Good Season ... Historically Bad Loss

You know how I know you and Ed are the same person? Because you replied to the same comment of mine with the same insult.
Well, that’d make you wrong AGAN. Like usual. Some dumbass statements just have obvious answers. That describes most of your comments.

Never lie to the person that knows the truth. You just did a twofer. Now both Ed (whoever that is, I literally know no one named Ed) and I just got reconfirmed exactly what you are.

I don't agree with the OP. If we were Auburn or Tenn sure it was a good season. WE ARE KENTUCKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We came in 3rd in the SEC, did not make the finals of the SEC tournament (nor win either) and then lost in the first round of the NCAA. How is any of that a good season for a program like Kentucky? Have we fallen that far in fans expectations?
Couldn’t have said it better 100% agree!

Why be so hateful?
Why do you keep asking me that ? Triple S is a cancer to this board. He’s a jerk. I get along great with most people. I never get angry … and then you and Triple S just continue to say stupid things that make this board worse than it already is. Cal screwed up UK basketball and a lot of us are really unhappy. Not hard to understand. Have an awesome day !

Oh no, do you not like me anymore? *gasp*
*gets on knees* PLEASE OH PLEASE FORGIVE ME😂

Only if one is stupid enough to obsess over that one aspect of that team. Now, I can understand why you are fixated on it, but they were, in fact, a final 8 team. They were beaten by a team in the championship. They were under seeded by 53 or more positions. All of these are absolute and undeniable facts. Only because it doesn't fit the hater agenda are these facts ignored.

The type person that would ignore these undisputed facts would obsess over a 19 yr old. and a crooked mentor. Again, I understand why you are doing it. What I would point out is that there is a substantial sum of money on the table. !0 million give or take, perhaps. Are you going to sit there with a straight face and tell me you'd put that at risk as a 19 yr old if you had an adult you trusted tell you not to?

Now, I understand the indulgence in weak minded drama over all this. The haters really couldn't help themselves. That said, nobody that isn't into self indulgent drama is going to give this any credibility. Have fun in your drama laced pity mob but don't expect anyone with any actual responsibility to do any more than snicker behind your back.
So this is the post that brings me out of "Forum Board" retirement. I just could not lay off of this one. I hope everyone is paying attention and will see this post and go look for yourself. Mr. Bassfan states that St Peters was 56 spots under seeded (or whatever number, I saw one thread where he said 61 spots). Is there any basketball fan anywhere that would believe that garbage. That statement is the most out there thing I have truly ever heard. He must have read that somewhere on some hacks podcast or something. I truly never thought even his infintile-ego-maniac brain would come up with that one. The question I have for every one is the following: 1) Which of the 11 losses for St Peters was the good one that made them so underseeded ?? Quick answer there, there wasnt one. Somebody find me a good loss that would say "hey, they have some real talent and almost pulled the upset of that powerhouse team they played in the regular season".
2) Which win or wins was it that were so good during the year that were, according to Mr Bassfan, so grossly ignored in the seeding process ?? Good answer again, NONE. They had the chance to beat ole Ricky P's team several times and could not. But then, according to Mr Bassfan, Ricky P is a piece of garbage and sucks at coaching. So why would beating his team do any good, even if they had the team to do so.

Was it the double digit loss to Providence. Or the 21 pt loss to St Johns (dont even ask about their record). Maybe it was the loss to St Francis of Brooklyn that was overlooked. But, they did beat Nyack and Quinnipiac. WOW. Hey, but they beat Fairfield twice in one week later in the year. That must have been one helluva celebration week. Like Christmas all week. YAY.

Bottom line, they were not even close to being Under Seeded by ANY number that Bass wants to come up with. They just Over Performed for a few weeks. Like lightning in a bottle. And the Big Blue was the victim to fuel the E8 run. You don't lose 11 games to the likes of St Francis of Brooklyn and stand around like you are an Elite 8 team before that tourney started. And Mr Bassfan went so far as to call them absolute and undeniable facts that St Peter's was that good and seeded improperly.

And on a side note, he also stated this recently:
Now, Mr Bassfan likes to call anyone out who "craps" on the players, coaches or program all the time. Wonder who he was crapping on here as a dumbass 3 jacking offense. Was it the coach who came up with that offense or was it the players who just decided to jack away. Either way, he is crapping on somebody here at UK. Tsk, Tsk, Tsk Mr Bassfan, cant trust you with all of your double standards. He is such the big bad guy. All horn, no driveshaft. What is he gonna do when he gets really mad, hit me with his PURSE.

