Good Season ... Historically Bad Loss

One thing you left out was the cancelled 2020 NCAA tourney. UK was likely a 2 seed in that tourney before it got cancelled. Had UK had a nice run in the 2020 tourney, the 2021 and 2022 tourneys wouldn't sting as much.
People mention 2020 a lot, but can you think of a Final Four team that had its point guard quit on the team right before a conference tournament?

I can't either. That team probably gets bounced before the Final Four as a result of Hagans' drama. It's a hard truth, but it's probably closer to reality than the one Cal was trying to sell us about that team.

Over the last 4 weeks I've read everything from "We're at the lowest point since BCG" to "Program is as strong today as it was in 2012." When I lay emotion aside and just look at the facts, here's my assessment of the year, and where we are as a program.

It was a very good year that ended with a historically bad loss.
  • We were a #2 seed, and went into the last weekend with puncher's chance for a #1 seed. (That cannot be considered a bad year.)
  • This basketball season brought "Joy back to Mudville." Oscar brought joy to young and old alike. His smile, hustle, ability and spirit caused UK fans to rally around him and the rest of the team in an unprecedented way.
  • The Dec- Jan team was running on all cylinders. We beat teams inside and outside. Brooks was a zone buster around the ft line. We beat teams in the 60's or 90's.
  • We lost to a #15 seed when we (and many other pundits) had UK penciled into the Final 4.
  • This historically bad loss caused us to quickly forget a very good (and fun) season. (I'm the first to admit that Final 4's and championships are my true measuring stick for "Great" seasons.
  • This historically bad loss came on the heels of a historically bad season! (That's a bad combo!)

Where Are We As A Program?
  • Cal signed 3 recruits in the top 10 for this year's recruiting class, including the #1 recruit.
  • The #1 recruit joined at Christmas, did not play a game, and looks like he'll go to NBA w/o ever playing a game for U.K.
  • We still have 2 top 10 recruits coming in this year's class.
  • The consensus "Player of the Year" is returning back to U.K.
  • Many pundits have us listed as a top 5 team next year without Sharpe returning.

Why the Negativity?

Why is there so much negativity when Vegas and many others had us favored to make Final 4 last year, many are projecting a top 5 team next year, and we're bringing in top recruiting classes? Regardless of where we agree or disagree, I think most logical people admit this question is like looking at broken glass. The answers splinter out in opposite directions. Here are my thoughts. (Feel free to agree or disagree.)
  • Some people don't like the roster turnover each year. Yet, other people want players like Brooks to leave the program.
  • The Sharpe saga does not sit well with the majority of UK fans. (I'm not certain who to blame, but it is a BAD look!)
  • The historically bad loss following on the heels of a historically bad season was an emotional whipsaw for most fans. (It was for me!)
  • I'm diving into some dangerous water here. But ... taking a knee at last year's game against Fla is the root for many people's unhappiness. I hear all the basketball complaints from my circle, but almost everyone eventually circles back to "Cal and the team lost me when they knelt during the National Anthem."
  • Cal is easy to dislike! Everyone knows he's in constant spin-mode or sales-mode. When we're winning he's considered, "Swagging Cal." The combination of losing last year, social stands last year, and a historically bad tournament lost this year now has many fans calling him "CCC."

I think the basketball program is healthy, but Cal certainly needs to combine a good season with a good post-season. This would be a good year to win the conference, conference tournament, and make a Final 4 run in the NCAA. I'm not sure Cal and the basketball program have a healthy relationship with the fanbase. I think Cal's relationship is worse with the 55+ demographic. Some of this is out of his control. Some of it is in his control, and it begins with Cal convincing this demographic that he cares. I don't expect him to cater to the whims of UK fans. I do think a smart coach that wants to leave a lasting legacy should realize that how his own fans view him will shape much of his legacy.

How in the in the hell do you call this a really good season? Finished 3rd in the SEC. Lost in the SEC tournament to Tennessee. Lost in the 1st round to St. Peters. Yeah, OK!

Basically, 2/3rds of our seasons since probation ended were better seasons from a record/wins level. That's not the type of season that has much of any historical significance.

The reality is that the 2022 team will be looked back on with casual embarrassment, at best.

Nothing in my OP about “historically” good year. I do consider a #2 seed with a chance at 1 seed going into last weekend a good season.

But, my statement was “good season with HISTORICALLY bad loss.”

This is what a true message board smack down looks like. @HurtLocker83 methodically dismantled @kybassfan and in the process, proved to the rest of the board how ignorant “d-bass” truly is. Hopefully, this beatdown serves as the impetus for “d-bass” to take his act elsewhere. Could we ever be so lucky??????.
Nobody dismantled anything. He stared spewing irrelevant BS about why they were seeded badly. Fact remains they out performed their seed massively. Anywhere from 57 -60 spots. Then the hater goon squad realizes they just got punked and shows up for damage control. And they fail!! It was not the worse loss of our history. It was the lowest seed that beat us. A seed that out performed their seed by the most EVER. Now, only someone with zero coping skills or someone with a huge grudge against the cats is going to say that was our worse tournament losses. So which is it with you, Momma’s boy or U6 fan?

