- Zags’ guards are pretty meh. Bolton can shoot - especially when you go under screens- but this is their worst backcourt in years.

- Basketball these days is about finding and exploiting matchups. Really simple when you think about it. I mean having Timme trail and then take our bigs off the dribble is smart but not exactly brilliant. Cal just doesn’t do any of that shit. Was watching Baylor before us and Drew had some ridiculous football inbounds play against the press. When’s the last time Cal did anything remotely creative?

- Timme’s killing you- why not try Wallace?

- Also, glad we exploited Timme on defense. 🤷🏻‍♂️

- One positive - at least our best lineup got some run - 22/1/12/0/34 - and if Fredrick or Reeves could hit anything, we make a game of it.

- I can’t even judge Collins or Livingston yet. I mean they’ve both looked bad but both are out of position. Collins is a rim running/rim protecting 5 with potential as a stretch 5. His lack of strength limits him but center is his position.

Livingston is a modern day 4 in every way. Would love to see him try to drive on a 4-man.

- Not buying the talent bullshit. We have talent and we’re not even lopsided, besides one too many centers.

Cal is basically 90’s Denny Crum.

Someone made the analogy to Tubby's last few years but IMO Cal's a little more like Denny Crum in the 90's. Once revolutionary with offense and a bona fide King, the game changed (3 point line) and he never adapted. The last 7 years or so of his time at UofL he had some randomly assembled teams with enough studs to get him to the 2nd weekend in March but that was always the ceiling.

Not a college basketball but a UofL fan so tifwiw.

Chad's wet dream of every 6'6 guy being a 4 cracks me up.

Where are all your examples of this? You act like the guy is Justice Winslow.

Regardless, it's never going to happen w/ Cal -- nor is it with Justin Edwards. Each have a better chance of being PG than a 4 here, you need to get over that.

I can’t recall wanting every 6’6” guy but Livingston has the build and game for it.

Plus, unlike Toppin, he’ll rebound.

I’d at least like to see it. Don’t think we have this year.

Toppin getting lucky and hitting those elbow jumpers is the worst development for this team yet. Steady dose of that BS coming. 🤬

Senior forward Jacob Toppin, after starting 2 of 12 from the fie ld, got hot on long, tough 2-point jumpers. He hit five of his last six and finished with 16 points. Afterward, Few damned him (and by extension, his friend Cal) with praise.

“Those are the epitome of what we call tough 2s,” Few said. “We usually invite those.”

So who’s going to England to see a rock fight with Michigan? Appointment viewing for sure.

I'm going to London/Paris for 8 days. Was excited about seeing the Cats in London, but as with most of these trips, it's more of an excuse to go somewhere cool. Debatable at this point whether I'll go to the game or not...but please trust 2 hours isn't going to affect my trip either way - can't wait.

Did just realize the opening games, err matches, of R16 of the World Cup will be our 1st two days in London -- seems England will likely be playing, which will make for an incredible extra bonus to experience that atmosphere...imagine the city will be on fire.

If you told me Friday night that we'd be 0 for 2 in these games I would have bet my house on it. If you had told me the basketball team would lose by more than our football team, I would have lost my house.

Didn't watch a minute of the game due to some parade preparation gymnastics stuff for my daughter. Read the last page of GYERO and decided that I may just let you all endure the pain moving forward on my behalf.

Cal is tarnishing what little bit of a legacy he had left. It's clear hes just in it to move guys on to the next level at this point. He clearly isn't trying to actually win with this bullshit he pulls.

Instead of talking about showcasing guys for the next level, maybe work on finding the best 5 guys at this level and have that happen naturally?

- Tennessee, Gonzaga, and Michigan State gave the blueprint for beating Gonzaga on offense: ball screens on their guards, get Timme in space, PnR occasionally. We did that exactly once, that I can remember: Wallace and Ware got Timme in a PnR in the middle of the key, then Ware rolled freely to the rim for a lob dunk.

Not surprised that we didn't play that way, because it's not Cal's philosophy to adjust our style of play to exploit a team's weaknesses.... but ^ is how you beat just about everybody in modern college basketball, and it continues to baffle me as to why that isn't how we play on a regular basis, especially with this personnel.

- If there was a silver lining from last night, hopefully Cal saw what happened when we finally got extended minutes from what is obviously our best lineup: Wallace/Reeves/CJ/Oscar/whoever. That lineup, with Toppin at the 4, came in at 15:22 in the 2nd half with us down 35-47, then cut it to 45-49 with 12:48 to go, when Oscar picked up his 4th foul (which effectively ended the game).

Offensive possessions with that lineup:
- Reeves lay-up
- Oscar O-reb, dunk
- Wallace 3
- Reeves 3

It's almost like spacing matters in basketball. I actually have very little faith that we'll see long-term change from this, but it was pretty plain to see.

- Also plain to see that we are better with Wallace running point than Wheeler, same as with Washington last year. BTW, in neither case is this an indictment on Wheeler, who IMO would be a very useful player in a proper offense. But you simply cannot play Wheeler with 2 other non-shooters because he has zero space to operate. He would be an electric microwave guy off the bench with Reeves/CJ/Livingston, for example... but that will never happen with the current coach.