  1. Not if we don’t waste time with dumbass 3 jacking offenses.

Find somewhere where I’ve been nasty to someone. And I would love the mods to post who has multiple accounts.
Well, for one thing you continue to lie and accuse me of saying Oscar was gone even though you cannot and will not provide proof for such a false accusation.

That's just the obvious one.

You are rationallizing the NCAA’s screw up. I am looking at hard evidence they screwed up. They were under seeded by 52 spots or more based on actuals, not conjecture. In fact it was the worst case in history

Cal rarely uses a pt 3 jack green PlayStation offense. It’s the hating zealots on this board that despise KY that do that.

Sorry, you should have stayed in retirement.

Over the last 4 weeks I've read everything from "We're at the lowest point since BCG" to "Program is as strong today as it was in 2012." When I lay emotion aside and just look at the facts, here's my assessment of the year, and where we are as a program.

It was a very good year that ended with a historically bad loss.
  • We were a #2 seed, and went into the last weekend with puncher's chance for a #1 seed. (That cannot be considered a bad year.)
  • This basketball season brought "Joy back to Mudville." Oscar brought joy to young and old alike. His smile, hustle, ability and spirit caused UK fans to rally around him and the rest of the team in an unprecedented way.
  • The Dec- Jan team was running on all cylinders. We beat teams inside and outside. Brooks was a zone buster around the ft line. We beat teams in the 60's or 90's.
  • We lost to a #15 seed when we (and many other pundits) had UK penciled into the Final 4.
  • This historically bad loss caused us to quickly forget a very good (and fun) season. (I'm the first to admit that Final 4's and championships are my true measuring stick for "Great" seasons.
  • This historically bad loss came on the heels of a historically bad season! (That's a bad combo!)

Where Are We As A Program?
  • Cal signed 3 recruits in the top 10 for this year's recruiting class, including the #1 recruit.
  • The #1 recruit joined at Christmas, did not play a game, and looks like he'll go to NBA w/o ever playing a game for U.K.
  • We still have 2 top 10 recruits coming in this year's class.
  • The consensus "Player of the Year" is returning back to U.K.
  • Many pundits have us listed as a top 5 team next year without Sharpe returning.

Why the Negativity?

Why is there so much negativity when Vegas and many others had us favored to make Final 4 last year, many are projecting a top 5 team next year, and we're bringing in top recruiting classes? Regardless of where we agree or disagree, I think most logical people admit this question is like looking at broken glass. The answers splinter out in opposite directions. Here are my thoughts. (Feel free to agree or disagree.)
  • Some people don't like the roster turnover each year. Yet, other people want players like Brooks to leave the program.
  • The Sharpe saga does not sit well with the majority of UK fans. (I'm not certain who to blame, but it is a BAD look!)
  • The historically bad loss following on the heels of a historically bad season was an emotional whipsaw for most fans. (It was for me!)
  • I'm diving into some dangerous water here. But ... taking a knee at last year's game against Fla is the root for many people's unhappiness. I hear all the basketball complaints from my circle, but almost everyone eventually circles back to "Cal and the team lost me when they knelt during the National Anthem."
  • Cal is easy to dislike! Everyone knows he's in constant spin-mode or sales-mode. When we're winning he's considered, "Swagging Cal." The combination of losing last year, social stands last year, and a historically bad tournament lost this year now has many fans calling him "CCC."

I think the basketball program is healthy, but Cal certainly needs to combine a good season with a good post-season. This would be a good year to win the conference, conference tournament, and make a Final 4 run in the NCAA. I'm not sure Cal and the basketball program have a healthy relationship with the fanbase. I think Cal's relationship is worse with the 55+ demographic. Some of this is out of his control. Some of it is in his control, and it begins with Cal convincing this demographic that he cares. I don't expect him to cater to the whims of UK fans. I do think a smart coach that wants to leave a lasting legacy should realize that how his own fans view him will shape much of his legacy.
Damn man. You nailed it. It’s like you were living in my head because I agree with every word. Whether you’re part of the cal crew or the legion of doom I don’t see how anyone can disagree with any of this (oh but they will). It’s just a combination of facts and unbiased rationale. Good post. You’ll get killed for it regardless so brace yourself.

