his pervy coach who was stalking just-post-grad chicks the summer before.

- Appreciate directors who make sure the families in TV/movies could feasibly be related lookswise. I bought in on the Ratliffs in White Lotus.

- Is it just me or have the number of outright POS on the roadways increased exponentially in the past year? Seems like every day on the way work I’m witnessing some crazy shit.

- I still remember my dad’s 7-footer lust in the 80s. Any 7-footer associated with UK would get him pumped. Dude was telling me Mike Scott was another Bill Walton.

- Apologies- a lot of you have been reaching out for advice lately and I’ve been slow getting back. Not trying to be arrogant but I get a lot of these life inquiries. To save everyone time, here are my Top 5 power moves in life and business right now:

1. Never answer any question at work or really in any setting on the spot. Always make one of those faces where you’re sucking air up through your cheeks and tilting your head and say, “I’m going to need a few days on this. I’m still processing everything.”

2. ANYTIME someone offers you a handshake, counter with a fistbump.

3. If you’re on a zoom call, stack your background with running trophies and medals and vague framed pics of you with tall older white men shaking hands.

4. If someone asks you anything via email or in person, interrupt the conversation as soon as possible with a “let’s connect- my calendar is up to date.” Wink and leave.

5. Post on LinkedIn 3-4x a day. Whatever TF is going through your mind that day, post it, curving it -awkwardly if need be- to your job or views on corporate life.

wcc31, I’ve been trying to tell everyone fishing and morel hunting is the perfect outlet, especially in the timeframe you mentioned. Fishing is in or reaching the spawning time and morels can only be found then.

You can get completely away from everyone and everything. The reception can be spotty, so no interruptions to the enjoyment of nature. You can bring a friend or just enjoy the day by yourself. Can indulge without being judged, with your favorite beverage or other. Even have the opportunity to catch dinner or find a nice delicacy as a bonus.

Been saving my sanity and other people’s lives for decades. Doesn’t matter if you don’t catch anything but a buzz, it’ll clear your mind and give you much needed peace and happiness.
Plus if you do something stupid, no one knows except maybe a friend. Even then you’re in a perfect place to dispose of them. Nature is cruel and accidents can happen.

Yeah but what about reel to reel ? I remember when my uncle came home from being stationed in Germany. He had a bad ass reel to reel system. I wasn't even allowed to get near it much less touch. (1975 ish).

Like a boss, I still have my Carver homes stereo rack system and big ass tower speakers. The diamond needle is still performing like a champ for the ole turntable. Played Kiss Alive 1 and Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti a few weeks ago.

Also still have my Sony Mega Bass boom box from years ago. I want my 80's back. And 90's.

Eddy Trunk on Hair Nation was talking about this very thing a couple of weeks ago when a caller was talking about it. He said something along the lines that the digital remastered leaves out some parts of the songs or something to that effect. He used a Ozzy song as an example, the original song ran about 15-20 seconds longer than the remastered version.

It suffers from the same problem. No good components made any more, and never will be. A NOS 45 minute reel of tape (at 7.5 ips, which is the slowest you want to record at) is THIRTY-ONE dollars on Amazon. 🤣

I have a vintage Sony TC-250A, mid-60's, but it would cost a FORTUNE to get refurbed, and like I said, R2R tape is outrageous (over 30 bucks to record 1 album) Tape is dead.

Some more vintage stuff I've got:

Harmon Kardon FA-3000-X (Heath Kit) receiver (mid-60's, works like a charm. All of the tubes are original)

Early 60's Garrard Type A (Shure cartridge)

That brings back memories. My Dad was very much into his stereo system. He bought a Pioneer setup, Bose 901s, but the turntable was a Garrard with a Shure cartridge. I remember Christmas 1981 he wanted, and my Mom got him, this $300 Shure magnetic cartridge that was a big deal to him. I used to love going with him into those "Playback" stereo stores in the malls (there was one at Oxmoor) and man, the smell was incredible, especially in the sealed off glass room. It was like the smell of oak, live stereo components and fresh cans of tennis balls. Intoxicating.

Seems like China won the trade war.

The market is going to go straight to the Moon on Monday.

https://thehill.com/business/5246072-trump-tariffs-exemptions-phone-semiconductor-chips-computers/

Apple seems poised to regain some of the market share it had lost in the past two weeks with the news.

Time will tell on who won the trade war but getting them to the table will be a win for Trump and this appears to be the type of olive branch that his critics, myself included, didn't think he was capable of. I'm happy to see it and think it's a sound negotiating strategy.

Well, it sure allowed me to buy cheap, if nothing else. Right or wrong, it puts his "hard line" stance in a bad light, and weakens his position in all of these upcoming trade talks (I would think, but I'm an engineer, not an economist)

Apple has to be like, "I wish you'd told us this BEFORE we flew 5 huge cargo planes full of iPhones out of there last week. LOL
