Greg Brown entertains G-league offer

If you love college basketball, Boycott the NBA and G league! Don’t support them in any way. They’ll get the message.

Yes, the NBA used to make billions. Could be coronavirus has a lasting impact on large gatherings. But, even though a few million really is petty cash to the NBA, if the d league doesn't garner the attention Silver hopes it will, could be they realize they already had a free farm system with the NBA. Who knows, at this point. So much is left to be determined.

used to....they made 8.7 billiion last year.

Huh? Jody Demling has gone home and in that thread you said he was done and that anyone that disagreed with you was an idiot. Are you really not capable of anything here besides telling people they are dumb and you are special? Because as it's played out, you are wrong about yourself, and others.

hes very very lucky.

I don’t believe it’s about that for the G-League; it seems to be more of an investment, than an attempt to profit.

I’m sure they believe they can train and development these young men better than any college or University. From that perspective it makes sense.

Bring in the best young talent with quality incentives; strictly focus on development and player progression; the output from this—theoretically—will be better players who are more prepared for the professional level. Thus, leading to a better product on the court, which in turn should increase League profits long term.

Thoughts anyone?
Good points but who is develop these kids and coach, quality of coaching must be good also.I get it I cant blame a young man for taking this route but are they really going to improve.

it will be interesting to see this play out the next couple of years. if you are a top 10-15 player there is little to no reason to consider the "hometown hero" card. if you are looking cash (or a job for a family member) there is really not point to considering a ok state, lsu, or washington for a year. just go get thee 6 figure deal thats on the table.

but there is still value in going to a duke, uk, or ku. it will be interesting to see how blue blood coaches balance recruiting these guys.
Duke and KU can pay more than the G League. In fact LSU with a strong ass offer can outbid the G league.

Besides, the return on investment is miles ahead. Zion is a better earner than Mike Trout. Easy.
Interesting thought... Let's say Zion is a better earner than Mike Trout. Why is that do you think? Was it because of his high school play? Perhaps to a degree. But I believe his real value now is more directly related to his play in college for one year. The TV coverage, the highlight footage of his spectacular dunks played over and over on ESPN Sports Center. Same with AD at UK. He came in as the number 1 player in the country by many polls. But would he have had the following and status he had if he did not play his year of college ball and won a championship?

Who is going to air the G-League games on TV? Who is going to be in the stands watching the games? Without the college experience will the Zion's and AD's of the world be as popular? Who knows? It could be a way for the NBA to get these players on the cheap since they won't have their fame and following and really no other options. Of course there is that pesky CBA.

I do understand that argument, and for the 1st year I can see your point. But Stephen Curry went to Davidson. The Greek Freak didn’t go to college. LeBron no college. Kobe no college, etc etc. those are 4 of the most famous and popular players of the last 10 years. So it seems it doesn’t really matter that much in the grand scheme of things.

Follow the money. Gullible kids will chase that dollar because of desperation. Some, a few, will make it to the NBA. A few will become ronin, moving from 1 town to the next every few years trying to catch on with the NBA for a season or 2, or go overseas for a career. The rest will play until their bodies breakdown, and they can't play any more. Then, that free education would come in handy, but they passed it up.

Teams like UK, Kansas, UNCheats, will be fine. We have generational draw. The mid-level teams will have to cut back on non-revenue sports to continue. A whole lot of kids are going to be hurt by this as acholarships are reduced. On the other hand, a lot of college degrees are worthless.

Darn... and I thought I was on to something! LOL

But I was actually referring to the first year though. Kobe and LeBron did come into the league with a splash, but they are exceptions. Steph went to Davidson but he also created quite a following while there, more so than he did as a high school player. The Greek Freak... well he does have the nickname of Freak soooo... ;)

I thought Kobe struggled his first year?

This G League stuff is gonna fail miserably and I cant wait to see it happen

Doubtful, all the NBA has to do is invest in the G league and college becomes irrelevant for the top 25 guys.

This is the future, kids don't want to go to college

I just don't see how this new d-league business model is sustainable. Minor leagues in baseball isn't shelling out this kind of money to prospects. The attendance and TV revenue isn't big enough.
That’s because there’s 7 bagillion baseball players and about 50 different levels of minor leagues. Exaggerating obviously, but you get the point.
And yes there are some first and second round baseball prospects getting multi-million dollar signing bonuses, even right out of high school.
Just a couple of years ago, the reds gave Hunter Greene a $7.2 million signing bonus right out of high school. They give elite prospects those kinds of deals to keep them from opting for college.

This would be the thing to do as i don't care for the NBA and hardly watch it anymore but you will not get people to do this as most people are all talk.

Zion was a mega star before Duke. If he had gone to the G League, they'd have aired his games and built his brand in the same way.

A few hundred thousand people watched his high school team play a Chino Hill through a Facebook stream. His only summer league game was in prime time and had A-listers in the crowd.

There's a market for these guys. The NBA knows that.

He was popular but if you are trying to tell me he had the following in high school that he did after his year of exposure at Duke then we will have to agree to disagree. The exposure he got at Duke expanded his popularity probably by a factor of 10 (opinion). And that is not something that playing in the G-League will be able to replicate, at least not for the foreseeable future.

You do realize tons have already declined offers right?