9-16 followed up with a boat load of cupcakes on our home schedule ending in a first round loss loss to a 15 seed. ‘Nuff said.

The facts are we were one of the best teams in the Country until our whole back court became injured. My biggest critique toward Cal is we didn't have enough depth at guard. Then you have to remember CJ Fredrick so we would've had that extra guard and winner of the 3 point contest at madness. I also supposed he could've played Dontaie more. Although, Cal did give Dontaie plenty of Pt early on and he failed to produce against the crap teams we play at home early on.

It really seems to me like we just ran into a freakish bit of bad luck. We've got Oscar, Toppin and Collins back along with 2 top 10 freshman and we're gonna add some transfers. It's all good. I'm ready to enjoy summer.

I believe you know enough about college basketball to know you selectively skipped over a bunch of good wins. I agree 110% that November schedule left me yawning, but beating 2 teams in the Final 4 (I mean ... really thumping them like a drum) are not my idea of cupcakes. The beatdown we put on UT caused Barnes and his crew to do some soul-searching.

I'm amazed at the # of fans who form opinions and then throw out the facts that do not align with preconceived opinion. The "Swaggy Cal" crowd ignores the historically bad loss one year after a historically bad season. They ignore that someone in Sharpe's camp sold Cal on some 'fool's gold' causing the #1 recruit to not play 1 second in a season when our backcourt was held together by duct tape in Feb & March. On the other side, the "Can't Coach Cal" crowd ignore that Cal put together a team this year that was demolishing upper echelon teams in January by every possible way. They ignore a top recruiting class combining with the returning National Player of the Year plus other key returning players causing us to be preseason top 5.

Facts are our friend and should be the foundation of evaluation instead of emotions causing people to ignore the facts that do not support their position.

Interesting post. Good read.

For the facts are friend...I agree. Which is why I'm very interested to see how this team responds. Most teams who respond from failing had some goals they achieved. For instance every UK media outlet loved to reference what Tyler Hansbrough did at UNC when he returned after winning NPOY in '08. What they omit, is Hansbrough was on UNC teams that were in Elite 8 in '07 and went to the Final Four in '08. They won ACC Championships. That matters. Believe they were 101-14 from '07-'09. This program has lost 24 games in the past 2 yrs with a 1-3 Postseason record. I saw positive steps, but then limited by blind loyalty and horrible regression. Under Cal, TALENT is what matters. You need that and he needs to get a better roster who can play how he prefers to play because he will revert. So that means Cason Wallace is a better suited PG for how he will play and how his best teams have succeeded. If we're talking factually. The sport is changing so maybe you don't need to be as talented as past UK teams, but it's lacking 2 difference makers and I know Reeves will finally go public one day after the media has had a commitment watch for 2 1/2 weeks.

Guess the biggest elixir I want to see from '23 Kentucky. Win. Win big games. Win SEC Championships. Play better later in the season than at beginning, and when you have players playing well, they need to be on the floor over guys who aren't.

Agree 100%. I like Wheeler’s speed and thought it was difference maker in some big wins. But ... Cal has always depended on guards who can get their own bucket at crunch time, and Wheeler is not that guy. Cal has his inside presence in Oscar. Someone will need to be able to create their own basket for end of shot clock/end of game scenarios. I think 3 point will be fine, but need Fredrick to stay healthy.

I agree that Cal needs to win as much hardware as he can win this year. Boat is taking on water. Winning cures a lot of problems.

“ See that wall over there, we only hang banners there. Nothing else”

John Calipari

In short, this is Kentucky. We expect to win championships. The last few years, Cal has not even been close to even have the opportunity to accomplish that goal. When you make excuses for losing instead of seeing WHY we lost, you’re in denial. Those are the FACTS.

Hopefully, this beatdown serves as the impetus for “d-bass” to take his act elsewhere. Could we ever be so lucky??????.

One thing you left out was the cancelled 2020 NCAA tourney. UK was likely a 2 seed in that tourney before it got cancelled. Had UK had a nice run in the 2020 tourney, the 2021 and 2022 tourneys wouldn't sting as much.
