The current culture in the program is a real concern and I think it is legit to ask Stoops how much his attempt to leave last year played a roll in that culture shift. Is is a coincidence that he flirted with A&M and so many players are bolting this year? Did his A&M tryst impact our season? There are many factors. Some people who have coached with him say he was way too comfortable at UK. That should not be the case now.

Some people who have coached with him say he was way too comfortable at UK. That should not be the case now.

Well stated and covers some of the concerns I have/had. The culture seems obviously to be off, kind of confirmed by some past players opinions. The too comfortable comment also makes sense, you have a position group make the same errors for multiple seasons now and it makes you wonder why Stoops isn't addressing the problem. Elliot, Brumbaugh, those guys wren't getting it done, even though they were friends, Stoops stilled moved on. Recently, maybe not as much.

To win 7 games in 1969 you had to go 7-3 or better. And then you got an 11th game in the 70’s to get 7 so you could go 7-4. Teams rarely could get into bowls at 7-4 to get a 12th game until bowl expansion in the last half of the 90’s. Then in 05 we went to this era where you get 12, schedule 3 eastern michigans, and get a 13th game to get 7 wins. If you want to talk about stoops win totals or whatever fine, and his best accomplishment would be his SEC record in that stretch where he went 4-4 2 seasons and went 5-3 in 2018. But you can only really go back 20 years or stretch it some to 30 years to for it to be legit comparisons.

Stoops has done good things here. But the group that likes to justify where things are going with saying ‘bowl games…’ or ‘7 wins…’ aren’t having legit conversations. If stoops had coached in the 80’s he would’ve only had one bowl team, 2018. 2021 might’ve snuck in one but a back end top 20 team wasn’t a shoe in bowl participant historically. They didn’t even move to start ranking 25 instead of 20 teams until the 90’s. Likewise, give those older teams 3 mac games, 12 season games and we get to .500 and a bowl at or over half of the 60 seasons before stoops got here. Stoops has finished with a .500 or above record in 7 of his 12 seasons. So it is a slightly better clip than historically but it isn’t knocking it out better especially considering the resources he has, schedule advantages, etc.

now that the East schedule we had under stoops is gone we’re about to see whether or not he can step up. some people act like it’s the toughest schedule anybody has ever seen and how could lowly UK expect to win against that schedule and NIL and yada yada. But it was just short of being as tough as the 2007 schedule we went 8-5 against.

That doesn't really tell the story. From 1974 until 1987, we played 11 games and only 6 SEC games. So we controlled 5 of the 11 games we played. In general it wasn't an overly difficult non-conference schedule and we still struggled to win more games than we lost. Even 1966 and before, we played 10 games and 6 SEC games and struggled to have a winning record. Through most years we have a played a higher percentage of non-conference games than we do today and weren't good enough to beat anyone. Any way you want to look at it, Stoops has been better than any coach we have had aside from Bear. The bottom line is we were a bottom feeding program and we haven't been under Stoops. The idea that our expectations should be that the program should consistently win 8 - 10 games a year does not recognize where we came from and what we have been as a program. I hope I'm wrong, but it's unlikely that in a modern era of NIL we will rise any further that we have been under Stoops. Without some changes to pay for play laws, we are nothing but a small market team.

Freshman wide receiver Hardley Gilmore, who entered the transfer portal over the weekend and reportedly will transfer to Nebraska, was charged on Dec. 7 with misdemeanor assault after allegedly punching someone in the face at a storage unit in downtown Lexington.

That was his first legal strike, but not his first with the Kentucky coaching staff. He was billed as a player to build around, and that’s the kind of behavior that builds a road to Pooptown.

NIL in basketball is about 13 guys. Maybe 15.

NIL in football is about 6 times as much.

I read that KSR column. No sources were cited for any problems beyond the misdemeanor. It was also reported that Gilmore was being courted back by the staff. Not sure if that was true or not. Shorts was on that staff. So, if Key and Gilmore were problems, why would he want them at Nebraska.

I think it’s safe to say Gilmore wasn’t a model student athlete or an appreciated teammate.

Every player is a hero when they're here, villain when they leave. Whatever the situations with these guys are they wanted gone. Leaves a sour taste in the mouth....but that's kind of college football these days.