- Defensively, we continue to be a mess. The playbook is out there for how to beat us: spread us out, get a favorable matchup on one of our wings, and go. Well-coached teams have been doing this to us for at least 4 years and we've yet to make an adjustment. Alternatively, you can also just make Oscar make a decision about which way to go on a PnR, and he'll choose wrongly about 50% of the time.

- Oscar actually did pretty well defending Timme on the block, I thought, but his defensive positioning continues to be a problem. Not new, since he had the same issues last year. And since he can't protect the rim, he really has to be in proper position to give us a chance in the half court.

Having said that, Oscar's defensive positioning is about #25 in terms of this team's biggest problems.

- Few more quick thoughts:
- we shot 21 midrange 2s, they shot 11. Again, not a new problem.
- Toppin took 18 shots, including 4 threes. Uh....?
- If not for Toppin hitting an unsustainable amount of midrange 2s and/or their guards playing like garbage, we would've lost that game by 25+.

I realize he's out of shape, but anyone notice Oscar's hands are down at his sides the entire time he's defending?

Really weird, and basic stuff. He deserved every one of his fouls (and a bunch more that were uncalled) except the first one...and were all a result of him not moving his feet or even attempting to get in real position, and not once did he have his hands up.

He's anything but a lazy dude, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now given his late start, but he needs to get in shape with the quickness.

Testament to him that he's actually looked pretty bad overall, and still put up 22/18 & 20/15 in the only two games he's played real minutes. Smh

Would be a lot more fun to find a pub in Shoreditch and watch soccer with the natives than even acknowledge there is a basketball game going on down the road.

The fanbase needs Stoops to pull an upset this weekend in the worst way. I dont care what the spread is- any win this football team gets right now against a competent 11 guys is a huge upset. And the eye test over the last month- pretty obvious Louisville is the better team. We need a win, and a post game dust up with Satterfield to get any mojo back.

It's good that the national narrative is finally noticing what some of us have for years about Cal. Tucker not quite going nuclear on him but he's tee'd up his next column after an inexcusable performance.

Staying in Covent Garden as a nice base to show lass (who's never been) some of the main shit, but Definitely plan on some extended time in Shoreditch, Camden, and other hoods this time around, particularly in the evenings.

Probably hit you w/ a meme and a message later this week.

Im sure Cal has the analytics (lolz) but if Toppin continues to possess the basketball as much as he did last night, we are going to suck. I think Toppin is fine and appreciate his jump shots last night but if he is dominating our offense we are in for a long season. Floating him out at the wing gives him no chance at creating an offensive RB or putback, its criminal.

Izzo and Few completely owned Cal in different ways. Izzo drew up plays to get his shooters open looks in half court sets and got easy baskets off on in-bounds plays. In-game, situational Xs and Os stuff. Few had his guys hustling, moving, setting screens, spacing the court, being active in general, etc. Big picture philosophy stuff. Of course, they each owned him both ways, but those stood out.

Both times we just sat there flat footed and watched in awe, like we forgot how to play basketball. Players and coaches.

Cal's big picture philosophy has been to recruit studs, get them to train for the NBA and hope they win some college games along the way. Maybe he doesn't even hope. Per Maxey, Cal doesn't care about winning. Maybe he's right.

The weird thing is, he actually adjusted part of his strategy by building a great modern roster for this season, but he's "coaching" them like they're Wall, Cousins, Davis, etc., instead of complementing this roster with actual basketball play.

Someone mentioned at the end of last season that Cal had already ruined November basketball a long time ago, and now he had ruined March as well. Worst case now is that we go something like 21-10 in the regular season and bow out during the second weekend. I either want a top 3 seed and F4 run, or go 9-16 again and get the SOB out of here.

This Adam Gorney ad keeps popping up on the side and the guy looks exactly like Stevie Janowski.

Livingston is a modern day 4 in every way. Would love to see him try to drive on a 4-man.

If only every "4" could go 56/112 and 59/105 from 3P prior to their HS senior year. Maybe that is your definition of "modern"?

Cal is college basketball's version of Donald Trump - thin-skinned, petulant, vindictive, mocking, and prone to friendly-fire and inexplicable statements. Not a perfect metaphor, granted, but throwing Oscar under the bus for "not knowing the plays" is some Trumpian shit if I've ever heard it. Can you imagine Izzo or Few saying something like that about the reigning NPoY???

We have the #1 class coming in next season and I'm not even excited about it. I mean, it's better than not having the #1 class, but I have no doubt that they will underperform and flame-out in the tournament. I used to defend Cal against the accusations that "he just rolls the ball out and lets them play," but no more. Hell, he admitted as much last night.

Good news is we have a guy on our bench with a cute nickname and some totally funky, hip, fashionable glasses, and another failed former head coach who is going to totally revolutionize our offense.

Can we bring back "DJ PM Pretty Man" Joel Justus of the Justus Files?

If you find yourself in Leicester Square and the weather's cooperating, check out LSQ Rooftop for a drink or two. Incredible London view.
