Rudd, you might want to tell whoever made this that they forgot to feather the bottom of the hat when they put it on Anth's head and that harsh straight line is bugging the shit out of me. TIA.

I mean I asked the same question, pretzel, and got ridiculed for hating patriotism.

Does anyone listen to the national anthem or say the pledge when they’re by themselves?

My question is not meant to say anything about the wisdom/rightness of kneeling v. not, but white people losing their minds about kneeling definitely made me start questioning the tradition.

I drink Limoncello La Croix all day long. I actually am addicted to them in that it’s almost an unhealthy craving at this point. But I do not like the alcoholic seltzers at all. Would much rather have a light beer.

Wow. Pretzel wants to remove the national anthem. There’s cowardly kneeling and then there’s turning your back on America completely.

How dare you disrespect the flag and all those who died defending it? Love it or leave it you commie snowflake libshit.

Many people are saying you’d rather burn the flag rather than salute it. Liberal ignorance knows no bounds.

Grabs coke and some popcorn at the concession stand while it is playing, talks with someone beside me, plays on my phone, coughs loudly, laughs at someone’s joke, picks nose, smirks at how bad the singer is, thinks they should hurry up so we could get started.

Baseball fans in the late 19th century might’ve heard live military bands play the Star-Spangled Banner at a game every so often, but the song—which hadn’t yet been designated as the national anthem—wasn’t really a common occurrence at sporting events. That began to change on September 5, 1918, during Game 1 of the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs. It was an era when the Red Sox still had Babe Ruth, and the phrase “the last time the Cubs won the World Series” wasn’t yet a joke. In fact, the two teams had won six of the last 15 world championship titles.

The Anthem, in person, before a big game gives me chills & sometimes water eyes depending on the performance or setting. Certainly never been annoyed by it.

Weird take (thought) to have imo.
It's a powerful song in person before a big game, absolutely. I just find it odd it's treated like a "holy" song but played at every random athletic event in these United States.

I actually lol'd at "libshit," @_Chase_. I am stealing that word, hope that's cool.

What I do miss is a day of drinking several bottles of champagne with B$ before a big football game. And then deciding we should tone it down and switching to seltzers.

I am ok with lime Truly, but prefer White Claw Pure and add my own lime. The flavored ones are too sweet and fake tasting to me.

I still have a couple of cases in the basement fridge leftover from the 2019 football season and rush on seltzer hoarding since all the college hussies were buying them out at Kroger Euclid.

Maybe fall 2021 we can clear them out? 2022?

There really wasn’t a particular setting. I was beered out on Saturday night and grabbed one that someone had left in my basement fridge and found it to be much better than White Claw or Truly.

TO BE DETERMINED if I ever purchase a six pack or whatever but it was a nice changeup.

It’s played for people who understand US history.

So it stands to reason that it confounds you.

Just missing the setting and/or occasion for a Bud Light Seltzer, richie. Poolside before going home to fire up the grill and let the lassies run in the yard? Post paddle hour on an unseasonably warm Thursday evening? Genuinely curious here and thanks in advance.

Waiting 11 hours for a 9PM tip?

Also the High Noon Grapefruits are absolutely phenomenal. Not in January like a psychopath but in the summer I can down 10 of those. They have vodka in them and are stronger than seltzers.

Yep. Nooners are def the best for sure. More expensive, as a normal 4 pack not on sale is $11.99

STEAMING HOT POTENTIALLY TERRIBLE TAKE ALERT:

Why do we play the National Anthem at every athletic event? Why does every Little League, NCAA, NAIA, Upward, NFL, high school, etc etc. game need a hearty dose of Francis Scott Key before it can get underway?

Play it at international events, NBA Finals, the Super Bowl, World Series, "big deal events," sure. But for random dimly lit SEC West matchups tipping at 9 pm on Jefferson Pilot SEC Network, etc., why? Why play it?

And seltzer is disgusting.

I've asked this for a long time. I think I (poorly) wrote a column about it way back in my newspaper days. We don't play it before movies or concerts or any other form of entertainment. Why did this become a sports ritual? And a lot of people at the venues take the opportunity to go to the concession stand or restroom, so it's not exactly this pristine ritual that we make it out to be. I have nothing against it, and some moments like Marvin Gaye and Whitney Houston slaying it before big events are amazing memories, but it's just a weird thing to do when you think about it.

That said, I look forward to the next time Everett McCorvey leads 22,000 in the singing of TSSB the next time we have a full house at Rupp.

Why do we do a lot of things we do?

Sometimes it’s about formality and precedent.

Wodie touched on it earlier but a rocking National Anthem can really get you going. There’s been a few times I’ve heard Marlena Van Hoose sing it prior to a game in Rupp and holy cow the hair on my arms was standing when she finished and 22,000 plus applauded.

Ask yourself what would happen if we just stopped playing the anthem all together because some people don’t like it

Would they be happy then?
Would that settle things ?
oh it wouldn't change a thing, it's just a tradition I find odd. And as catlanta pointed out, it's not a particularly "old" tradition, really.

I'll readily cop to being a person who is not particularly enamored with tradition of any sort, which is a pretty minority view. what @ukalum01 pointed out is certainly a valid take.

We are not a particularly "old" country in the grand scheme of things either. Your mind isn't changing. Patriotism be damned because of someone's feelings. And those pesky white people. About sums it up.

Are you a f—ing vampire that’s been around since the Middle Ages?

The entire county is only 244 years old, professional sports have been played for 144 years and the anthem’s been played for over 100.

And thus ends my example of America’s oldest tradition, “mansplaining.”