You got crushed, take the L.

Well, don't take the L, just look at your forehead in the mirror. Same result.

You might be surprised how little someone cares.
……says the guy who incessantly says he doesn’t care.
Hahaha.
As long as you take the L on the Oscar leaving prediction
I don’t know if he did or didn’t predict Oscar would leave, but who cares. It’s not disparaging someone to make a prediction about them. I thought he would leave too, but I’m thrilled he’s staying. Does that somehow give me an L?

He guaranteed it.

Poor baby nobody said they were happy. Just laughing at your weakness over a loss to a final 8 team. Common with Nancy boys. Reading helps. You’d know these things.
Hahaha see your expectations ARE low. You care about proving me wrong than going far in the tournament. Losing to a 15 seed is great because said 15 went to the Elite Eight? Jeez dude if you are serious that’s sad

Your expectations are zero.

It’s called rock bottom. Bringing in his family falsely is low
Yes. The haters were desperate to demonize the program. This worst tournament loss lie was their lynchpin. It’s clear loss of that claim floored them and now they are attacking family, making sexual references against posters. It’s pathetic.

You main losing to the most unseeded team in the tournament in history. You are leaving claw marks trying to cling to your lie.

Good take man. It's unfortunate there are babies here who won't look at it for what it is. Thanks for throwing that together.

bahaha a momma joke? That's all you got ole chicken head (LCC)? You have over 800 posts in 2 months and you want to talk obsession? LOL ok ole chicken head.
The best you can come up with is "chicken head?" That doesn't even make sense, but then again with a mental maturity of under six I'm not surprised. Did you think that one up all by yourself? You should be proud, you managed to make a 3rd grade level joke on the internet. You certainly aren't here to talk basketball, troll. Do you have anything in your repertoire other than stalking and guffawing at your own stupidity? Just another pathetic one trick pony.

Only here to comment on title of the thread, but think it's a well put argument. They had a good bounce back season that was trending right but as we had some discussion throughout the year, the fear was if you flame out early in NCAA's it will be all for nothing-which unfortunately happened.

My hopes are the staff has seen the why and sounds like one issue was identified. You watch that last game and see a guy who was positive contributor sit entire rest of game for a guy who wasn't--it's noticeable that guy isn't being reported as returning. Good. One issue has been addressed. CJ Fredrick is at least the equal to Grady shooting the ball and one thing I do know about him is he's shot/played in hostile road environments in a Major Conference and performed. To me he's an upgrade over Grady--despite the 2000 pts for midpack Davidson teams. I've never cared for Davion Mintz's game so think anyone playing in his minutes is an upgrade. I think the team is 1/2 pieces (1 if you assume Reeves will eventually commit) away from being a really high level team with a chance to contend in a year that Cal really needs to win big. There's time to get that missing piece be it Portal or Guy who exits Draft and enters Portal.

I've completely written off Sharpe and Leonard Miller. I hope Sharpe goes #1 overall so Count Dracula MF'er Silver has to mention Kentucky as he's seen his program (Silver is a Dookie) depleted in a Calipari like manner this offseason and program can have their 4th #1 overall pick in 12 yrs. While I get why many don't care and I am not trying to sell you--I think it would be a bigger selling point to aid the "we're on right track and close to being what we were" angle. I also believe if TyTy Washington is healthy he may be first benefit of seeing the Murray's, Herro's, Maxey's get underdrafted and go higher than most expect--maybe even top 10.

That would help the program with some positive momentum going into this Bahamas Trip and depending on how they close this roster out....they have a team who gets some competitive games in August...has college star power in Oscar headlining and a nice roster of guys who can play--with 1 to 2 missing pieces...you have set up to have season finish differently this year, which we all agree is necessity for Calipari. Which leads to recruiting this Summer/Fall-he needs to have a top 2 class lined up by early Signing Period or that's going to hint at how things have gone. This is Kentucky's biggest recruiting season in Cal's tenure. Reed Sheppard being locked up is a big notch...now how it goes from here decides things and several excellent options, but you can't lose out on the high end guys.

What's done is done. I don't care for it either. But you dig in and fight or you fold and quit. He's got one last shot here to dig in and fight and we all will be seeing how it goes.

You got a point. Cry Chicken is better. It captures your zero coping skills and spineless ability to deal with college basketball. Cry child chicken. CCC. Oh!!! It fits!!!

Poor ole chicken head (LCC) adds nothing of value to the conversation other than constantly berating the other fans and team/coach. What a sad, sad miserable existence. I feel for your family for having to put up with you.
